Common Core Standard or Wyoming State Standard: (Choose one standard to focus this
lesson on)
2-LS4-1- Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity LS4.D: Biodiversity and Humans
● There are many different kinds of living things in any area, and they exist
in different places on land and in water.

Learning Target (For the student's benefit, explain what students will be able to do by the
end of the lesson):
I can make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different
habitats.

Anticipatory Set (First activity to excite and focus students on the lesson for the day):
Do you like animals? How many kinds of animals are there? Have you ever wanted
to be a scientist that studies animals? Today you get your chance at looking at a
bunch of different animals and what makes them similar or different from one
another. In this lesson, your parent/ guardian is going to be helping you so have
them print out the 2 following worksheets/cutouts:
https://mysteryscience.com/docs/180
https://mysteryscience.com/docs/253
(You may need to create a free account to do this.)

Model (How will the teacher demonstrate the skill or competence): After you and your
mom or dad have helped you print what you need. You will cut on all of the dotted
lines until everythings cut in rectangles. You will also need about 4 sheets of regular
blank printer paper so get that out and ready to go. Now you will watch the video
and begin doing the lesson and activity.

Guided Practice (List activities which will be used to guide student practice and include a
time frame for completing this practice.):

Here is the link for the lesson and video you will be completing today! You should
not have to sign in at all to view this.:)

Independent Practice (How will students be applying this knowledge or practicing this skill
independently):
Divide the animals into groups of 1. Does not have bones 2. Give birth (mammals) 3.
Birds 4. Animals not in any of the last 3 groups 5. Reptiles. Complete this once
before watching the video and once after watching the video lesson. Have a parent
help you submit a picture of each of your attempts to our Classroom on Google.

Check for Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have

learned the objectives.):
Submit a picture of your final animal categories after completing the entire video
lesson. Also show the circled answers to your challenge cards.

Closure (What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson?):
Please make sure to submit those pictures of the different categories as they will
be graded! Also, PARENTS if this entire activity took less than an hour and you feel
that your child understands it well then please try the 2 activity extensions found
on this sheet https://mysteryscience.com/biodiversity/mystery-1/biodiversity-
classification/174?code=MTk3NTI5Njkz&t=student&chapter=all#slide-id-3963 .
Differentiation
High: Explained in “closure category”
Low: May need extra guidance throughout this entire lesson. Help keep your child
on task and focused while they are watching the videos, cutting the worksheets or
organizing their animals. Review with them a couple times what animals go in to
what categories before submitting their second “final” picture of the categories. (no
bones, mammals, birds, animals not in any group and reptiles.)
Special Needs: (High Functioning Autism) Same as low differentiation category
