As the job opportunity is increasing limited on the land, more and more young man are turning to
the sea for a living. Some of them choose to work on a ship only after they have failed to get a job.
However, many young men actually would rather work on the sea than on land. In my opinion,
there are several reasons that account for increasing interest in pursuing maritime professions.

Firstly, our country is made up of many lands. We are surrounded by water. It is not surprising
that many people have grown to love the sea. In order to be able to spend more time near the sea,
they decide to work on it. Many of them spend their whole lives on the water.

Secondly, the many school dropouts in the country as well as those young men who have just
finished their education in school are looking for jobs at the same time. Competition for jobs is
therefore great. Many fail to get work in office or factories, so these people turn to the sea as a last
resort.

Thirdly, some young men face problem at home. They want to get as far away from these problems
as possible. The sea becomes a popular means of escape.

Finally, young people are naturally advantageous. They love to explore new places. They enjoy
the excitement that comes with this. By working on a ship, they are able to travel far and wide.
Besides, food and lodging on board the ship are free. Thus, many young men are attracted to
maritime profession.

From the text we know that…

a. many young men prefer to work on sea rather than on

land b. there are more job opportunities on sea than on land

c. all young men working on sea are school

dropouts d. there is no advantage from working on

sea

e. all young men are attracted to maritime profession

c. Problems faced by young men working as a

seaman d. Adventurous reason for young men to be

a seaman e. Advantages of working on sea over land

41. W hy They Turn to the Sea?

As the job opportunity is increasing limited on the land, more and more young man are turning to
the sea for a living. Some of them choose to work on a ship only after they have failed to get a job.
However, many young men actually would rather work on the sea than on land. In my opinion, there
are several reasons that account for increasing interest in pursuing maritime professions.

Firstly, our country is made up of many lands. W e are surrounded by water. It is not surprising that
many people have grown to love the sea. In order to be able to spend more time near the sea, they
decide to work on it.

They enjoy the
excitement that comes with this. By working on a ship, they are able to travel far and wide. Besides,
food and lodging on board the ship are free. Thus, many young men are attracted to maritime
profession.

W hich of the following statement is true based on the passage, EXCEPT?

a. some young men work on sea after being failed getting a job on
land

b. many young men decide to be a seaman because our country isn’t surrounded by

water c. working as a seamen make us able to travel some other countries

d. number of young man tuning to working on sea is

increasing e. there are more and more young men working as

seamen.

42. Japanese Traditional House

The Japanese traditional house made of wood is expected to last about twenty years before
having to be repaired or rebuilt. Each year it is depreciated.

The interior design is what really sets the Japanese traditional house. W ith the exception of the entry
way (genkan), the kitchen (dadikoro), the bathing room (sento), and the toilet (benjo), the rooms in a
Japanese traditional house does not have a designated use.

A room can easily be a living room area, a bedroom, a dining room, or any combination. Large rooms
are partitioned by fusuna, sliding doors made wood and thick paper. The paper used for fusuma is
called washi. These sliding doors can be removed whenever a larger space is needed.

In large traditional houses, there was one large room, or lima (living space) that could be divided as
needed. The smaller rooms like kitchen, bath and toilet were small extensions to one side. Rouka, or
wooden-floored hallways, follow the edge of the home. W indows are made of wood and shoji paper,
which is thin enough to let the light shine through.

Even Japanese houses tend to have one traditional Japanese room, called a washitsu. This room has
tatami
mats on the floors as used in Japanese traditional houses. Tatami are thick straw mats covered with
stitched, woven rushes. Tatami are smooth and firm enough to walk on, while making a sleeping
surface more comfortable than wood or stone.

The genkan is usually a step below the level of the rest of the house. W hen people enter the home,
they leave their shoes in the genkan, pointed toward the door so they only need to slip them on when
they are ready to go out. Indoor slippers are often worn inside the house.

The kitchen in most traditional Japanese homes will contain a stove with a very small oven and boiler
and an electric refrigerator. Counter space for food preparation and a sink are also located in the
kitchen.

From the text, which statement is correct...

a. Japanese traditional house is never renovated

b. W ashitsu can’t be found in modern japanese house

c. Genkan contains a stove with a very small oven and a

Java, are polluted by trash, dumping 21 tons of waste daily into Jakarta Bay, a researcher has calculated.
The seven rivers include the Angke, Sentiong, Sunter, Cilincing and Marunda. Meanwhile, the two
rivers in the satellite cities that flow into Jakarta Bay include the Dadap in Tangerang and Bekasi in
Bekasi.
"Of the seven rivers in Jakarta, one river in Bekasi and one river in Tangerang, the total waste
that enters Jakarta Bay is 21 tons daily," said Reza Cordova, a sea chemical and ecotoxicology
researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Science’s (LIPI) oceanographic research center.
According to Reza, most trash that flows into Jakarta Bay comes from Jakarta's sister cities
because the trash management in Jakarta's rivers is well-managed.
"W aste in Jakarta is relatively less severe than those of Tangerang and Bekasi because there
is a possibility that waste management in Jakarta is one of the best," Reza said as quoted by
wartakota.tribunnews.com on Monday.
Reza added that the work of Jakarta's Public Facility Maintenance Agency (PPSU) personnel,
popularly known as the "orange troops", contributed to the better waste management of rivers in
Jakarta
"On average there is less that 1 ton of trash per day. In Tangerang and Bekasi, the trash can
reach up to 7-8 tons per day," he said.
The trash that goes into Jakarta Bay consists of wood, glass and mostly single-use plastic. (mai)
