Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple or more known as Pura Besakih is a Pura/Temple complex that is located in the feet
of mount Agung that is the most tallest mountain in Bali, more precisely the Temple is located in Jalan Gunung
Mas, Balinese district of Karangasem.
The exact origin of the Temple Complex is still unknown although the many structures in the Temple
complex looks similar to pyramidic shaped structures that date back to 2000 years ago. Based from Scriptures from
Balinese old writings, the first known mention of this Temple dates back to the year 1284. During that time, Besakih
Temple was used for a Place of worship by the Gelgel dynasty.
The Temple Complex Consist of many temples placed together so closely, precisely 23 Temples and
the biggest temple which is called “Pura Penataran Agung” most of the architecture in the Temple complex dates
back to the 15th Century.
During the 1960s eruption of Mount Agung, The Temple miraculously didn’t get damaged by the
eruption and the lava from the eruption missed the temple by meters. The Balinese later came to believe it was of
gods will and they basically believed god was teaching them a lesson but also not damaging sacred buildings.
Every year, Besakih Temple holds a big yearly ceremony that’s based on the Pakuwon Calendar or
more known as the Balinese Calendar. It attracts many Balinese Hindu especially when its Galungan. There is a
Tradition in Bali called Titra Yadnya where a group of people not only visiting Besakih Temple but also many
temples in Bali in 1 consecutive day.
