Watch the Documentary video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxqgm-ruiW8) about Philippine
Seas by Atom Araullo. After which answer the following questions briefly:

1. What is the status of our seas nowadays?

From the video that I’ve watched, there were different oceans that were featured. The Tanon strait in
Visayas, Manjuyod in Negros Oriental, Moalboal in Cebu, ocean in general santos, Kiamba in Sarangani,
Islands of palawan, Manila bay and the new discovered Philippine Rise in the province of Aurora. I could
barely say that some seas are still in good conditions were we can find beautiful coral reefs and a
humongous number of sea creatures. But on the other hand, there were also seas that were devastated
and no longer produces fishes due to destroyed coral reefs because of irresponsible human acts.

2. How do marine animals and people interact with each other?

There were marine animals who were extinct or endangered, and some officials prohibits the encounter of
humans to such creatures, this is what we called the lady sea of “dugong” in a local version. As what I’ve
saw in the video, this kind of specie were shy, and you’re a lucky one if this one shows up when you’re
diving just to see them. While on the other side, dolphins are much different with this one. They’re fun and
used to see people, but human can’t touch them. Hence, you can have selfies with them as they follow the
sound of the boat and come near you. If you are a diver, you can swim in a deep blue sea where you can
encounter turtles, they’re a slow mover and will look at you reluctantly. And also there were some areas in
the sea were you can find groups of sardine’s fishes. They group their selves to protect one another. There
were tons of sea creatures that can be found in the ocean. But we need to have an extra care as we

encounter one of them. We should be responsible enough not to hurt them. Always remember that they’re
an innocent creature and like humans, we must protect one another.

3. What should we do to protect our marine biodiversity?

As a human, it’s our duty to protect our marine ecosystem. There are variety or kinds of ecosystem
in our country. In fact, Philippines is the center of the center of marine biodiversity in the world,
where we can here the most diverse marine species in our planet. Ocean is one of the important
place on earth for us people. Because we get a lot of benefits in their, we can have a food to eat.
We can go to tourists marine destination where we can relax and most especially there will be a
place where we can be proud of. We need to be more cautious and responsible on our acts, by
simple refraining from throwing garbage into sea waters we can avoid an accidental death of a fish.
As a fisherman, they should avoid the use of dynamite or cyanide to catch fishes to prevent the
devastation of coral reefs under the sea. If corals were destroyed where will the fishes go? Where
are they going to live. I do believe that in all points of life, we should always choose to respect and
be responsible.

4. What did you feel upon watching the documentary?

After watching the movie, I’ve got mixed emotions. An emotion of happiness, excitement, but on the other
hand it also saddened me in some part. I’ve seen how large Philippine sea were. There were lots of tourist
destinations, with different kind of fishes and colorful coral reefs. I was happy to see how the dolphins
interact with people that’s why I imagined my self to be as Atom Aurallo during the documentation. I
enjoyed watching how tunas were caught in General Santos City and serves as one of their livelihood and
make their market profit up to 6BILLION per year. Unfortunately, there were fishermen in Sarangani who
may be unlucky if they can’t catch tuna for a certain day. Fishermen says that it can take up to 4 days until
they catch tuna in the sea. It’s because of the high demand of tuna in the marketplace that’s why tunas are
decreasing in some parts of the sea. I was also devastated upon watching that there were some fisherman
who accidentally crossed the sea border of Indonesia to catch tuna but unfortunately got jailed. Some
fishermen were jailed up to 1 year or more. Hence, there were also foreign people who were continuously
makes crimes or illegal moves to our country specifically in the islands of Palawan were many sea
creatures are still present. This illegal acts were poaching the shell of turtles and cutting the pin of the
sharks and return them to the sea after the crime. It was being export to some part of China as shark’s pins
were served as a soup in some restaurant. Foreign can bail easily because the bail fee is not much high.
There must be a stronger law against this illegal acts; our government should take action. I also know how
beautiful Philippines is, there are lot of tourist destination like in Palawan where we can swim with fishes

and turtles but I hated the though that some people are irresponsible, they kept on throwing thrashes on the
sea, therefore it causes bad effects on sea creature. Some dies out of it. I was also surprised to know that
there is a discovered benham back or Philippine rise where can be able to feed to whole country. It can be
found in Aurora, because of it’s beauty and not destructed coral reefs it said to be that the are is a breeding
area for big fishes. And no person shall get in this area to preserve its beauty. We must protect our marine
diversity, because the one who benefit from it is us, the people. We should take responsibility of everything
we do. No dynamites, no cyanides, and no throwing of trashes. Let us help one another and make the
world a better place for living.
