4.1.3 Driver’s seat

The cushioned seat (shock--cushioning seat) with automatic
weight adjustment protects the driver against mechanical
vibrations. The vibration behaviour can be adjusted to the
conditions (driver, road surface, axle load, suspension). The seat
can be heated and equipped with a safety belt (three point seat
belt). It can be set to any position and can be locked at seat
height.
Set the seat according to your own requirements.

Driver’s seat:
-- Only set when the vehicle is stationary and the
parking brake is engaged. Setting the seat
while driving can distract the driver from the traffic
situation.
The seat fixing device has to latch audibly into place.

-- When setting the seat, assume a relaxed,

--non--strenuous position and be sure that
the safety belt is properly put on.

-- Before getting out, lower the seat completely (press

button 3 exiting aid), otherwise the seat will rebound
and your legs could be caught between the steering
wheel and the seat. Lift the armrest up and then
turn back / pull out the ignition key.

4.1.4 Headrest

The headrest (14) can be adjusted for height and angle

independent of the backrest.

Set the headrest so that the rear part of the head is

supported at about the height of the eyes.

4.1.5 Safety belt

The safety belt system incl. the seat belt anchorage points is an
essential part of the driver’s seat. No subsequent modifications
are allowed. If modifications are made, the operating licence will
expire.

The use of safety belts is a regulation in many countries.

In the interest of your own safety, always put on the safety belts.

Fastening the safety belt:

Pull the belt with the latch plate (15) over your shoulder and
lap. The belt may not be twisted.
Press the latch plate (15) into the belt buckle (16) until it locks
audibly.
The belt must always be taut. Check for tightness regularly.
If need be, tension the lap belt by pulling the shoulder belt
upwards.

Releasing the safety belt:

Press the red button (17) in the belt buckle (16).

Bring the latch plate (15) back to the initial position.

Automatic safety belt winder -- operation

The automatic safety belt winder for the safety belt locks the belt
pull--out during vehicle deceleration in all directions and when
pulling down on the belt quickly.

Functional test
The locking function of the automatic can be checked by pulling
the belt quickly.

-- Fasten your safety belt before driving

-- All safety belts are only to be used for one person.

-- Three point seat belts are not for people shorter than
150 cm.
These people require special equipment for protection
in the case of an accident (because safety belts were
not correctly fastened).

-- Avoid seat positions that interfere with the

correct course of the safety belt. Set the backrest to
almost 90°.
Your back should touch the backrest. The belt
must run across the middle of your shoulder.

-- Safety belts that have been placed under heavy strain

during an accident must be replaced.
Have belt anchors checked by a specialist workshop.

-- Replace damaged safety belts.

-- Belts may not run across sharp edges.

-- No changes may be made to the safety belts.

4.1.6 Door controls

Risk of accidents and injury!

Only drive with correctly closed doors.

4.1.7 Window controls (Z 200 141, Z 171 027)

The vehicle is equipped with automatic electric windows.

Risk of injuries from becoming trapped.

Take extra care when closing the windows. In case you
get caught, the system does not have an automatic
auto--reversal / switch off for the closing motion; i.e. the
window panel presses with all its strength upwards until
the “Open window” command is given.
The windows may only be closed when the operator has
a clear view of the windows and is sure that no--one
could become trapped in the closing window.
Only the vehicle driver may activate the electrical
window opener; other passengers are to be warned of
the danger by the vehicle driver.

Risk to life and limb, in particular with children!

To avoid someone becoming trapped as a result of
incorrect use, the vehicle operator may only leave the
cab when he has removed the ignition key from the
ignition lock.
The vehicle driver must be aware of the situation; this is
his responsibility.

Allocation and arrangement of the controls:

The controls (dual button 24, 25, 26) are located in the door
mouldings on the driver / passenger side.
Driver’s side: (Z 200 141)

Running in the engine

For the sake of the life expectancy, operating safety and fuel
economy of the vehicle, it is extremely important that the
engine is not placed under full load during its
runninginperiod.

Guidelines for running in the engine

Up to 2000 km
-- Drive gently. Maximum 3/4 of the top speed for each gear.

After 2000 km
-- Slowly increase to maximum speed.

Damage--prevention measures

The following safety measures must be observed to prevent

injury to persons and damage to the engine, components or
cables.
-- Only start the engine when the batteries are properly
connected. Do not disconnect the batteries when the engine
is running.
-- In order to start the engine the electronic key of the chassis
data logger must be inserted and the battery switch must be
switched to ’function position’.
-- Only start the engine when the speed sensor is connected.
-- Never use a boost charger to start the engine.
Jump start only with separate batteries.
-- For rapid charging of the batteries, the battery terminals must
be disconnected. Follow the operating instructions for the
boost charger.
-- The batteries must be disconnected when electric welding
work is carried out, and the ”+” and ”--” cables are connected
to one another.
-- The lines of the control units may only be disconnected and
connected when the electrical system is switched off.
-- Switching the poles of the supply voltage for the control units
(e.g. by connecting the poles of the batteries incorrectly) can
lead to the destruction of the control units.
-- Tighten the plug connections on the injection system to the
prescribed torque.
-- For temperatures of higher than + 80° C (foundry furnace) the
control units must be removed.
-- Use only suitable test cables for taking measurements on
plug connections (Mercedes--Benz connector set).
-- Telephones and radio equipment which are not connected to
an external antenna can cause malfunctions to the vehicle’s
electronics and endanger the operating safety of the engine.

Before commissioning, make sure that you have read the

operating instructions of the engine manufacturer. These
are enclosed in part 4 of this documentation.
The following points are primarily limited to information
which specifically affects the crane.

Various electronic keys are delivered with the crane which can be
inserted in the corresponding opening (221) in the chassis cab:
-- blue key: driver’s key for operation of the crane.
-- green key: for reading out the saved data.
In order to transmit the data, the electronic key must be
inserted in a corresponding reader unit in the supplied PC.
In order to then evaluate the data, you must have the relevant
training by the manufacturer (VDO) of the data logger or the
program documents of VDO.
-- The other keys are for activation and calibration of the
system. These keys may only be used by specialist
personnel.

The relevant training by the data logger’s manufacturer (VDO) is

required in order to use the system.

To start the vehicle engine the crane’s electric system must be

connected to the vehicle’s batteries by activating the battery
switch and inserting the electronic key of the chassis data logger.

Risk of damage for the electric crane components!

Only once the ignition has been switched off may the
electronic key of the chassis data logger be removed and
then the crane electric system with the battery switch
separated from the vehicle batteries.
Do not use the battery switch or the electronic key of the
chassis data logger for regularly switching the engine off.
Shutting down the engine using the battery isolator should
only be done in an emergency.

The basis for the following procedures and instructions is always

that the electronic key of the chassis data logger has been
inserted and that the battery switch has created a connection
between the vehicle electric system and the vehicle batteries.

5.2 Checking before starting up:

Follow the instructions in the operating manual of the engine

manufacturer.

Checks before starting:

-- whether the parking brake (14) is applied (Z 501 154)
-- the fuel level on the multiple function display (MFA 10) (110,
Z 501 154)
-- the engine oil level (Z 501 059)
-- the cooling water level (Z 501 154; item 113)

Open the cover only when the coolant temperature is below

90° C.
Initially turn the cover only as far as the first detent so that
the excess pressure can be released.

-- the hydraulic oil level (Z 501 059)

When the engine is started, the hydraulic pumps for the

steering immediately run as well.
The engine must therefore not be started if the viscosity of
the hydraulic oil is above 1600 cSt (from –25°C) (see
corresponding information in Sect. 2 ” Operating Agents”, in
the lubrication and maintenance instructions).

-- that the transmission is in neutral, „N“ must be displayed (60,

Z 501 154) (section 7)

If the engine was switched off when in gear, ”NN” appears onthe
display when the ignition is switched on again. The cranecan only
be started and placed in gear, if it is first placed inneutral (”N”
appears on the display).

-- the engine cut--out switches on the chassis (optional) (one on

either side of the chassis frame; Z 501 059) these must not
be actuated (light 99 (Z 501 018) must not light up).

Starting procedure

Never start the engine without the batteries connected

properly.

Action steps for the starting aid with cable couplings / special
cable:
-- Place the transmission in neutral. The neutral gear position
must be shown in the display (N).
-- Start the engine using the ignition key (ignition lock, 135,
Z 170 845) without pressing down the accelerator pedal. If
required, interrupt the starting procedure after no more than
20 seconds and repeat after approx. 1 minute. Before starting
again, turn the key back to the stop. After three starting
attempts, take a short break.
-- Release the key after the engine has started. The idle speed
(approx. 550 rpm) is automatically regulated, in relation to the
coolant temperature. If necessary, the idle speed can be
increased when the vehicle is at a standstill (see
enginecontrol).

With the vehicle at a standstill, the engine running, the

parkingbrake applied and the gear in neutral, the speed is limited
at 2100 rpm and the engine only increases speed at a delay (if
the parking brake is released, the engine speed rises up to the
maximum of 2500 rpm when the accelerator pedal is pressed).

-- Immediately after the engine has started, keep your eye on

the oil pressure gauge. Caution! Do not rev up the engine if
there is no oil pressure displayed. If, after approx. 15
seconds, no oil pressure is displayed, switch off the engine
immediately and determine the cause of the fault.
-- If the engine fails to start after the third attempt, search for the
cause of the fault with the help of the operatinginstructions of
the engine manufacturer.

Release the ignition key as soon as the engine starts. On no

account should the starter be operated with the engine
running.

Do not press the accelerator when starting a warm engine.

Note after Starting

(Z 170 714)

Never disconnect the battery terminals when the engine is

running.

If no oil pressure is indicated on the multi--display (110) or

indicator light (112 -- oil pressure too low) comes on, switch
off the engine immediately and determine the cause of the
malfunction.

-- If indicator light (98, H 327 -- air filter clogged) comes on,

clean or replace the air filter elements.
-- If the indicator light for ”hydraulic oil filter clogged” (81, H314)
comes on when the hydraulic oil is warm, replace the filter.

Avoid running a cold engine at high revs.

-- Do not disconnect the battery with the engine running as the

alternator will be damaged.

Do not leave the engine running at a standstill to warm it up.

Switch off the engine immediately if:

-- falling or heavily fluctuating oil pressure
-- Loss of power and engine speed without having altered
the position of the accelerator and without any change in
the operating conditions;
-- heavily smoking exhaust
-- Coolant or oil temperature too high;
-- Abnormal engine noises.

5.4 Switching off

(Z 501 020)

Stop the engine as follows:

Apply the parking brake (14) to prevent the vehicle from

rolling.
RISK OF ACCIDENTS!
When switching off the engine without the parking brake
applied, the vehicle can be moved.
Place chocks under the wheels of the crane vehicle to
secure it additionally against rolling; particularly when
the crane is parked on aslope. (Z 160 077)

1. Release accelerator pedal (18). With an intermediate

speedset: select the idle position by means of self--return
rockerswitch (35).

2. Place the transmission in neutral. The neutral gear position

must be shown in the display (N).

Leave the engine running at idle speed for approx. 1--2 minutes
before switching it off:
-- if the coolant temperature is high (above 95° C);
-- after driving at full engine power (e.g. after driving up a slope),
to allow the exhaust turbocharger to cool down.

3. Turn the ignition key back up to the stop and remove (135).

When the ignition is in the “off” position, the transmission

automatically shifts to “neutral”.

