Creation of Offender Profiles

A criminal profile references a person, a group of people, or an organization in case of

crimes. There are specific steps to follow in making a profile. A profile is an essential document

that helps in carrying out investigations. Some ways provide guidelines for the creation of the

face. The two main ways we will discuss are the bottom-up and geographical ways of coming up

with a crime profile (Kim 2017 p.66). The first way of creating a profile is the bottom-up

approach. It is a psychological way of profiling. It bases its arguments on the psychological

theory and ignores the experience of police forces. It brings out how the daily characteristics are

linked with the way they are conducting their daily lives. It takes into account the fact of

interpersonal consistency and spatial consistency (Impexflowers.com, 2013). The first element

shows how the criminal's treatment of the victim can be the same way he or she approaches

society matters. The other spatial consistency element indicates that the crime always occurs in a

known place, such as a friend's house or a prominent street. This method of creating a profile

works best in the scenarios such as rape and murder. It is one of the best ways of profiling by the

authorities. By following the related elements, one can gradually build up a profile useful for

investigations by the associated authorities.

The second way is geographical profiling. It is one of the best tools that fit well in the

creation of a profile concerning crime. In this situation, the authorities are so familiar with the

analyzing techniques and the tracing of criminal maps. In this technique, the most prominent

areas where the criminal does his or her crimes are first determined. When conducting this kind

of profiling, the main issue is determining the principal place where the offender escapes after

committing the associate crime. It goes through some calculations that can even involve some

mathematics to identify the primary target. This process brings together many theories of

environmental criminology (Sciencedirect.com, 2019). The geographical maps used are usually

colored to indicate places where the crimes have been occurring. Different color indicates a place

where is seen as a hotspot for crime and some information about it is given on the geo-profile

maps. The areas where the crime occurs and the residence of the offender are indicated

differently on the map. This method makes the information and the base of the offender a

priority in the process of profiling (Crimemapping.info, 2016). This technique is usually applied

in cases of serial crimes. This method is used in a wide range of crime investigations by police

and authorities in charge.

Since criminal profiling is a way of making criminal inferences about an individual or a

group of people, it has been used on many occasions. In many of the cases, profiles are used in

investigations of crimes. It helps a lot in laying up the relevant information about the crime

scenes and the offenders themselves. It gives the direction and shape of the criminal cases and

the way they should follow. Profiles play a significant role in the provision of all valuable

information in investigations. Secondly, profiles are useful in situations of cyber patterns. It is

where offenders use internet platforms to conduct their crimes. In this case, profiles help

distinguish whether an offender has been committing multiple mistakes concerning the current

one or a different one. It also helps in accessing the victims and the bases of crime.

On evaluating how profiles have been used in different cases, we will use two case

examples to bring out the meaning and objectives of the profiles. Firstly it is a company that may

be receiving documents from an executive tech. The executive raised concerns about the fact that

someone has accessed confidential information about the company. Focus on the suspects'

behavior, and he led a lot on the tracking of the real criminal (Digitalcommons.law, 2019). The

profile analysis made the investigation process very easy and attained the objective. The other

case is child exploitation. The criminals come out and admit to having a mental problem and

sexual affection, which leads to such a crime. In this case, we use the bottom-up method.

Sympathizing with the offender helps a lot in collecting more information. By using the case

above, we can quickly evaluate and see the practical functionality of the profile. They are

instrumental since they set an objective which they eventually accomplished. Some problems

were encountered but are minor, such as more experienced people in creating profiles. In

general, these profiles are beneficial and can bring revolution in the modern world of crimes.

In conclusion, profiles are encouraged to be used more and more to reduce crimes in the

current world. More criminal profilers are encouraged to diversify and develop an idea of if two

or more cases are interconnected to deal effectively with the situation at hand. The time used in

the whole profiling process should be limited to give a gist for the investigations that might be

taking place. Since not all the opinions formed can be valid in the court of law, profiles need to

be deeply analyzed.
