Introduction
Natural resource management deals with managing the way in which people
and natural landscape interact. it brings together land use planning, water
management, biodiversity conversation and the future sustainability of
industries like agriculture, mining, tourism, fisheries and forestry. (Wikipedia).
Resources are exhausted when it is being utilized quicker than it can recharge
itself. The modern transformation is the point at which everything started. As
our way of life progressed and our species designed numerous things that will
make our lives less demanding, our interest for crude materials expanded
significantly.
No doubt development has positive impacts on our country in one or other way
still, ignoring its negative impacts won't be a worth game.
This research work aims to do finding on the development work carried out in
Mulomulo, Nadi. More specifically, the adverse effect it has on the
environment, infrastructure and the livelihood of the residents in the area.
The project also intends to look at how the relevant authorities involved could
address the negative effects of the development work carried out.

1.0 Description of the Area Mulomulo
Nadi
The area in contemplate is 15 minutes’ drive from the main road and is close to
the Mulomulo secondary school and Mulomulo police post. The houses in
Mulomulo, Nadi are worked close to each other because of less land is
accessible reason for improvement.
8
2.0 Positive Impacts of Development
Some of the positive impacts that are shown as development is taking place are
more job opportunity for people, overall increase in the standard of living and
wellbeing of the people. Development has brought in new factories and building
which has reduced the number of unemployment’s in Mulomulo, Nadi. For
example, the construction of the Nasau Hotel and the Aqua waters, has provided
job to the uneducated people in the area. Jobs such as delivery man, cleaning
boy, housewives and many more. (Questionnaire)
Due to development, living standards has improved. They have more things
such as food, shelter and clothing that can enable them to live longer. Parents
are able to provide their children healthy food and resources to have a healthy
childhood.
9
3.0 Negative Impact of Development
As the project was carried out and observations were made that development in
Mulomulo has more negative impacts than positive impacts. Negative impacts
such as cutting down of trees, soil erosion (landscape) interrelated with road
problems, disturbance in the water supply and infrastructure. All these problems
are related to each other, one lead to another for example, trees are cut down
making the soil to erode, when there is rain which then results to the damage to
the roads.
10
4.0 Environmental Effects of Developments
4.1 Deforestation
Due to development there is constant cutting down of trees for the relocation,
building factories, restaurants, industrial plants, etc. It has no doubt given job
opportunity to the people but also has taken away the greenery from the
community. As a result, more carbon dioxide is released in the atmosphere
along with increase in air pollution. People do not see it now but it is one of the
major contributors towards climate change. When trees are cut down, not only it
increases pollution but also to leads to problems such as less trees to hold the
soil from erosion, difficulty in looking for greenery by the farmers to feed their
animals and many more problems.
11
4.2 Soil Erosion
For the building and factories to be built, land and roads are being graded to
clear the lands and, in this process, roads are being damaged trees are removed
causing the land to erode. When there is heavy raining soil are wasted away
from the road as there is no trees to hold the soil. Great amount of money is also
wasted as there is always a need to repair the road after the damage is made.
12
4.3 Infrastructure
Infrastructure includes power lines, roads, water supply and more. As the roads
are being graded for the development to take place, underground water pipes are
being exposed to the surface. As a result of moving of big truck and van, the
pipes are being damaged and there is running water for about 1 to 2 days. Water
has been wasted in a very big amount and there is no water at homes during the
damage of pipes. Not only water pipes but also the power lines are at risk. Soil
has been removed from the area and the power lines are at a risk of falling
which may cause disaster to happen. People can also be at risk.

and if the development continues this way, the coming generations will face
bigger problems than the current generation.

developments that is taking place in Mulomulo. They explained that even

community. (Questionnaire)
14
Road problems

Increase standards of
living
Health
The pie chart shows that 60% of the respondents have benefit from development
is by getting employment opportunity and 20% have better health and the other
20% have benefits because of development their standard of living has
increased. (Questionnaire)
15
Recommendation
After analyzing the questionnaires from the respondents in Mulomulo, most
resident have put forward the idea that development that is taking place should
be minimized so that the damage that is made can be recovered and further
problems can be prevented. Development can not meet a sudden stop but can
gradually minimize because it is not a totally bad thing as it has brought
changes which being beneficial for the residents of Mulomulo.
16
Conclusion
This research has showed that the development that is taking place in Mulomulo
Nadi has mainly affected the people negatively than positively. Residences of
Mulomulo are having travelling problems because of poor road conditions, also
they are facing difficulty in water supply and soil erosion along with power
lines issues. If development continues on its path like this, it may create bigger
and greater damage and problems for the coming generations
