SECTION B (MARKS 5X4=20)

2. Compute the second moment of area of the channel section shown in figure about
centroidal axis x-x and y-y.

3. Determine the reactions and construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams for
the beam shown in figure. Mark the salient points and the values at those points.

4. A hollow right circular cylinder of radius 800 mm is open at both ends and rests on a smooth
horizontal plane. Inside the cylinder there are two spheres having weights 1 kN and 3 kN and
radii 400 mm and 600 mm, respectively. The lower sphere also rests on the horizontal plane.
Neglecting friction find the minimum weight W of the cylinder for which it will not tip over.

5. A bar of 25 mm diameter is tested in tension. It is observed that when a load of 60kN is applied,
the extension measured over a guage length of 200 mm is 0.12 mm and contraction in diameter is
0.0045 mm. Find Poisson’s ratio and elastic constants E, G, K.
