Preface
Collins English Grammar and Composition is a carefully graded series spanning eight levels, which aims to enable learners
to master the rules of the English language. Recent developments in cognitive psychology suggest that effective learning
depends on a relaxed learning atmosphere, a combination of discovery learning and direct instruction, and a variety of
tasks to suit the major learning styles. This series takes these insights into account to facilitate effective intervention in
the teaching-learning of English grammar at the word, sentence and discourse levels.
The Teacher’s Manual accompanying the series has been created to equip teachers to deliver grammar lessons
effectively. The secret to good teaching is simple: understanding the aims and objectives of all classroom transactions –
from roll call to instruction and evaluation.
How to teach grammar using the series
The objective of teaching grammar is to enable learners to read, write and speak in correct English. The rules in
grammar are meant as an aid for achieving this purpose. It is advisable to use a combination of the inductive and
the deductive approach for teaching grammar using the Collins English Grammar and Composition series.
The inductive approach, especially useful in the lower classes, helps learners figure out the rules while teaching correct
usage. Every grammar rule in the book is accompanied by multiple examples. Teachers should use the examples to
illustrate the rules. To foster the interest of learners in grammar, it is necessary to place it in the context of familiar
scenarios. This can be done by using examples from real life. For primary classes, use objects and images as much
as possible to teach learners. In these classes, the focus should be on instilling a habit of correct usage rather than
teaching grammar rules. Teaching aids like picture cards and stick puppets may also be used to teach topics like
nouns, verbs, adjectives and articles.
The deductive approach, or rule-driven learning, on the other hand, presents a rule and follows it up with examples
explaining its application. It is useful for learners with an analytical learning style. While teaching middle school
learners, for instance, teachers may write the example on the blackboard and use simple grammar diagrams to explain
the rule using the example sentence. Look at these examples.
1. subject verb direct object
Ronnie kicked the ball.
2. subject verb indirect object direct object
Ronnie gave Sunny the ball.
A common pitfall for learners across all age groups is tenses. An easy way of teaching tenses is using a timeline. Create
a timeline for students on the blackboard mentioning important events in their lives, like birth, joining school, taking
a vacation or doing something for the first time. Then, help them to make sentences based on the events using the
various forms of the present, past and future tense. Point out the way the verb changes in the different tenses. Look at
this sample timeline.

Another problem faced by learners in countries where English is not the first language is that of mother tongue
influence. Sometimes, learners tend to transliterate a turn of phrase, resulting in incorrect English being spoken or
written. Teachers can refer to the ‘Watch Out!’ section in the book, which includes several such common mistakes
which students should be careful about, with examples illustrating both correct and incorrect usage.
Teachers should also encourage learners to pay attention to the ‘Grammar Bytes’ section, which includes important
additional points with examples. The ‘Don’t Forget!’ section should be used as a ready reckoner to glance through the
important points after the lesson has been completed.
Additional worksheets
Like mathematics, a key aspect to mastering grammar is repetition and reinforcement. In addition to the plentiful
practice provided in the books, the Teacher’s Manuals include additional worksheets for every topic. These help to
reinforce the concept taught and can be used for setting classwork or homework, or for assessments.
Answer keys
The Teacher’s Manuals include the answer keys to the exercises in the book, as well as the answers to the additional
worksheets. Wherever possible, the answers have been given as complete sentences to facilitate easy checking of
the answers.
We hope teachers would find these resources useful for providing practice to learners as well as for examining their
level of achievement at the end of the course.
