Dear Recruiting Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Graduate Health and Safety – Nuclear and Marine role, which I
found on Gradcracker. I am currently pursuing a Chemical Engineering degree at Sheffield
Hallam University with an expected completion date of mid-June. I believe that my analytical
and logical thinking, punctuality and team player attitude will allow me to successful in this
role.

Babcock being a world leading company involved in many different sectors such as Energy,
Nuclear and Aerospace is a diverse and ideal place to work for new graduates. This is
because, they provide a world class graduate experience especially with the new partnership
with “The Smarty Train” which involve science, technology and creativity to make an even
better graduate experience which involves learning and progressing every day. This is why I
am interested in the graduate scheme as Babcock focuses on career development and not to
mention the plenty exciting opportunities and projects Babcock run which will enable me to
grow both as an Engineer and as a person.

Environment and Safety is a module that I am currently taking in my third year of Chemical
Engineering. Here, different incident investigation techniques are discussed, health and safety
techniques such as HAZOP, FMECA and ALARP are explored as well as learning about the
risk practice at work. Specifically, I learnt about wastewater management, the plants, the way
they work, the products, raw materials as well as the economics and the management side of
the plant. Furthermore, the most recent report I wrote was on HAZOP. Here I described
HAZOP as a process, talked about the advantages and disadvantages and even did a HAZOP
investigation on a depolymerisation of PET plant around a Heat exchanger unit. I believe that
the experience gained through working through my own HAZOP and different health and
safety analysis methods will be beneficial in this graduate scheme.

From my work experience in retail, we have always been told in each department I worked in
whether being in clothing or a café, that the customer is always right. I believe that this is
applicable in engineering as well. The service/product that we provide always has to be
developed and improved in order to maintain the high-quality service/product the customers
are expecting. I know how to handle situations with customer complaints, and I am confident
these interpersonal skills gained in retail is transferrable in engineering especially when
working with clients, partners and all different types of stakeholders.

If given an opportunity, I know I will be a valuable asset to your company whereby I can
develop on the experiences, skills and knowledge I have gained in Chemical Engineering. I
hope I can utilise these skills within the job role and make a positive outcome to people’s
lives. I believe I have the strength, character, and personality to become part of the
engineering industry, ready to meet new people and look forward to a career of facing
challenges.

Yours Sincerely,
James Tomy
