THE ZODIAC

INTRODUCTION TO THE SIGNS

The zodiac is the basic component of astrology. The rest of the components are derived from it. In
the West we use the tropical zodiac, which begins with the vernal equinox. That is to say, the sun’s
position around 21st March each year, when day and night are the same length. As we already
mentioned in the previous class, we are going to work with distances, proportions of 30° which
generate qualities and movements, that shape and give life to the process of which they are made
up.

The zodiac consists of 12 stages, phases, and each one of them represents a different time period.
Each zodiacal moment represents a motive, a purpose related to a greater whole formed by the 12
stages. This process is not linear, rather it is circular and each one of the phases is related to the rest
in an organised and harmonious manner. Each phase anticipates the one to come and the following
phase is a product of the previous ones. The signs are not stagnant compartments, rather they are
time periods within a greater process. They are 12 vibrational frequencies which are present in any
type of process in the universe.

The zodiac symbolises the yearly cycle, especially if we take the temperate regions of the Northern
hemisphere, where astrology originated, as a reference. Each stage of the zodiac represents, for
example, a moment in the growth cycle of plant life according to the season (spring, summer,
autumn, and winter). There is a correspondence between the changes experienced by plant life
during the progress of an annual cycle and the emotional and biological changes in the nature of
human beings at each one of these stages. The zodiac demonstrates the human experience of
change, of movement, of the phases that a process is made up of and the interrelations between
these phases.

Studying the zodiac from this perspective allows us to find a key purpose or aim in each sign which
responds to a greater whole. Each stage is necessary so that the cycle can develop biologically and in
harmony. We cannot skip any one of them and the product of one stage incorporates all previous
stages. Each one of these stages contains the rest in a different proportion.

Another important point: each sign can be observed from its most essential vibration (the energy
has little form here) and also at different levels of reality. So, there will be abstract qualities,
psychological manifestations in human beings, as well as more concrete manifestations of energy:
events, people, animals, etc. Different realities which follow the same vibrational pattern.

ZODIACAL POLARITY IN OUR PSYCHES

Energy in its purest and most essential form is neither good nor bad, neither beautiful nor ugly, it
just IS. Moreover, its vibrational quality is necessary as part of a greater whole. When this energy is
expressed in a human being, duality appears. In each manifestation of energy on the plane of
duality, the dynamics of opposites appears, the complementary poles of each thing that exists: light
and dark, day and night, hot and cold. In each one of us, there is a constant search for balance
between these two poles, giving rise to the conscious and the unconscious, to light and dark.

We will study each sign by studying the different levels of the energy’s manifestation, from the most
abstract - pure energy- to the most concrete. That way we will analyse different instances of its
occurrence:

 The purest vibration of the sign: an abstract description of the energy, including the purpose
it has upon manifesting.
 The planet that has the most affinity with the sign, which is called ruling planet.

 The psychology of the sign:

- The corresponding archetype: what anthropomorphised, universal and collective image is
associated with the sign.
- How this energy can manifest in human beings from a psychological point of view:
physically, emotionally and mentally.
- Positive manifestations of the energy (qualities)
- Negative manifestations of the energy (possible difficulties)
 Archetypal activities of the sign
 Correspondence to the human body
 Physiology and illnesses related to the sign
 Everyday situations which exemplify the energy
 Animals associated with the vibration

Each one of these points will be studied in depth during the module, as we go through each of the
signs of the zodiac.