5.6 Engine Cutout Switch (Optional)

(Z 501 060)

Your crane is equipped with engine cutout equipment. This

includes three engine cutout switches. One switch is located in
the superstructure cab on the dashboard (item 29). Two
additional engine cutout switches are located on the chassis
frame on the right-- and left--hand side (Y and Z).

The engine cutout switch is only guaranteed to work when the

parking brake is applied in the chassis cab and the transmission
is placed in “neutral”.

The engine/motor is switched off! In the chassis cab the indicator

light (99; engine cutout switch actuated) lights up. The engine
can only be restarted once all engine cutout switches have been
unlocked again.

5.7 “Quick Stop” with Air Shutoff Valve (Optional)

(Z 501 222, Z 58 667)

In order to operate in an atmosphere at risk of explosions (e.g.

air with easily flammable gases), your crane can be equipped
with an automatic engine stop device.

Using a shutoff flap between the air filter and engine the air flow
is cut off when the device is actuated.

For manual activation of the air shutoff flap there are engine rapid
stop switches on the crane.
Depending on the design, there is an additional engine rapid stop
switch in the cab over the dashboard. There are two other engine
rapid stop switches, one each on the right-- and left--hand side of
the chassis frame (Y and Z).

Independent of manual activation, the rapid stop device is

automatically initiated when a certain limit speed is exceeded. At
the same time the fuel supply is interrupted. The engine is
switched off.

The function of the engine rapid stop device is only ensured when
the parking brake has been activated and the transmission is
switched to ”neutral”.

Restarting the engine

The following must be carried out before the engine can be

restarted:

When working in the engine compartment you must

reach past engine components which move when the
engine is running.
In order for the resetting procedure to be carried out
without risks, you must therefore prevent the engine
from being started up when someone is still in the
engine’s danger zone.
If required, the ignition key must be removed and the
cabs must be locked.

1. Reset the shutoff flap (1) to the original position.

To do so, the setting lever (2) of the shutoff flap (1) must be
set back to the original position.

The shutoff flap is in the suction lead between the air filter and the
engine.

50--1--2050--407a_en 21/35
5

22/35 50--1--2050--407a_en
Engine 5

2. Check that all air guiding hoses (including the aftercooler

hoses between the engine and the aftercooler) are fitted
correctly and are fully unblocked.

Risk of damage!
When the shutoff flap is closed the engine cannot be started.
Repeated starting attempts result in engine damage.

If closing of the shutoff flap has been initiated by an engine rapid

stop switch:
3. Unlock the relevant engine rapid stop switch.

Now the engine can be restarted.

5.8 Electronic Engine Management

The chassis engine is equipped with an electronic control

system. This monitors both the engine and itself (self--diagnosis).

5.8.1 Engine control

(Z 501 020)

Idle speed / intermediate speed / max. working speed

In exceptional situations, when the vehicle is at a standstill (with

activated parking brake), the engine speed can be adjusted to
any value – between the idle speed and a fixed maximum
operating speed parameter of 2100/minute.

The speed is set using the double rocker button (35).

(35) Double rocker button,
green
Pressed up -- reduce speed
Pressed down -- increase speed (up to
nominalspeed)

When the outriggers are operated, an engine speed of 1400 rpm

is automatically set.

When the intermediate speed setting is selected the

enginespeed can only be altered up to a maximum working
speed of 2100 rpm by pressing accelerator pedal (18).

If the ignition switch (135) is placed in the zero position, the

revspeed setting which has been set is deleted. It must be reset.

550/minute to a maximum of 750/minute when the vehicle is at
a standstill (when the parking brake is activated it can be adjusted
from 550/minute to a maximum of 2100/minute).
1 Hold in position = increase idle speed.
Tap = increase idle speed by approx. 20 rpm
2 Hold in position = reduce idle speed.

Tap = reduce idle speed by approx. 20 rpm.

After releasing the lever the engine runs at the increased speed.

5.8.3 Reading Off the Fault Memory

(Z 170 847)

When warning light (90) lights up, the system has recognised a
fault.

When warning light (90) lights up:

-- Switch off the engine.

-- with the diagnosis device (Minidiag, Mercedes Benz),

connect to the diagnosis socket (14--pin) in the switch box
(in the chassis cab).

-- Switch the ignition on again

Do not start the engine.

When the engine is running fault codes cannot be deleted. If no
fault codes are displayed, check the fuse and grounding of the
diagnosis socket.

-- Call up the menu for reading the fault codes from the control
unit.

-- Call up the fault codes.

A description of all fault codes as well as a precise description of

how to use the diagnosis device are enclosed in separate
operating instructions of the engine manufacturer (see part 4).

5.8.4 Evaluation of the Displayed Faults

With the five--digit error code, the first digit indicates the
faultgroup (0, 1 or 2). Depending on which fault group is
displayed, you should proceed as follows:

-- Fault group 0

The fault can, if required, be rectified during the next service.

-- Fault group 1

The fault must be rectified as soon as possible.

Risk of accidents! You must reckon with altered running

6 Driving – General Information

Observe the stipulations of the operating permit and the

exceptions permitted in accordance with § 70 of the road traffic
licensing regulations (Federal Republic of Germany) or the
relevant national road traffic regulations.

Checks before Driving:

- that the mobile crane is in the correct transport condition

(see section 6.1)
The transport condition of the mobile crane depends on the
road traffic regulations applicable in the country in which
the crane is to be operated.
- vehicle lighting, indicator and brake lights (see section 1)
- the tyre pressures; the following values apply for all
the wheels:

Tyres Tyre pressure

14.00 R 25 10 bar
(Standard) (145 psi)

16.00 R 25 9 bar
(131 psi)

20.50 R 25 7 bar
(102 psi)

If the tyre pressure is too low, damage to the tyres is almost

unavoidable (see section 1)

- that the wheel nuts are securely tightened

- engine oil level – top up if required (see lubrication and
maintenance instructions).
- hydraulic oil level – if the oil level is too low in the
hydraulic tank, find the cause of the oil loss.

The engine speed should not exceed n = 2100 rpm until the
hydraulic oil has warmed up.
Stand: 28.KW/04

- coolant level – if the level is too low, determine the cause

and top up as necessary.

- the main boom must be lowered into the transport support
- the main boom head must be lashed to the basic boom
with the retaining rope (Z 155 106).
- Steering system:
Indicator light (85, H 320 - "steering circuit 1 no flow")
must go out shortly after the engine has started.
Since the emergency steering pump is driven by the rolling
vehicle (off about 10 km/h; 6,2 mph), indicator light (86,
H 319 -"steering circuit 2 no flow") goes out only when the
crane has started to move.

Driving with a defective steering system represents a

major safety hazard. Be sure to have any malfunctions
eliminated before starting to drive the mobile crane.

- As long as the indicator lights (143, H 344 and 144, H 345)

for independent rear axle steering light up, the steering is
not yet in the road travel position, ie check the switchover
from „independent rear axle steering“ to „steering for road
travel“ (see section 9.1 of these operating instructions).
- Brake display:
If a pressure of less than 5.5 bar (80 psi) is shown in the
display of the MFD 10 (110), the air tanks of the brake
display must be filled at medium engine speed. The
indicator light (101, H 334) goes out above 5.5 bar (80 psi).
If the parking brake (14) is applied, the indicator lamp
(106, H 339) lights up.
- Suspension level (see section 11):
Indicator lights (83), (84), (88) and (89) may not light up, if
necessary readjust the hydraulic suspension.
When driving on the road, the hydraulic suspension system
should not be blocked.

80 km/h (50 mph) (observe relevant national regulations).

Maximum speed should be determined with the road and

curve conditions in mind.

Axle loads of more than 12 t (26455 lbs) are not permitted

when driving on public roads in countries in which the EEC
regulations (or reduced axle loads) apply. If the crane is driven
on public roads with axle loads over 12 t (26455 lbs), the crane
operator is responsible for any consequences.

All components and plant are designed and rated for axle
loads of 12 t (26455 lbs) at maximum speed.
If this 12 t (26455 lbs) axle load is exceeded, the lifespan of
axles, wheel hubs, bearings, suspension cylinders and brakes
will be reduced. Wear on brake linings will be
increased in particular, with the subsequent risk of
overheating of the brakes and fading (boiling of the brake fluid).
Excessively high axle loads reduces braking deceleration; this
results in longer braking distances.

The braking system of your crane is designed and tested for an

axle load of 12 t (26455 lbs) at a total weight of 36 t (79380 lbs) in
accordance with EU and German road traffic regulations. A
reduction in the overall weight results in a reduction in the axle
loads, the crane is overbraked.
Apply the brakes carefully and moderately.

In this transport condition, the total weight of

36 t (79380 lbs) or the individual axle load of 12 t (26460 lbs)is not
exceeded. All technical data regarding drive characteristics on
dimension sheets etc. apply for this condition.

6.2 Driving

Start the engine (see section 5)

Moving the vehicle without the engine running is

prohibited (see section 14).

6.2.1 Starting and Changing Gear

Depending on the transport condition and incline, we

recommend that you start off in 2nd gear (preset)
(see section 7).
Only start driving with the vehicle when there is sufficient
engine oil pressure and supply pressure in the brake system.

- Warm up the engine in the lower gears at medium revs.

- Wait until the operating temperature is reached (70 – 95oC;
158oF - 203oF) before placing the engine under full load.

Do not start the vehicle rolling if:

- a supply pressure of below 6.8 bar (99 psi) is displayed

(brake circuit 1 or 2).
- the indicator light (70, “Fault in transmission”) lights up
(Z 170 879)
- the indicator light (90, “Engine fault”) lights up (see
section 5, reading off the fault memory) (Z 170 879).

Make sure that the pedals are unobstructed in their

movement. When using foot mats and carpets, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance. Do not place any objects
in the driver’s foot well. Secure or store all loose objects
(e.g. cans, bottles, tools, bags) to make sure that they do
not end up in the foot well area during driving. These
objects can get under the brake pedal, block it and make it
impossible to brake the vehicle.

Immediately after driving off, carry out a brake check on a

dry, non-skidding road surface (service and parking
brake). Make sure that the vehicle is braked evenly, does
not deviate to the right or left and decelerates without any
problems.
The brake linings must always remain free of oil and water.
Stand: 28.KW/04

If water has made its way to the brake linings, brake lightly
with the service brake until a full braking action is
achieved. Stop the crane immediately if any brake or brake
circuit fails at any time.

6.2.2 Speed Limitation

When driving observe the rev counter.

- Stay in the economic range.

- When driving downhill, make sure that the engine speed

does not enter the hazardous range (>2700 rpm).

If the engine speed rises above the maximum permitted

revs, the warning buzzer sounds. Once the maximum
permitted number of revs is exceeded, the engine
becomes quieter. Therefore do not shift or drive by what
you hear, but according to the rev counter. Avoid the
hazardous range (> 2700 rpm). Otherwise engine damage
can result.

The maximum speed of the vehicle is limited at 80 km/h

(50 mph). In some countries deviations are possible as a result
of statutory regulations. If the maximum speed of 80 km/h
(50 mph) is reached, the engine automatically reduces output
(be careful when overtaking). The driver is responsible for
making sure that the maximum speed is not exceeded.

6.2.3 Engine Control / Retarder Brake

Please refer to the sections on the Engine and Braking.

6.2.4 Cruise Control

Risk of accidents!
Do not switch on the cruise control on slippery road
surfaces. Risk of skidding!

The cruise control allows any speed over 15 km/h (9 mph) to

be stored (fixed). The vehicle then drives at the set speed.

