Why not?

From the moment I had a clear understanding of the decisions I came up with, and people
suddenly ask why did I arrived at such decision, my answer would simply be, Why not? The world
itself gives us endless possibilities, in a blink of an eye, fortune may favor or destruct your way,
with that being said one should decide precisely on things that will determine their future whether
it will or it won’t make them happy. By the age of seven I am decided to pursue a degree on
medicine and someday I’ll be curing the diseases of my grandparents. By the age of twelve,
through browsing the internet, I’ve got interested on being an aeronautical engineer. Up until know
I am thinking of being a nurse, an attorney or even a politician someday, despite such headscratcher
moment of thinking on what profession I should pursue, I came up with a decision of becoming a
Civil Engineer someday mainly because of 5 reasons. In order to become a Civil Engineer
someday, the 5 reasons I’ll be mentioning are also the reasons why I took up BS Civil Engineering.

First, out of all the courses I have in my mind, Civil Engineering is the most practical of
them all, why? Then come to think of this. The pandemic we are facing opened our eyes to the
vital role our front liners are contributing to this society. Most doctors and nurse almost work 24/7
in order to control the cases and eventually find cure for COVID-19. Considering the fact that it
brings harm, makes me think of taking up another course. One more thing, admit it or not, it would
take another 100 more years in order for our country to be considered as a 2nd world or even a 1st
world country. The amount of money and time in order to be a doctor doesn’t sound practical for
me, especially as a student who does not like memorizing facts or terminologies which is vital in
the medicinal field. Another thing, as I grew up my parents always mentioned that they do not see
us to be attorneys or politician somedays, due to the fact of the widespread of corruption and the
ability of an attorney to defend those people who are apparently wrong. Second, ever since I was
in elementary I found myself being somehow inclined into mathematics and numbers, though, I
am really not good at it, acquiring low scores on my past exams at calculus and physics makes me
somehow motivated and further enjoy the course I am taking. Way back when I was on my 5th
grade a teacher of mine mentioned that there is a no need to be in fear of numbers because we are
humans and apparently humans created numbers. With that ideology I somehow started embracing
Math subjects though I continuously fail at certain subjects but still for me it is a thing to be enjoyed
and be excited of. Third, I’ve always dreamed of being rich. Rich in many different ways, first I
dreamed of designing my very own three storey house which have a swimming pool on it and a 5
car garage. This reason might somehow be childish, but dreaming of this and wanting this
considerably temporary things makes me eager to strive and work for more. Nevertheless, Civil
Engineering for me is the most practical course in order to so, I’ve seen testimonies and heard
stories of individuals being successful through this certain field and someday somehow I wish to
become like them. But I do not want to be an ordinary rich and successful individual someday, all
I want is to be a simple man with a pure heart. I’ve been dreaming of also building houses for
people who does not have the capability or who does not afford to have their own houses. I am
also an individual who dreams of a better Philippines and a better world someday, residential
houses for 100 families for free would be my true definition of success. Those residential houses
would be my design, the drainage system and the roads shall also be my designs and all of which
are only possible if I pursue BS Civil Engineering.

The last two reasons are somehow the true reasons why I do want to be a Civil Engineer
someday. For the past 13 years our family owned a hardware, when I was kid I’d play unto the
different things my parents are selling. The scent and sight of cement, hollow blocks, gavel, and
sand isn’t new to me, and as I grew up I further want to be familiar with them and continuously

create improvement and changes in the construction field. I’ve seen my parent go up and down,
face different problems, and celebrated success in this certain industry, and as a son I myself
proudly says, I want to continue and improve the legacy they started. With that being said, and at
this early age me and my sibling have dreamed of nut just continuing the hardware our parents
started but somehow someday create a well-known construction and contracting company. The
construction scene had fed up and enable us to go to school for years, hence, as a dreaming Civil
Engineer I also want to create dreams for my future son and daughter through this certain industry.
And lastly, a far different world and an improved country through different sectors specifically
through Civil Engineering is what I dreamed of and one of the best reason I pursued BS Civil
Engineering. Create and design wonders, not just simple buildings, bridges, and houses, but create
wonders that will help create a far different world compare to what we are living right now.

Five simple reasons, those are the reasons why I chose and pursued BS Civil Engineering.
Nevertheless, once the time had come I accomplished and gave justice to the reasons I’ve
mentioned, thanks be to God is the only righteous thing to do. After all it is his life not ours, his
dreams not ours, and his profession not ours. Why did I choose BS Civil Engineering? Because,
why not? Let us all live this world full of endless possibilities and gear out ourselves on achieving
its goals and dreams, after all doing such enabled us not to regret anything.
