Concerns on the use of polythene

Use of polythene is increasing day by day and now it can be seen that polythene is being used in
almost every activity of life. It has been estimated that India's polythene demand is expected to
increase by 129 % by 2023.In Bangladesh day by day increase polythene use and it is increase
50% last 20 years. With the increased use of polythene, the pollution level caused by it will also
be increased, affecting almost every kind of environment including terrestrial as well as aquatic
biome

Thousands of plastic factories are producing tons of plastic bags which are very popularly used
by the people for shopping purposes because of its ease, cheapness and convenience of use but
their very hazardous negative impact is never highlighted or, at the very least, openly discussed
in a more serious tone. The situation is worsened in Yemen as economically disadvantaged
country. Many countries have banned plastic bags due to public concern over the serious
negative impact on the environment and agriculture, especially, in agricultural countries, such as
Yemen, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa, etc.

Every year, nearly 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into the oceans and with that status quo it
has been estimated that, there will be more plastic than fish by 2050. It is worthy to mention that
in 2002 Bangladesh became the first country in the world to ban thinner plastic bags. However,
after 18 years, it appears that the ban is not truly come into force. In Bangladesh the excessive use
of polythene bags leads to numerous problems especially in the city area. The non-biodegradable
characteristics of plastic bags leave its devastating effect on the soil and water. The polymers
form a layer on the surface of water and soil. As a result, the farming land becomes barren and
crops yield from it are found to be contaminated.

There should be strict rules and regulation for limiting the use of polythene to a certain
amount. Awareness camps should be organized in every corner of the city especially in slum
areas to aware people on restricting use of polythene and to use biodegradable polythene
only. More and more microbes which can degrade polythene should be screened so as to
know exact mechanism of degradation and to know the gene responsible for it. And also
government should take step for use of polythene .