Do not exceed the maximum speed in the individual gears

(observe the rev counter).
Only use the cruise control when the traffic conditions
allow a constant speed. It may not be possible to hold the
set speed when driving uphill or downhill. Take your foot
off the accelerator when the cruise control function is

The cruise control is switched on using lever (3) on the steering

column (Z 170 842).

- Accelerate the vehicle with the accelerator (over 15 km/h;

9 mph).

Lever in position:

1 Hold = accelerate. Release lever,

the speed that is reached is stored.
Tip = save the current speed or increase the
stored speed by 0.5 km/h (0.3 mph).

2 Hold = reduce speed. Release lever, the speed

that is reached is stored.
Tip = save the current speed or reduce the
stored speed by 0.5 km/h (0.3 mph).
Resume the stored speed that is
required.

Once the lever is released, the vehicle travels at the speed that
is set.

3 Tip = switch off cruise control.

The cruise control is automatically switched off:

- when the service or retarder brake is applied.
The set speed remains stored.

- at a speed below 15 km/h (9 mph).

The set speed remains stored.

- when the Temposet function is switched on.

The set speed remains stored.

After the clutch is engaged, the cruise control is reactivated.

By tipping lightly on the control lever (position 2) the vehicle
drives again at the stored speed.

- If the vehicle is accelerated with the accelerator pedal when

the cruise control is switched on, the stored speed is not
restored when the pedal is released.

6.2.5 Temposet (Maximum Speed Setting)

(Z 170 842)

Temposet (maximum speed setting)

Temposet can be used to limit the driving speed at 15 km/h
(9 mph) and above.

Activation:
- Accelerate vehicle up to the desired speed.
- Press button (4). The maximum speed is set.

Deactivation:
- Lever in position 3. The set maximum speed (speed limit) is
automatically cancelled.

The set maximum speed is automatically cancelled when the

ignition key is turned back to the initial position in the lock or
when the cruise control function is switched on (lever position 1
or 2).

- If the set maximum speed needs to be exceeded (e.g. when

overtaking): press down the accelerator pedal briefly past the
full acceleration position down to the floor (kick down). After
the vehicle accelerates, release the accelerator pedal and
press again. The set maximum speed is reactivated.

- If you want to increase the set maximum speed: press the

button, hold and accelerate the vehicle. Once the desired
speed is reached, release the button.

- If the set maximum speed is to be reduced: release the

accelerator pedal (if necessary, brake the vehicle). When the
desired speed is reached, press the button.

6.2.7 Driving over Hill Summits and Driving through De-

pressions
(Z 170 719)

When the crane is driven over hill summits or through

depressions, it must be ensured that all axles remain in contact
with the ground.
The crane operator shall bear sole responsibility for damage to
the crane chassis arising from an axle lifting off the ground
owing to the maximum suspension travel being exceeded or
suspension being locked, and the maximum permissible axle
loads being exceeded.

It is PROHIBITED to drive over hill summits and driving

through depressions when:
- the suspension is locked
- the axle load exceeds 14 t (30870 lbs)
as components MAY BREAK otherwise

Should an axle lift off the ground, proceed as follows:

1. Stop the crane in a straight line and engage the longitudinal

differential lock by pressing switch (126, S 331), indicator
light (140, H 341) comes on.

2. Drive over the summit of the hill at walking speed (2km/h;

1 mph)

When driving the crane:

- Avoid turning the steering wheel

- Observe the suspension pressure continuously.

If the pressure rises to 270 bar (3919 psi) in one of the
three suspension circuits, COMPONENTS MAY BREAK.
If a pressure of 300 bar (4354 psi) is reached, the sum
mit must not be driven over.
Reverse the crane carefully.

3. After driving over the summit, stop the crane immediately

6.2.8 Driving with Axle Loads Over 12 t (26455 lbs) up to

Max. 14.5 t (31966 lbs)

With the technically permissible crane transport condition

(observe also the national road traffic regulatiions), parts in
addition to the configuration described under 6.2.1 may be
carried.
The influence of the individual components on the axle load
should be taken from the table supplied in section 6.2.1.

- Before driving the mobile crane, observe all the

points under 6.2.1.

- The configuration described under 6.2.1 can be varied by

adding or removing individual components. As far as
possible, the axles should be under equal load. The
national regulations governing the axle loads must be
observed.

- For configurations with an axle load of up to a max.

14.5 t (31966 lbs), the maximum speed is 70 km/h
(43 mph) with 16.00 R 25 and 20.50 R 25 tyres.
With14.00 R 25 tyres the maximum speed is 50 km/h
(31 mph).
- The stopping distance will be longer due to the higher
gross crane weight.

6.2.9 Driving on the Construction Site in the Transport

Condition

The following basic rules must be followed:

- The differential lock may be engaged for brief periods only,

in order to overcome obstacles when driving in a straight
line.
- Drive speeds in excess of 5 km/h (3 mph) generally overload
the tyres and drive when the differential is engaged.
The differential lock must be disengaged immediately after
the obstacle has been overcome.

The crane must be stationary when the differential locks

are switched on or off.

- Before driving, always check the tyre pressures. It must

correspond to the table values for all wheels.

16.00 R 25 9 bar
(131 psi)

20.50 R 25 7 bar
(102 psi)

(Z 501 022)
- The hydraulic suspension of the crane chassis must not
be locked (see Sect 11) and must be levelled.
- Release the handbrake (14).
- Start the vehicle by pressing drive pedal (18).
- The vehicle is steered by steering wheel (2).
- To stop the vehicle, press the footbrake pedal (19).

When driving over hill summits or ramps, the same

regulations apply as for "Driving over Hill Summits" on the

6.2.10 Driving in Erect Mode

When driving the crane in the erected condition (with and without
load), in addition to the conditions described in sections 6.1 to 6.3, the
following points must be observed:

- The ground must be level and capable of supporting the vehicle.

- The gradient of the ground must not exceed the following values:
2% in the direction of travel
1% laterally (without additional equipment)
0.5% laterally (with additional equipment)

- Before driving the mobile crane in erect mode, always check the
tyre pressures.
Tyres Tyre pressure
14.00 R 25 10 bar
(Standard) (145 psi)

16.00 R 25 9 bar
(131 psi)

20.50 R 25 7 bar
(102 psi)

- Care should be taken if there is a side wind, particularly if the wind

is acting in the same direction as a lateral gradient

- Support the crane on the outriggers, max. support area (see

Section 12).

- Slew the superstructure (main boom) to the front (see operating

instructions for the superstructure, Section 8 ).

- Apply the slew gear parking brake (94, S14). (Z 501 081)

- The independent rear steering must be switched off.

- Lock the suspension (see Section 11.4).

- Fully retract the outrigger cylinders until the supports are just above
the ground.

6.3 Preparation of the Dolly (Optional)

The dolly is not supplied by the crane manufacturer.

Mounting, operation and servicing of this component are

therefore the exclusive responsibility of the crane
operator. The crane operator is responsible for mounting,
operating and servicing the dolly carefully and in
accordance with national regulations.
Observe the dolly manufacturer's instructions.

If you have to set the boom down onto a dolly for driving,
the slew gear must be enabled subsequently using ball
valve (1) (float position) (Z 170 394) and ball valve (3)
actuated to block the pistonside oil supply to the luffing
cylinder.

The luffing cylinder must be fully retracted when ball valve

(3) is actuated after the main boom has been set down (if
necessary, extend the rear outriggers further).

Before driving with a dolly, the slew gear brake in the

superstructure must have been released with the
superstructure engine running (Z 170 462).
The braking cylinder in the slew gear must furthermore be
locked when the brake is released.
To do this, push in lever (1) on the slew gear and lock with
clip pin (2) at point "X" (Z 170 463).

Drive with particular care when the dolly is attached. Care

should especially be taken when negotiating bends
(tendency to swing out, lateral drifting, shifting of centre of
gravity).
Observe the hydraulic pressure in the suspension circuits
while driving. If the hydraulic pressure in the rear axles
increases sharply (increased axle load) while driving on
even ground, the luffing cylinder must be fully retracted
again (see note above). There is otherwise a risk of the
dolly no longer being in sufficient contact with the ground.

Required gear level (8) when the engine is started and when
auxiliary drives are used.

- If the engine was switched off when in gear, ”NN” appears

on the display when the ignition is switched on again. The
crane can only be started and placed in gear, if it is first
placed in neutral (”N” appears on the display).

On no account should the crane be allowed to roll with the

gear lever in neutral postion.

7.2 Starting
(Z 501 024)

Note the following points when starting:

1. Start the engine with the transmission in neutral ("N") as

described in Section 5.
2. Preselect the desired gear with gear lever (8).
3. Release the parking brake (14).
4. Depress accelerator pedal (18) to set the mobile crane
in motion.
5. When selecting the gear (1, 2, 3) the next highest gear must
be chosen at the latest when the nominal speed
(n=2500 rpm) is reached.
6. All gears can be selected under load.

Do not exceed the rated engine speed of 2500 rpm or the

maximum speed of 2700 rpm when driving on down-
grades.

At temperatures under -15oC, start the engine and allow

the transmission to warm up in neutral position for
approx. 10 to 15 minutes.

Do not place the transmission under full load until an

engine operating temperature of 70-95 degrees C has been
reached.

7.3 Stopping
(Z 501 024)

The mobile crane can be stopped at any time, irrespective of

the position of the gear lever.

To stop the crane:

1. Release the accelerator pedal (18).

2. Depress the foot brake (19).
3. Parking brake (14) applied.

7.4 Driving on Downgrades

(Z 501 024)

Select an appropriate gear before starting to drive on the

downgrade.

To prevent the engine from overspeeding, the transmission is

equipped witha downshift safety device - if it is not possible to
change down, the vehicle should be braked accordingly.

Do not exceed the rated engine speed of 2500 rpm or the

maximum speed of 2700 rpm when driving on down-
grades.

7.5 Procedure when the Crane is Stuck

If the crane becomes stuck in poor terrain, attempt to free it by

engaging forward and reverse gears alternately.

1. Engage the differential lock (see Section 10).

2. Select 1st gear with the gear lever (8).
3. Depress the accelerator pedal and start to drive
forwards.
4. Release the accelerator pedal and apply the parking
brake.
5. Engage reverse gear.
6. Depress the accelerator pedal and release the parking
brake at the same time etc.
7. Repeat this alternative driving forwards and
backwards until the vehicle is free.

If these manoeuvres do not bring the desired success, on no

account should you try to free the crane by force.

8 Brakes
When driving on long downhill stretches, make use of the
braking effect of the engine by applying the sustained-action
brake, see section 8.4.

When the sustained-action brake is switched on, the

transmission automatically switches down to the next gear in
relation to the speed and revs.

After the brakes have been heavily used do not switch off the
vehicle immediately, but continue to drive for a short while to
allow the brakes to cool down in the driving breeze.

After driving on a wet road surface, especially when the road

has been salted, brake the vehicle fairly strongly before
switching off the vehicle. As a result of the heat that is created
the brake discs are dried off (avoiding corrosion).

8.1 Braking System

(Z 501 025)

The mobile crane has a dual circuit brake system. To check

that the brake system is fully functional, you can call up the
brake pressure on the display of the MFD 10 (110) using button
(118). At a brake pressure below 5.5 bar in brake circuit 2, the
LED in button (118) flashes. At a brake pressure below 5 bar in
brake circuit 1 or 2 indicator light (101, H 334) lights up.

