Traughber                                             (Making a short story)
Overall Goal of Lesson: To have students develop their writing skills and story structure in a fun activity that will allow
them to use their creativity as much as they like.

Instructional Objectives: By the end of this class, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate their distinguished characteristic of fictional writing.
2. Will be able to show their versatility as a writer:
a. By using figurative language.
b. Showing that they understand how to use a full circle ending.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS: Key Vocabulary: Figurative language, full circle ending,
110.36 c (9-12) 110.39 c (9-12) 110.52 c (9-12) first person point of view, word choice, sentence structure,
tone, and theme.
Higher Order Questions: What is your theme? What is your plot? Did you use first person point of view? Was there
conflict? Is there use of figurative language? What is the tone?

Student Activities: This is an independent activity that will allow for students to improve on their writing skills.

Modifications/ELL Strategies: For special Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Come up with a plot for your
needs children, it would be a good idea to help short story that will be approved by me before you begin writing.

Time Teacher Input/Lesson Activity: Students will be given computers in order to use google docs for
their stories. Once students have an approved plot, they will begin independently writing a rough draft.
The story is required to have at least 3 paragraphs with 3 sentences or more in each. They will use first
person point of view, have 2 uses of figurative language, and a full circle ending.

Modeling: I will model this activity by presenting my own short story as an example.

Guided Practice: I will present select parts of my short story and will demonstrate which part is using
figurative language and how my full circle ending comes into play.

Independent Practice: Each student will be allowed to use google docs to start the draft of their
stories.

Lesson Closure: Student’s will share with me their works and I will grade based on the criteria that I
have set for them. I will not focus on grammar mistakes since it is a rough draft and will rather focus
on how they were able to create their story with the requirements I gave them.
5min Assessment Methods/Strategies: I will be able to see if students gave their all in their assignment and
how they understand the use of figurative language, point of view, and full circle endings.

Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.): This assignment will include the following equipment:
-Internet
-Computer
-Printer(Optional in case a student wants to share their work with me this way.)
-Paper(Optional in case a student prefer writing on paper.)                    
 
Reflection: This is a good way for students to be able to really give their all in a story that they have control over. For
those who really enjoy writing, this will be a welcome assignment that they will find to be very entertaining. It will also
be a good way for students to use more figurative language or a different type of ending for their stories. This way they
can have diverse writing abilities.