8.1.1 Properly Sealed Compressed Air Brake System

- Leave the engine running until a supply pressure of max. 8.5
bar is displayed on the display instruments. Switch off the
engine.
- The system is properly sealed when the fall in pressure
within 3 minutes is no more than 0.4 bar.
- To check the system for leaks in the supply tank, valves and
brake cylinders, press the brake pedal down to brake
partially (3 bar). Observe the display instruments. With the
brake pedal remaining in the same position, the gauges must
not recede visibly within the next 3 minutes.

Risk of accidents!

A leaking compressed air brake system endangers the

operating and traffic safety of the vehicle. Have the brake
Stand: 40.KW/00

system checked in a specialist workshop.

8.2 Service Brake

(Z 501 025)

The service brake (19) is the brake for normal driving

operation. The dual-circuit brake system works on all wheels.

8.3 Parking Brake

(Z 501 025)

The parking brake must be applied when the vehicle is parked.

Risk of accidents!
If required (e.g. on a hill) the vehicle must be additionally
secured with chocks to prevent it rolling.

It is opened with compressed air and closed with springs which

are integrated in the brake cylinders of the standard driven
axles.

Applying
- Pull the brake lever back from the released position to the full
brake position (lever locked). The indicator light (106, H339)
“parking brake applied” lights up. For partial braking, the lever
must be held in the desired position as it otherwise returns to
the released position.

Risk of accidents!
Always check that the lever is locked in the full braking
position as it can otherwise slip back into the released
position.
It must not be possible to push the lever back into the
released position (without actuating the lock).

Releasing
To release the parking brake properly, the supply pressure
must equal at least 5.5 bar (brake circuit 2). Indicator light (101,
pressure gauge brake circuits 1 and 2) must not light up.

- Lift and hold the lock of the parking brake valve. Swing the
lever forward up to the stop. The indicator light (106, H339)
“parking brake applied” must go out.

If there is insufficient supply pressure in the spring accumulator

brake circuit, the spring accumulator parking brake can, in an
emergency, be released mechanically (see section 14).

Test position:
In the test position you can check to see if the parked crane will
be held on an incline by the spring accumulator force of the
crane (with trailer).

Risk of accidents!
Before leaving the vehicle:
- Swing back the lever of the parking brake valve up to the
full brake position. Press the lock of the parking brake
valve down and hold in position. Swing the lever into the
test position. During the check, hold the lever in the test
position.
If the crane cannot be held by the spring accumulator
force, additionally secure the crane with chocks to
prevent it from rolling.

It can be used as an emergency brake in the event of service

brake failure.

Since the parking brake does not act on all the wheels, its
braking effect is less than that of the service brake. Only
use the brake to stop the crane in an emergency and
immediately repair the brake fault.

- When using the parking brake as an emergency brake,

move lever (14, Z 501 025) on the hand brake valve quickly
but without jerking. Do not allow the lever to engage.
The braking effect can be infinitely varied, similar to that of
the service brake.

Brakes 8

(Z 170 849, Z 501 026)

When driving on long downhill stretches, utilise the braking

effect of the engine by selecting a lower gear or by applying
lever (3) sustained-action brake.

Control lever (3) on the steering column is used to activate the

sustained-action brake (engine brake/retarder). The sustained-
action brake is only applied when it is moved out of the “0”
position. The lamp 108, H 337 flashes.

When ABS is activated, the sustained-action brake is

automatically switched off.

If, when the sustained-action brake is applied, the service

brake is applied, the transmission shifts down, depending on
the driving situation.

Risk of accidents!

On a slippery road surface, do not switch on the engine

brake or retarder. The wheels can otherwise lock. (Risk of
skidding).

8.4.1.1 Engine Brake (Z 170 849)

Both engine brake levels (fixed throttle brake / exhaust brake)

are automatically activated.
The effect of the engine brake depends on the engine speed
(high engine speed = high engine brake effect).
The engine brake is only effective at an engine speed above
900 rpm and can be used up to approx. 2700 rpm.

The engine brake is especially designed for use on long

downhill stretches. The engine brake is applied by pulling lever
(3) (level 1).
The crane is then braked during travel when a gear is selected.

8.4.1.2 Retarder (Optional) (Z 501 026)

The retarder is mainly designed for constant use and relieves

the service brake. The retarder should especially be used
during extended downhill driving. The retarder is switched on
(indicator 107 is lit up) by pulling lever (3) (stages 2 – 5). Each
power stage represents a certain braking power. However, the
service brake must be used for a complete stop.

During braking, the step switch must be switched from

stage to stage and cannot be pulled fully down at once.
It can be returned to the 0 position in one go however.

Once the crane has come to a standstill, the retarder must

be switched off as otherwise the battery will become
discharged.

7 Sustained-action brake cruise control

Reduce speed, save

The stored speed is maintained if the braking effect of the

sustained-action brake is sufficient.
The speed can be changed by actuating the lever (level 6 or 7).

- If the sustained-action brake effect is to be increased (e.g.

from level 2 to 3 or 4), the vehicle is automatically slowed
down up to the maximum braking effect of the sustained-
action brake. If the actuating lever is then shifted back by at
least one level (e.g. from level 3 to 2), the vehicle accelerates
again to the stored speed.
- The stored speed is automatically deleted when the key is
turned back to the stop in the ignition

8.5 Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

(Z 501 026)

The ABS prevents the wheels from locking independently of the

road surface conditions, commencing from walking speed.

Function check:
Insert the key in the ignition lock and turn to the driving position.
The indicator light (102) lights up for approx. 2 seconds.

The indicator must light up and go out after 3 seconds or

once the vehicle is driven. If the indicator does not light up
properly, flashes or does not go out, anti-lock protection is
not given.

Risk of accidents.
- If a fault is shown, the braking behaviour of the vehicle
can change. Drive with extra caution. Have the fault
rectified as soon as possible by a specialist workshop.

Braking with anti-lock protection (ABS)

- In hazardous situations, the brake pedal should be fully

actuated. This ensures that all wheels are controlled and that
optimum deceleration of the vehicle is achieved.

- During ABS control, the sustained-action brake is

automatically switched off.

Brakes 8

(Z 501 026)
- If the crane is driven with a trailer without ABS, this can be
over-braked when the brakes are applied fully. In this case
the driver must keep an eye on his trailer in the rear-view
mirror. The engine wagon remains steerable with ABS
allowing the driver to keep his trailer stable.
- If the indicator light (103, “ABS check, trailer, or fault”) or
indicator light (102, “ABS check, crane”) and indicator light
(103, “ABS check, trailer, or fault”) lights up, the ABS for the
trailer or for the crane and trailer is switched off. If the fault
(103, “ABS check, trailer, or fault”) is shown alone, the trailer
can be overbraked. In this case, the driver must keep an eye
on his trailer in the rear-view mirror. The engine wagon
remains steerable allowing the driver to keep his trailer
stable.

Risk of accidents!
The anti-lock protection does not replace the need for
correct and safe driving procedures in accordance with
the traffic and road surface conditions. Track-holding and
steerability of the vehicle are improved during braking.
The ABS is not able, for example, to safeguard against
driving too close or driving into bends too fast.

“ABS” switch on /off

The ABS function is switched off using switch (43). When the
ABS is switched off, the braking distance can be reduced off-
road and on uneven roads (soft or extremely uneven roads).

The ABS can be switched off and on when the vehicle is at a

standstill (key in ignition in driving position) or during driving.

The ABS is automatically switched on when the engine is

switched off and on again. When driving off-road, switch off the
ABS again.

Risk of accidents!
- The ABS must be switched on on public roads.
- The wheels can lock when the ABS is switched off.

Steering 9

9 Steering

9.1 General System Description

The steering of the crane chassis is made up of a hydraulic

dual--circuit steering system and an optional electric--hydraulic
rear--axle steering (auxiliary steering system) for construction
site mode.

Steering variant 6 x 4 x 2

In the road and construction site mode the driving direction is

determined by axle 1 which is steered with the steering wheel (2).

Axles 2 and 3 are rigid.

Steering variant 6 x 6 x 6

In the road and construction site mode axle 1 is steered with the
steering wheel. In the road mode axles 2 and 3 are pinned rigid.
In the construction site mode the axles 2 and 3 can be steered
by means of a separate steering circuit.
This enables various steering figures to be driven (see section
9.4.3).

A computer regulates the control of the electric--hydraulic rear

axle steering. Possible fault codes can be read out there. (For
information pertaining to this, see “Steering computer / fault
diagnosis / fault list”)

The oil supply of the hydraulic components consists of two

engine--dependent driven steering pumps and a
driving--dependent driven emergency steering pump.
During driving the emergency steering pump which is driven by
the moving crane controls the delivery rate from the main pump
2 and deactivates it as soon as the delivery rate is sufficient to
supply steering circuit 2.

If a steering circuit fails -- or in case of engine failure -- during

driving, the crane vehicle can still be steered until it comes to a
standstill. It does require increased effort, however, to move the
steering wheel and the steering reacts slower.

9.2 Safety Instructions

9.2.1 Safety instructions for protecting the system

Adjustments to the steering system may only be carried out

by our customer service.

Inspections / maintenance work must be carried out by

specialist personnel.

When working on the vehicle (painting, welding) suitable

measures must be put in place to protect the electronic
components (protection against overloading and static
charging).

With the installed option “electric--hydraulic rear--axle

steering (6 x 6 x 6) the steering computer must be removed
from the vehicle in particular when welding work is to be
carried out.

Never remove live plug connections.

4/41 50--1--2090A_en
Steering 9

9.2.2 Safety instructions for the protection of life and limb

for maintenance / service work

Caution risk of crushing!

When working on the steering system (e.g. inspections,
maintenance / service work, manual emergency steering)
there is an increased risk of crushing in the area of the
axles, wheels and crossties.
Always ensure that you have sufficient space for safe
movement.

Unauthorised persons must stay well clear of the turning

area of axles, wheels and crossties.

For maintenance work in the turning area of axles, wheels

and crossties, it must be ensured that these are prevented
from turning (switch off engine or deactivate steering
system).

If adjustment/setting work is required on the

electric--hydraulic rear axle steering (6x6x6) (for example
balancing the angle transducers), particular caution is
required.
It must be ensured that no movements can occur on axles,
wheels, or crossties. This can be achieved by switching off
the engine or removing the connector at the corresponding
non--return valves.

Caution following servicing work!

Errors in the steering system can lead to axle movements.
Keep a distance from the axles when starting the engine;
no--one may be in the slewing range of the axles, wheels or
crossties.

Caution with the manual emergency steering control!

Particular care is required in case of manual emergency
steering. When the valves for the manual emergency
steering control are actuated the crossties and the wheels
move on the affected axle.

9.3 Monitoring functions for all steering programs

(Z 501 133)

The most important components of the steering system (function

of the steering-- / emergency steering pumps and the optional
electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering for construction site mode)
are electronically monitored.

Faults and functions are indicated by the following indicator

lights:

85Steering circuit 1 no flow

86 Steering circuit 2 (incl. emergency steering) no

flow

With the optional electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering for

construction site mode:

143 Flashing signal: axle 2 and/or axle 3 are not in the

road travel condition -- and are therefore not
locked.

144 Electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering:

in operation (permanently lit); fault (flashing light)

If one of the indicator lights (85), (86, at driving speeds

above approx. 10 km/h) lights up or the indicator light
(144) flashes there is a malfunction. The operational
reliability of the vehicle is endangered.
Switch off the vehicle immediately and rectify the fault.

(Z 501 133)

After rectifying the fault the warning display can be reset by

switching off the ignition for approx. 10 seconds. This also serves
to check that the fault has actually been rectified.
Equally, if an indicator light lights up, the system can be reset to
try and remedy the fault. To this end, stop the vehicle, switch off
the engine (switch off the ignition approx. 10 seconds) and
restart.

9.3.1 Monitoring the steering / emergency steering pump

The steering / emergency steering pump is monitored by the
indicator lights (85) and (86) to ensure that it is working correctly.
These have the following meaning:

85Steering circuit 1 no flow

86 Steering circuit 2 (incl. emergency steering) no
flow
When the vehicle is stationary, only the indicator light (86) can
light up, as the emergency steering pump is not supplying in this
instance.

If one of the indicator lights (85), (86, at driving speeds

above approx. 10 km/h) lights up, there is a malfunction.
The operational reliability of the vehicle is endangered.
Switch off the vehicle immediately and rectify the fault.

Function check
Check all steering components regularly for mechanical damage,
corrosion and wear.
In particular pay attention to the angle transducers on the front
/ rear axles and their steering
(fixed properly, no corrosion). Corroded parts must be replaced.

9.3.2 Monitoring the electric-- hydraulic rear-- axle steering

(steering variant 6 x 6 x 6 for construction site mode)

(Z 501 133)

The function of the electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering is

monitored during construction site mode by the function and
indicator light (144).

Flashing of the indicator light (143) signals that the axle 2 and/or
axle 3 are not in the road travel condition, i.e. that they are not
locked.

When the electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering is switched on,

the indicator light (144) lights up permanently.
Flashing of the indicator light (144) signals a fault on the
electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering.

Function check

Regular inspections must be carried out to ensure that all

steering units, control units and monitoring equipment are fully
functional. Check for irregularities, e.g. leaks or changing
displays.

9.4 Steering programs

(Z 501 133)

9.4.1 Selection of the Steering Programme “Road Travel”

or “Construction Site Operation”

With the lockable switch “Enable steering programs” (123) the

system can be set to the steering program “road travel” (switch
not actuated) or ”construction site mode” (switch actuated).
For “construction site mode” the indicator light (144) lights up.

To change back to the program “road travel” see 9.4.4.

For normal road travel no special measures need to be carried

out (no actuation of switch!).

For special construction site mode different steering figures

can be driven:
-- “Tight cornering”,
-- “Diagonal steering”,
-- “Rear--axle steering”

The changeover from road travel to construction site mode

(switch 123) is only permitted below a max. permitted speed of

(Z 501 134)

Caution, the vehicle swerves out.

The steering program “road travel” must be selected for driving

on public highways.
In the program “road travel” the axles are steered as follows:
-- Front axle 1 with the steering wheel.
-- Axles 2 and 3 are fixed (6 x 4 x 2) or pinned rigid (6 x 6 x 6)

The electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering (optional) may

not be switched on for road travel, the indicator lights

9.4.3 Steering program “construction site mode”

(Steering variant 6 x 6 x 6)

(Z 501 108, Z 501 133)

With this steering system axle 2 can be steered independently of

axle 1. Axle 3 is steered by means of a computer--controlled
separate hydraulic circuit and adapts to the steering angle,
relative to the position of axles 1 and 2, of the desired driving
direction.

The electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering may not be

switched on either for ”road travel” or for ”driving in the
configured condition”.

For the steering variant 6 x 4 x 2 there are no additional steering

programs available.

The following steering figures can be driven:

-- “Tight cornering” (steering figure “a”)
-- “Diagonal steering” (steering figure “b”)
-- “rear--axle steering” (steering figure “c”)

Enabling of the steering program ”construction site mode” is

only permitted:
-- on construction sites / private roads
-- when the crane is in a transport condition
(boom lowered, axle loads max. 17 t)

The ground conditions

must be suitable for driving, i.e. flat and even ground, no dips or
rises in the ground, no obstructions.
The ground must be able to support the individual axle loads (up
to 17 t)
and the overall weight.

By actuating the lockable switch (123) the electric--hydraulic

rear--axle steering is activated (only at speeds below 5 km/h).
The indicator light (144) lights up. The mechanical pinning is then
unlocked.

The indicator lights (143) ”steering (axle 2 and/or 3) not locked”

(road travel prohibited) shows when the system has been
uncoupled.

The indicator light (144) also serves as a fault light of the

electronically controlled steering. If the light flashes when the
independent rear axle steering is activated, there is a fault. Inform
the customer service.

Additional information on the subject “steering computer / fault

diagnosis / fault list” in the sub--point 9.5 of this section.

When the rear--axle steering is activated a speed lock is activated

(up to max. 20 km/h).
When switching back to road travel mode axles 2 and 3 must be
pinned again to deactivate the speed lock. This procedure can be
carried out when the vehicle is being driven (see section 9.4.4)

For reasons of stability, the suspension must be set to the

“four--circuit system”.

The differential locks must not be actuated in the steering

figures “manual rear--axle steering” and “diagonal
steering”.
With the steering figures “tight cornering” and “driving away
from the wall” switching the differential locks on must be
avoided.

The crane may only be driven at walking speed (max. 5

km/h).

9.4.3.1 Shared characteristics of all steering programs for

the “construction site mode”

(Z 501 133)

-- -- The basic release of the various steering programmes

“Construction site operation” is done by pressing the switch
(123) at speeds < 5 km/h.
-- At higher speeds the switch (92) can be activated, however,
there will be no release of the steering programmes
’Construction site operation’. In this case, the buzzer sounds.
-- In the steering programs “construction site mode” only a
driving speed of up to 20 km/h can be achieved (speed lock).

9.4.3.2 ”Tight cornering” (steering figure ”a”)

(Z 501 108, Z 501 133)

(Steering centre point in extension of axle 2)

The front axle is steered with the steering wheel.

If axle 2 is not adjusted manually and remains in the
straight--ahead position, the 3rd axle steers in the opposite
direction to axle 1. The vehicle then achieves a narrower turning
circle.

Driving speed is limited.

Driving the steering figure “Tight cornering”:

-- Reduce driving speed to < 5 km/h.

-- Actuate switch (123) ”enable steering programs”.
The indicator light (›144‹) lights up. The mechanical pinning
is unlocked. The indicator light (143) “axle 2 and/or 3 not
locked” shows when the system has been uncoupled.
-- Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the cornering.
Axle 3 steers in the opposite direction to axle 1.

Engage the road travel mode, see 9.4.4.

9.4.3.3 ”Diagonal steering” (steering figure ”b” (crab travel))

(Z 501 108, Z 501 133)

Steer axle 1 into the direction subsequently required using the

steering wheel. Using lockable switch (123) switch on “enable
steering programs” and at the same time set axle 2 diagonally in
the same direction as axle 1 by pressing button (15). Axle 3 is
automatically set in the same direction as axle 2.

Driving speed is limited.

Driving steering figure “diagonal steering”:

-- Reduce driving speed to < 5 km/h.

-- Steer axle 1 with the steering wheel in the subsequent driving
direction.
-- Actuate switch (123) ”enable steering programs”.
The indicator light (›144‹) lights up. The mechanical pinning
is unlocked. The indicator light (143) “axle 2 and/or 3 not
locked” indicates when the system has been uncoupled.
-- Set axle 2 in the same direction as axle 1 by pressing button

9.4.3.4 “Rear-- axle steering” (steering figure “c”)

(Z 501 108, Z 501 133)

Align axle 1 in the straight--ahead position. Switch on lockable

switch (123) “enable steering programs” and at the same time set
axle 2 diagonally by pressing button (15). Axle 3 is automatically
set in the same direction as axle 2.

When the crane is equipped with the tyres 20.5 R 25 the steering
figure “c” is not possible. Axle 3 always steers then in the same
direction as axle 2 (steering figure “b”).

The use of the ”electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering” can lead to

unfavourable rolling conditions for individual tyres and to higher
tyre wear as a result whenever the wheels are turned at greater
angles.

Driving speed is limited.

Driving the steering figure ”rear--axle steering”:

-- Reduce driving speed to < 5 km/h.

-- Actuate switch (123) ”enable steering programs”.
The indicator light (›144‹) lights up. The mechanical pinning
is unlocked. The indicator light (143) “axle 2 and/or 3 not

9.4.4 Switching off the electric-- hydraulic rear-- axle steering

/ placing axles 2 and 3 in the road travel position

(Z 501 108, Z 501 133)

To place the axles in the road travel condition, these must be

pinned again in the straight--ahead position.
This procedure can be carried out either stationary or when
driving slowly.
If, for example on loose ground, the adjustment force of the
actuating cylinders is insufficient to turn the wheels into the
straight--ahead position, the crane must first be driven onto a
more favourable road surface.

Recommended procedure:

1. Place all axles in the straight--ahead position

-- for steering figures (b) and (c) (see section 9.4.3.3 and
9.4.4.4) using self--return rocker switch (15)
-- for steering figure (a) (see section 9.4.3.2) using
steering wheel (2)

2. Actuate lockable switch (123) again

-- The indicator light (144) goes out.

-- Indicator light (143) goes out when axle 2

and 3 are pinned in the straight--ahead position.

3. If pinning does not take place (indicator light 143 ”steering

not locked” remains lit) self--return rocker switch (15) must be
used to make short steering movements to the left and right
so that the locking bolts of axles 2 and 3 can engage.
If required, axle 3 can be placed in the locking position by
turning the steering wheel.

9.5 Steering Computer / Fault Diagnosis / Fault List

(Z 501 135)

The steering computer is in the floor compartment of the driver’s

cab under the passenger seat. To access the steering computer,
the complete seat must be pushed into the forward position and
folded up and out -- together with its baseplate -- against the front
window.

Risk of injury!
The raised seat must be secured in place with suitable
means (e.g. wooden block, strut) to prevent it falling
backwards.

9.5.1 Operating functions

(Z 501 135)

It is possible to operate the steering computer using a CAN

diagnosis display (Z 501 135, “L” (not supplied by TD))
Directly on the steering computer are control and display
elements (A, F1 -- F4) (Z 501 135, “R”).
The buttons and DIP switches have the following basic functions:

ESCAPE button (F1):

-- Exit the current menu.
-- End without saving.
-- Back one entry position.

MINUS button (F2):

-- Back one selection point (e. g. previous fault).
-- Reduce value by 1.

PLUS button (F3):

-- One selection point further (e. g. next fault).
-- Increase value by 1.

ENTER button (F4):

-- Activate selected menu.

9.5.2 Registration of a fault

(Z 501 133, Z 501 135)

The electric--hydraulic rear--axle steering has a self--diagnosis

system.
When the system has recognised faults, indicator light (144)
flashes.

At the same time, although not visible to the driver while driving,
all faults are displayed on the steering computer (display A).
∗ Active faults are always displayed by a flashing indicator light
(144).
∗ Faults that occur remain active until the ignition is switched
off, regardless of whether the fault still exists or not.
∗ An active fault is automatically stored in the error memory.

Caution !
When the indicator light (144) is flashing, the system has
recognised a malfunction. Determine the cause of the fault
and rectify as soon as possible.
An attempt can be made to rectify the fault by resetting the
system. To this end, stop the vehicle, switch off the engine
(switch off the ignition approx. 10 seconds) and restart.

Caution RISK OF ACCIDENTS !

When the indicator light (144) is flashing, the operational
safety of the steering is no longer guaranteed.
Stop vehicle immediately; there is a great risk of accidents.
Never drive with a defective steering system!

9.5.2.1 Fault display on screen (A) of the steering computer

Display in the fault--free condition

(Z 501 136)

CAN diagnosis display (Z 501 136, “L”)

In addition to the display “no error”, in the second text line a “ >
” character moves from left to right. This moving display signals
that the steering computer is active and the software is being
processed.

ON--BOARD display (Z 501 136, “R”)

On the 7--segment display the outer segments light up one after
the other.

Display of active faults

(Z 501 137)

As soon as the system has recognised a fault, the display

changes to the fault code screen.
Faults are described according to location of fault, type of fault
and category of fault. All three individual codes are displayed.
-- Example fault location: 10
-- Example fault type: 07
-- Example fault class: 01

If several faults exist at the same time, the display automatically

switches to the next fault after 2.5 seconds.

If all faults have been rectified, the display changes back to the
fault--free status (”no error”, “ >” character) and/or rotating
segment display of the 7--segment screen.

9.5.3 error memory / fault codes

Up to 32 various faults with 3 fault codes each can be stored in
the error memory of each steering computer. If the error memory
is full, the first entered fault is overwritten.
The fault codes can be read off the display of the steering
computer. They are subdivided according to the location, type
and category.
On the screen of the CAN--diagnosis display the first line contains
the fault number and the second line contains the 3 fault codes
that symbolise location, type and fault category.
On the ON--BOARD display the 3 fault codes are displayed one
after the other. The procedure for reading off the fault memory
with the CAN diagnosis display and/or. with the ON--BOARD
operating elements is the same.

9.5.3.1 Activate / read off error memory

(explained using the CAN diagnosis display)

(Z 52 120, Z 52 121, Z 501 122)

To read off the error memory with the display (A), first the menu
point ”error memory” must be selected in the menu for special
functions.

Select menu special functions:

The menu for special functions is activated by pressing the ESC
and ENTER keys (F1, F4) at the same time for at least 3 seconds.
The change is made when the screen switches to “i/o data
display”.

Continue to menu point “error memory”:

By pressing the PLUS key (F 3) you change from the “i/o data
display” to the “error memory”.

Activate error memory:

By pressing the ENTER key (F4) the error memory function is
activated. The display changes to the first fault that is stored. (Z
52 121)

Read out fault memory:

Using the PLUS and MINUS keys (F2 / F3) all faults can be read
out one after the other. At the end of the error memory (fault 32)
the system automatically returns to the beginning (fault 1).

9.5.4 Fault categories / fault reaction

(Z 501 133)

The faults are divided into the fault categories 0 to 3 and are
entered in the error memory of the steering computer.
The fault category determines the reaction of the steering to the
fault and the subsequent effect on steering operation.

Fault category 0
Display: No
reaction of the steering system: warning; steering behaviour
is not limited.
Effect: unlimited driving operation is possible.

Fault category 1

Display: Indicator light (144) + warning signal

Reaction of the steering system: steering of the axles / of the
system up to the next straight--ahead position.
Effect: Limited driving operation.

Fault category 2
Display: Indicator light (144) + warning signal
Reaction of the steering: independent steering in the
straight--ahead position.
Effect: Limited driving operation.

Fault category 3
Display: Indicator light (144) + warning signal
Reaction of the steering system: self--centring or locking of the
axle (safe state).
Effect: Limited driving operation.

If faults of categories 1, 2 and 3 are present in the error

memory, these codes must be provided to our customer
service department; they will then determine the causes of
the fault and issue suitable measures to be taken.

9.6 Manual emergency steering

Caution, increased risk of crushing!

When the valves for the manual emergency steering
control are actuated the crossties and the wheels move
on the affected axle. In the case of manual emergency
steering, particular caution is therefore required.
Make sure that you have sufficient space to move in
freely.

If the steering computer fails, all valves are without current; i.e.
the steered rear axles are locked in the current position. At the
same time, the locking bolts of axles 2 and 3 try to fall into place.

To enable these axles to be adjusted without the steering

computer, each axle can be moved individually by manually
actuating the solenoid valves and placed in a usable position, for
example to drive the vehicle out of a hazardous zone. The
requirement for this is that the steering hydraulics are available
(vehicle engine running).

Each axle is assigned to its own solenoid valve. The solenoid

valves are located in the middle on the right--hand side of the
vehicle.

50--1--2090A_en 41/41
Differential Locks 10

10 Differential Locks

If required, switch on the differential lock off-road or on a

slippery road surface.
The individual differential locks can only be applied in
sequence.

Do not switch on the lock while the wheels are being

turned “meshing”). Only switch on when the vehicle is at a
standstill or rolling at a slow speed (walking speed). Drive
off carefully, under certain circumstances the claws of the
differential locks may not be fully engaged. The indicator
light (140, longitudinal differential; 141, transverse diffe-
rential) lights up when the differential lock is engaged.

In order to distribute the drive torque from the engine to the

driven wheels and to equalize the wheel rotational speeds
when driving around corners or through curves, the mobile
crane is equipped with the following differentials:

- Longitudinal differential in distributor gear box

It splits the output torque from the drive gearbox between

the joint shaft of the driven rear- and front axle
(road travel 6 x 4).
In addition, axle 2 is engaged when the longitudinal lock is
applied (6 x 6 drive).

- Transverse differentials

Transverse differentials are integrated into the drive shafts

to split the drive torque between the left-hand and right-
hand wheels.

All the above differentials can be locked. When locked, a rigid

link is formed between the two outputs of the differentials.

Differential Locks 10

Engagement of the differential locks is necessary under the

following conditions:

spinning:
The transverse differentials have to be locked.

- Both wheels of a driven axle are spinning:

The longitudinal differential has to be locked.

- Both differential locks may be engaged at the same time

only in absolute emergency situations.

Risk of accidents!
When the differential lock is engaged, the steerability of
the vehicle is impaired. Never drive on a non-skidding road
surface with the differential lock engaged. When the diffe-
rential locks are engaged, the crane may only be driven at
speeds which can be achieved in 1st gear

Differential Locks 10

If the corresponding indicator light does not go out when the

differential locks are engaged, turn the wheels of the axle
slightly to the left and right a few times and then disengage the
differential lock again.

When the differentials are locked, drive parts may become

overloaded. Particular care must therefore be taken when
driving with locked differentials:

- Use the differential locks only when driving on very

difficult ground conditions (e.g. sand, mud, loose
ground)

- Engage the differential locks only shortly before

coming to the obstacle and switch off again
immediately after having overcome the obstacle.

- The risk of damage to the chassis is great if the diffe

rential locks are disengaged whilst drive wheels are
still spinning.

- When the transverse differential is locked, the vehicle

may only be driven straight ahead. When the
longitudinal differential is locked, the steering wheel
may be turned very carefully.

- Use the differential locks only when the crane is in the

transport condition or when the gross weight does not
exceed the transport weight. On no account should the
differential locks be engaged when the crane is
erected.

- Drive carefully. Do not start sharply. Do not rev the

engine at full throttle.

- Never drive for long distances or on normal, solid

roads with the differentials locked.

- When the crane is driven with the independent rear

axle steering engaged, the differential locks must
n e v e r be engaged.

11.2 Overall Level Adjustment

In order to drive the mobile crane in transport condition (site or

road travel), all the suspension cylinders must be in the middle
position.

If the suspension is defect, the level on the suspension

cylinders can be measured.

The distance between the mounting eyes of the suspension

cylinders (1) is thereby X = 630 mm. This value represents the
average value of the individual hydraulic circuits I, II and III.
(Z 155 087)

Adjust the hydraulic suspension as follows:

(Z 501 030)

1. Position the crane on even and level ground and apply the
parking brake to prevent rolling (14).

2. Start the engine (if needed increase the revs), (gear lever
(8) in position „N“)

3. When dual button (42, S 308) is pressed, the crane is

automatically levelled. The indicator lights (83, H 312);

11.3 Checking the Hydraulic Suspension

11.3.1 Monitoring the Pressure

(Z 501 031)

Three pressure gauges are provided in the driver's cab for the
continuous monitoring of the pressure in the hydraulic
suspension system.

They are assigned to the suspension circuits as follows:

- Pressure gauge (5): Circuit I Axle 1, left and right

- Pressure gauge (6): Circuit II Axles 2 and 3 - left
- Pressure gauge (7): Circuit III Axles 2 and 3 - right

The specified value for the suspension system pressure can be

determined exactly after adjusting the level of the suspension
cylinders. With an axle load of 12 t, the pressure in the
suspension system is in the order of approx. 105 bar (average
value) and may be different for each suspension circuit.

When the suspension system is switched to road travel, the

suspension pressure may rise on one side of the vehile and fall
on the other side when the vehicle is driven through a curve.

If the suspension circuit pressure drops suddenly and/or

the level changes noticeably during road travel, this
indicates a potentially dangerous malfunction. In this case,
the mobile crane must be stopped immediately and the
cause of the malfunction determined and eliminated.

11.4 Lock the Suspension (Travel Operation)

The hydraulic suspension system must be locked for "driving

the crane on the construction site in configured condition".

- Superstructure must be locked at 180o to the rear.

- The hydraulic suspension must not be locked when the
crane is driven in transport condition. In this instance,
locked suspension would lead to extensive damage to
the crane chassis.
- As long as the crane is in the "mobile" operating
condition, independent rear axle steering may not be
engaged.
- The hydraulic suspension system must be fully locked
for "driving the crane on the construction site with load
attached".

11.4.1 Engaging Procedure

(Z 170 737)

1. Support the crane on the outriggers (see Section 12).

2. Actuate toggle switches (39, 40, 41) or (42) until the

suspension cylinders are fully retracted (suspension
blocked, axles fully raised).

3. Lock the suspension by pressing switch (121, S 326).

4. Retract the outrigger cylinders slowly and evenly (see

Section 12) until the outrigger pads are located just above
the ground.

If the crane is in a slanting position, extend the outrigger

cylinders again and support the crane on the outriggres.

Hydraulic Suspension 11

The suspension level may not be adjusted when the crane

is in the "mobile" or configured condition. The hydraulic
pressure levels must be continually monitored. If the
pressure in one of the suspension circuits rises above 300
bar, the crane must be stopped immediately and supported
on the outriggers. The hydraulic suspension must be reset
and the crane levelled by correcting the position of the
outriggers. If the hydraulic suspension setting is not
corrected, the crane is in danger of tipping or the axles in
danger of breaking.

11.4.2 Disengaging Procedure

(Z 170 738)

1. Extend the outrigger cylinders and support the crane on the

outriggers (see Section 12)

2. Engage the hydraulic suspension again by pressing switch

11.5 Height Adjustment

The level of the 3 suspension circuits can be individually

adjusted. This can always be useful, e.g:

- If the headroom is not sufficient for the crane;

- If more ground clearance is required;
- If the mobile crane is stuck during off-road operation;
- Before retracting the outriggers.

When adjusting the height, always leave a small distance to

upper or lower stop position of the suspension cylinders so
that the suspension still has a minimum effect in reserve.

To avoid extensive damage, the crane may only be driven

short distances in this condition.

Individual height adjustment can be carried out as follows:

(Z 170 739)

- Press push-button (39, S 305):

“Raise and lower at front”
(“Suspension circuit I - raise and lower”
or “Axle 1 left and right - raise and lower”)

- Press push-button (40, S 306):

“Raise and lower level at rear left right-hand side”
(“Suspension circuit II - raise and lower”
or “Axles 2 and 3 left - raise and lower”)

- Press push-button (41, S 307):

“Raise and lower level at rear right -hand side”
(“Suspension circuit III - raise and lower”
or “Axles 2 and 3 right - raise and lower”).

Drive extremely carefully and then set the level back to

"Road travel" immediately.
(See Section 11.2).

After any special adjustment, the hydraulic suspension

must be set back to transport position for driving.
(See Section 11.2).

11.6 Raising the Axles

The axles must be raised after the crane has been supported
on the outriggers (see also Section 12).

Before raising the axles, switch (122, S 327; „hold axles“,

Z 170 740) must be actuated.

The axles are raised by pressing buttons (4, S 360.1 or S

360.2) in the switch boxes on the left and right of the crane
chassis (Z 170 532).

When resetting the switch (122, S 327, Z 170 740) in the

supported condition, the axles sink under their own weight.

After any special adjustment, the hydraulic suspension

must be set back to transport position for driving (see

12.1 Instructions for Supporting the Crane on the Outrig-

gers

The following instructions must be observed in order to

guarantee that the supported crane is perfectly stable.

For technical safety reasons, the outriggers can only be

extended on the side on which the corresponding control
panel is located. The crane operator can thus only extend
the outriggers which he can constantly observe.
The two control panels must always remain closed. A
control panel may be opened only when it is to be
operated (only use one at a time).
Both control panels must be closed immediately after the
crane has been supported on outriggers and levelled.

- The outriggers must be extended before starting any

crane operation. The outriggers should generally be
extended to the maximum support area of 6.85 x 6.4 m.
- Leave the main boom in longitudinal direction before
the outriggers are extended.
- The superstructure may only be turned when the crane
is supported on the outriggers.
- Always extend the outriggers before attaching the load
to the crane hook.
- Always extend the outriggers to the corresponding
colour mark.
- The supports need some room for lateral adjustment
while the outriggers are being extended.
- The axles must be raised after the crane has been
supported on outtriggers.
o
- The crane must be levelled in all directions (360 ).
- Ensure flat ground with adequate load-bearing capacity
for positioning of the supports! (See Section 12.5)
The maximum soil pressure is approx. 280 t/m2.
Depending on the load bearing capacity of the ground,
the soil pressure must be reduced by using solid
support plates.

12.3 Before Extending the Outriggers

(Z 501 032)

1. The crane superstructure must not be turned before the

outriggers have been extended.

2. Engage the parking brake (14) to prevent the vehicle rolling

away.

When extending the outriggers with the crane facing

downhill in the logitudinal direction, the axle which is to be
raised last must be supported with chocks to prevent the
crane from rolling.

3. Place the transmission in neutral „N“ using gear lever (8).

4. Start the vehicle engine (see Section 5).

12.4 Procedure for Extending the Outriggers

Proceed as described below once you are convinced that no

obstacles or persons are within the outrigger extension range
and that all the notes on dangerous situations given in Section
12.1 have been observed.

12.4.1 Extending the Outriggers

(Support Area 4.4 m x 6.85 m and 6.4 m x 6.85 m)

1. Pull the retainer lock down (1, Z 170 887) and place the
outrigger plate in the support position.

Crushing may occur.

Before extending the outriggers, ensure that no persons
are within the danger area of the outriggers to be extended
horizontally.

Before the axles are raised, switch (122, S 327; „hold axles“)
must be actuated.

3. To extend the outrigger struts to the corresponding

outrigger support area, press button (3, S 505) or (5, S 507)
in the control panel on the left-hand side (or (3, S 504) or
(5, S 506) in the control panel on the right-hand side).

4. To extend the outrigger cylinders, press button (2 (7), S

503 (S 502)), (6 (1), S 509 (S508)), (1 (6), S 501 (S 500))
or (7 (2), S 511 (S 510)) in the control panel on the left or
right-hand side.

5. Extend each outrigger cylinder individually until all outrigger

plates are touching the ground.

6. Continue to extend the outrigger cylinders until all the axles

are relieved of weight and the crane is practically level.

7. Press button (4, S 360.1/2) and “raise axles” (completely).

The engine speed is automatically increased when the

outrigger controls are operated.

The outrigger struts can only be extended on the side which

can be observed by the crane operator from his position at the
control panel. If the crane is clearly standing at an angle, this
must be corrected by continuing to extend the corresponding
outrigger cylinders. Ensure, however, that the outrigger
cylinders have sufficient extension stroke for subsequent
levelling.

8. Extend or retract the outrigger cylinders further and level

the crane to a maximum tilt of 0.1o.

Use the straight position indicator (8) for checking that the
crane is level.
When the crane has been levelled, the bubble in the spirit
level must not pass the 0o ring by more than 1 mm.

9. After every new configuration of the crane, the set level

must be checked again.

10. Check the set level once again.

If the transversal bar has come out of alignment, levelling must

be repeated.

1. Adjust the rear transversal bar so that it is level.

2. Retract the front outrigger cylinders slightly and then adjust

the longitudinal bar level by extending the front outrigger
cylinders again.

The symbols on the buttons indicate their use.

To level the crane correctly, all outrigger cylinders must be

finely adjusted from the control panel on one side of the
crane. (In this case proceed with particular caution when
the outrigger cylinders are actuated which cannot be
observed directly).

Close the switch panel immediately upon completion of

the adjustments.

To avoid the risk of crushing:

- First extend the outrigger cylinders on each side until

the outrigger plates are in contact with the ground.
- Only then can exact levelling take place, with all
outrigger cylinders being controlled from one side of
the crane.

12.4.2 Retracting the Outriggers

(for Driving the Crane in Transport Condition)

1. Move the boom to transport condition.

2. Make shure that the parking brake in the crane chassis cab
is actuated.

When retracting the outrigger cylinders with the crane

facing downhill in the longitudinal direction, chocks
should be placed underneath the axle which first has
ground contact to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

(Z 170 532)
3. Press button 1 (S 501), 2 (S 503), 6 (S 509) or 7 (S 511) on
the left-hand side or 1 (S 508), 2 (S 510), 6 (S 500) or 7 (S
502) on the right-hand side and hold until the outrigger
cylinders have been fully retracted individually.

4. Press button (3, S 505) or (5, S 507) on the left-hand side

and (3, S 504) or (5, S 506) on the right-hand side and hold
until the outrigger struts have been fully retracted
individually.

5. Pull the retainer pin (1) from the outrigger plates and push
the plate into the driving configuration. Allow the retainer
lock (1) to lock in position again. (Z 501 047)

6. Switch back switch (122, S 327) and level all axles

(Z 170 740) (see section 11.1).

When switch (122, S 327 is switched back, the axles sink under
their own weight when the crane is supported on outriggers.

12.4.3 Retracting the Outriggers

(for driving the Crane in Configured Condition)

See also Section 11.2 "Engaging suspension lock"

Before lowering the crane onto the wheels, always check

which values with regard to configuration, counterweight,
superstructure position, boom length and boom angle are
permissible (see Section 6 "Driving the Mobile Crane in
Configured Condition ).

The outriggers should as a rule be operated and adjusted

using the controls on the crane chassis.
The outriggers may only be driven from the superstructure cab
if the crane is set for superstructure operation, and only in
exceptional cases (see Section 6).
At the same time, take care that the only outriggers driven are
those which the crane operator can see clearly, either directly
or via a mirror. (If necessary position a spotter).

12.5 Permissible Ground Pressures

The following values for the load bearing capacity of various
soil types are stated in DIN 1054.

If there are any doubts regarding the load capacity of the

ground where the crane is to be situated, an inspection of
the ground must be carried out.

Soil type p(kg/cm2)

A) Backfilled soils, not artificially compressed

0-1

B) Clearly uncultivated natural soils

1. Mud, peat, marshy soil 0

2. Non-cohesive soils, evenly and firmly

layered:
- Fine to medium grain sand 1.5
- Course sand to gravel 2.0

3. Cohesive soils
- pulpy 0.0
- soft 0.4
- rigid 1.0
- semi-solid 2.0
- solid 4.0

4. Rock surface with small fissures in

good, non-weathered condition and in
decent location:
- of closed bed secession 15.0
- of massive and columnar secession 30.0
Example (Z 155 257):
For non-cohesive fine-grain soils (p=1.5 kg/cm²), the values
should be taken from the adjacent diagram:
If p=1.5 kg/cm², the values from curve 3 are to be taken.
(see table) With a maximum outrigger force of (Fs=36 t) the
required surface area for the outrigger plate is (As=2.4 m²). The
standard outrigger plate supplied has a diameter of
500 mm, giving an outrigger support area of 0.2 m2 (2000cm2).
With an outrigger force of (Fs=27 t) a surface area of (As=1.8
Date: 40.CW/00

m²) is required for the outrigger plate. This surface area can be
produced by using suitable underlay plates (e.g. wooden
planks etc.)
(Outrigger forces are to be taken from the load tables.)

12.5.1 Safety Distances from Slopes and Ditches

(Z 170 688)

The crane must be erected a safe distance from slopes or

ditches. The necessary distance from slopes and ditches
which are not re-inforced also depends on the soil type.

The clearance from the edge of the ditch/slope (X) must

equal at least 2 m.

As a general rule the following applies:

- For loose or backfilled soils the safety distance (a) must be

twice the size of the ditch depth (b)
The angle of the slope α must equal < 30o.

- for natural, firm soils the safety distance (a) must be as

large as the ditch depth (b).
The angle of the slope α must equal <45o.

The safety distance is measured from the foot of the ditch (C).

Parking 13

13 Parking

To park the crane apply the parking brake, see section 8.

When parking the crane do not allow the wheels to drive onto
the kerb as this would result in damage to the tyres and/or
steering components.
In addition, a parked vehicle must be secured by at least one
chock to prevent rolling. It is a statutory regulation to have
chocks available and ready to use! In darkness the vehicle
must be parked with the parking lights on on public roads. In
enclosed localities, the crane can also be marked off with
reflective night parking boards. The statutory requirements
must be met.

Before leaving the crane, it must be parked in a safe way so

that no accidents can occur.
Always observe the following points:

13.1 Leaving the Vehicle in Transport Condition

1. Apply the parking brake of the crane chassis.

If the crane has to be parked on a slope, additionally

block the wheels with wheel chocks.

2. The main boom head must be lashed to the basic boom

with the retaining rope (see section 6, Z 155 106).

3. Place the transmission in neutral.

4. Stop the engine.

5. Switch off the ignition.

When the engine is switched off the transmission must be

in neutral.
Date: 40.CW/00

e50_1-2130 1/2

6. Switch off the heater, if necessary (if standstill heating

system is independent of the chassis).

7. Lock the driver's cab and crane operator's cab.

13.2 Leaving the Crane in Configured Condition and with

Outriggers Extended

1. Lower the crane load to the ground and remove from

the hook ( whenever the crane operator leaves the
crane cab).

2. Apply the slew gear brake (see operating instructions

for the crane superstructure 8.2).

3. Retract telescopes.

4. Stop the engine.

5. Switch off the heater, if necessary.

6. Lock the driver's cab and crane operator's cab.

Observe the permitted wind speeds. If necessary, the

boom or the equipment must be lowered.

Towing the Crane and Towing the Crane to Start 14

14.1 Towing the Crane to Start

The engine cannot be started by towing. If the engine does not

fire during starting because the battery is partially or completely
discharged, the engine may be started using a jump lead from
the battery of another vehicle (24 V-system).

14.2 General Towing Regulations

The conditions listed in the section 14.2.1 must be observed.

They serve to make the crane safer and prevent further
damage.

It is entirely the responsibility of the crane owner or the

recovery service commissioned by him to tow the mobile
crane.
The towing procedure is an exceptional situation, which
entails an increased risk.

If it is possible to repair the crane at the respective site, it

may not be towed away. The crane may be towed only to
the nearest workshop which can be reached. For
questions reagarding this matter, please refer to our
customer service in Zweibrücken.

In addition to the regulations listed below the respective

statutory national regulations, in particular those
concerning traffic are to be observed.

Towing the Crane and Towing the Crane to Start 14

14.2.1 Towing the Crane in Case of:

- Engine damage

The crane may be towed at a maximum speed of 10 km/h and

for a maximum distance of 10 km.

- Transmission damage

If the crane needs to be towed further than 10 km, the drive

shafts between the transmission and axle 1 and between the
transmission and axle 2 must be removed.

Condition: The engine must be fully functional as otherwise the

emergency steering pump will not be working.

To ensure that the road and operational safety of the

vehicle is not endangered, this work may only be
performed by trained specialist personnel.

General points to be observed when towing:

1. The driver of the towing vehicle must be able to

communicate with the driver of the vehicle being towed.

2. When towing the crane away, only a permitted tow bar may
be used (no. of axles x 12 t).

3. Avoid causing any oblique pull during the towing operation.

The hydraulic steering operates at a reduced output

(dependent on the speed) and is supplied with hydraulic
oil during the towing procedure by the emergency steering
pump attached to the distributor gear. This means:
- The steering times (time required to engage full left or
right-hand lock from forward steering position) for the
vehicle being towed are approx. 3 to 4 times longer
than those of the towing vehicle.
- When negotiating tight corners, a certain amount of
manoeuvring may e required.
- Considerably more effort is required to turn the
steering wheel.

Stand: 40.KW/00

4/7 e50_1-2140
Towing the Crane and Towing the Crane to Start 14

4. The braking system and the traction power of the towing

vehicle must be sufficient to perform this task.

5. The spring accumulators - brake cylinders may not be

locked mechanically.

6. The compressed air for the brakes on the defective vehicle

must be fed into the braking system upstream of the four
circuit safety valve of the defective vehicle via a hose line
from the towing vehicle. Air is fed from the outside into the
air system on the left hand side of the vehicle.
(Connection M 22 x 1,5)

Stop the vehicle immediately if:

- The indicator light for the emergency steering pump

comes on during towing.

- The air pressure in the supply tanks has dropped

below 5 bar and the corresponding indicator light
comes on.

If the drive motor can be left running when the crane is towed
with defective automatic transmission, point 6 and the
reference to the reduced output of the hydraulic steering do not
apply. In this instance the speed of the chassis motor is to be
set to approx. 1200 rpm using the manual control.

14.3 Towing the Crane Free on Soft Ground

Towing of the stuck vehicle where the wheels have dug into the
loose or soft ground must be performed with great care,
particularly if the crane superstructure is in configured
condition.

Pulling out in the direction of travel is not permitted. The ring in

the front bumper brace is only intended for towing the vehicle
on solid ground.

Pull the crane out backwards in a straight line in the track it had
previously made via the rear trailer hitch or with long steel
ropes attached to the rear outrigger housings. Pulling out
jerkily and pulling out at an angle is not permitted as otherwise
chassis damage may occur.

If it is not possible to tow the crane out in a straight line, a

deflection point between crane and towing vehicle may be
arranged. Ensure that the air pressure in the brake system is
sufficient.

15.1 Generalnotes
The chassis cab is equipped with a hot−water heater that is
dependent on the coolant temperature of the chassis engine.
Optionally, the chassis can be equipped with an
engine−independent radiator preheater.
With the help of this radiator preheater, the chassis cab can be
heated with the chassis engine at a standstill.
In addition, the coolant can be preheated before the engine is
started.
At low ambient temperatures (up to −20 °C ( −4 °F)) the coolant
preheating makes it easier to start the engine.
Below −20 °C ( −4 °F) the coolant must be preheated.

This heating is dependent on the coolant temperature of the

engine.

When the cooling water is warm, the temperature in the driver’s

cab can be regulated using rotary knob (155).

Using the rotary switch (154) a fan can additionally be activated

to allow air to be circulated around the driver’s cab more quickly
and/or to continue to feed warm air into the cab when the crane
is at a standstill.

Using the knob (157) the airflow can be switched to “front

window” or ”driver’s cab”.

Using control knob (153) an air flap can be set to fresh air or
ventilate.

15.3 Engine−independent heating with radiator preheater

(optional)

In addition, observe the operating instructions of the

manufacturer in part 5 of this documentation.
These are much more detailed and cover additional areas
(for example fitting, safety devices etc.).

The mobile crane is optionally equipped with an

engine−independent radiator preheater for the chassis engine.
At low outside temperatures of up to −20°C ( −4 °F) it facilitates
starting the engine.
Below −20°C ( −4 °F) the coolant must be preheated. To operate
the system there is a timer in the crane operator’s cab (109).

The heater may only be used for the purpose specified by the
manufacturer, and all operating instructions supplied must
be observed.
Operation is not permitted:
− where flammable fumes or dust can be produced
(i.e. near fuel, coal dust, wood dust, wheat depots, or
similar places)
− in enclosed spaces (e.g. garages) due to
the risk of poisoning.
− when refuelling.

When carrying out electric welding work on the vehicle, the

positive terminal must be disconnected from the battery to
protect the control unit and connected to the ground.

If the coolant has been replaced, or if large quantities of

coolant have been added, before switching on the
engine−independent heater − the engine must be set to an
operating temperature of approx. 805C (1765F) ( = opening
point coolant thermostat). The coolant circuit and the circuit
for the engine−independent heater assembly can then be
vented automatically.

The coolant that has been preheated by the heater assembly can
be used to preheat the cab and/or engine.
First, up to a coolant temperature of approx. 45 °C (113 °F), the
heat of the auxiliary heating system is directed only into the
driver’s cab = small circuit = rapid heating.
If the coolant temperature continues to rise, the
thermostat gradually switches over (fully switched at 60 °C
(140 °F)) to the large circuit = additional engine preheating.

15.3.1 Operating modes

(Z 54 856)
− Cab and engine preheating via preset time

Set heating thermostat (rotary knob 155) to the desired

temperature and use the timer (160) to program the start of the
heating.

Once a certain coolant temperature has been reached, the fan

automatically starts at the level set by the rotary knob (154).
Rotary knob (154) must be set to maximum position.
− engine preheating only via preset time

Set heating thermostat (rotary knob 155) to the desired

temperature, position 0, and use the timer (160) to program the
start of the heating.

15.4 Air Conditioning Equipment, Standard, Optional

Equipment
(Z 54 856)

The air conditioning equipment works with the coolant R 134a

and therefore contains no ozone−destructive CFCs.
To operate the air conditioning, there are two rotary switches.
1. AC switch (158) (on/off)
2. Blower switch (154)
The air conditioning equipment only works when the engine is
running.
The air conditioning equipment is out of operation when the air
conditioning switch (158) is switched off.
If you want to switch on the air conditioning equipment, you must
set the blower switch (154) to at least position 1 by turning
clockwise. With the temperature selection knob (155) you can
now select the cooling temperature. By turning the knob in the
clockwise direction, the output of the air conditioning equipment
is increased; the room temperature in the cab falls.
The higher the cooling output of the air conditioning as set with
the temperature switch, the higher the fan setting should be
selected.
If the cooling output of the air conditioning equipment is
noticeably lower with the setpoint value unchanged and the fan
setting lower, it is possible that the vaporiser has iced up. In this
case, switch off the air conditioning equipment − with the
vaporiser fan running − for approx. 3 minutes. The ice on the
vaporiser will now thaw.
To achieve the highest level of cooling in the cab, the
− temperature selection knob must be turned in the clockwise
direction up to the stop.
− the highest fan setting selected
− the heating switched off
− the window closed
On damp days the air conditioning unit can dehumidify the cab
air. With the vehicle heating the cooling effect is compensated for.
This then achieves a pleasant cab climate and prevents windows
fogging up.
The air−conditioning must be switched on at least once a month
for a brief period. This is necessary to lubricate the compressor.

For maintenance of the air conditioning equipment, see

“Maintenance and lubrication instructions”.

15.5 Auxiliary AC system (optional)

(Z 54 856, Z 56 153)

For special climate situations the cab can be equipped with an

additional AC system.
The housing (205) is then fitted in the cab.
The air conditioning equipment works like the standard AC only
when the engine is running and the fan switched on. The air
conditioning works permanently with maximum power.
To operate the air conditioning, proceed as follows:

1. Set switch (205.1) to the desired fan level.

2. Press luminous switch (158); the indicator light in the switch

lights up.

The auxiliary AC is then switched on with the same switch (158)

as the standard AC.
Whether and how the standard and auxiliary AC systems provide
cool air depends on the position of the fan switch.
When the fan is switched off, the corresponding AC does not
provide a cooling function.

To achieve the highest level of cooling in the cab:

− Set the fan to the highest level using switch (154) and (205.1)
− Turn the switch (155) fully to the left (anti−clockwise) up to the
stop
− Open the vent nozzles in the cab and housing (205) of the
auxiliary AC system completely
− Press the switch (153) for circulation air mode
− Close the windows and doors in the cab.

The instructions for operating the AC system in section 15.4

apply in the same way.

15.6 Liquid gas heating (optional)

(Z 27 544)

Heating

Proceed as follows to switch on the heating:

1. If fitted, remove the flue cap.

2. Open the bottle valve and quick−action stop valve in the gas
line.

3. Set the desired room temperature at the control knob (4) of

the operating panel.

4. Set the switch (3) to “heat” (position “A”) and set switch (2)
to the desired output (“FULL, large flame” or “1/2, small
flame”). At low ambient temperatures start the heating at
“FULL”.

Ventilation

Proceed as follows to switch on the fan:

1. Set switch (3) to “ventilation” (position “C“).

2. Set the switch (2) to the desired air output (“FULL” or “1/2”).

If the switch (3) is in position “B”, the system is switched off.

Notes on heating operation

(Z 27 544)

If the switch (3) is set to “heat” (position “A”) or “ventilation”

(position “C”), the green control lamp under the rotary knob (4)
must light up. The fan is in operation.
If the control lamp is not illuminated, the fuse in the electronic
control unit must be replaced (see maintenance and lubrication
instructions).

If the heating is switched off after a heating phase, the green light
means that the fan is still running to use up the residual heat. The
ignition switch may therefore only be switched off once the fan
has come to a standstill.

When refuelling and in enclosed spaces (garage, etc.) the

heating may not be operated.

Uninterrupted display of the red control lamp (1) can, amongst

other things, point to a lack of gas, air in the gas line, heavily
clogged blower or malfunction in one of the safety units.
The fault is deactivated by switching the heating off and on again.

Flashing of the red indicator lamp (1) points to low operating

voltage for the heater.

Make sure that the flue for the exhaust and combustion air is
always free of dirt and obstructions (sludge, foliage etc.).

The cap for the flue should always be fitted when the heating is
not in use.

For operation and servicing of your heater, see also the operating
instructions of the manufacturer in part 5.

Before carrying out any welding work, the corresponding

automatic breaker must be switched off.
