4th INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THE PABLO CASALS FESTIVAL OF PRADES

CHAMBER MUSIC WORKS

4th EDITION – April 2nd 2011

A- GENERAL RULES

1) The competition is open to composers of all nationalities born after


April 2nd 1971.
2) The competitors commit themselves to submit one new chamber
music composition never performed in public before April 2nd 2011.
3) The composition must be intended for any formation from three to
six players. Admitted instruments: violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet,
oboe, bassoon, French horn, piano. Cello is mandatory.
4) The registrations must be sent to the Competition’s Office and be
postmarked on or before November 2nd 2010.
5) The very fact of competing implies, on the part of the candidates,
the acceptance of all of the rules of the competition, the
arrangements regarding the order of play and the decisions of the
jury.

The international composition takes place in Prades every two years. Its 4 th
edition is scheduled on Saturday April 2nd 2011. The concert will be public
and will be held in the Chapter Hall of the Abbey Saint Michel de Cuxa in
presence of the Jury members.

The competition is open to composers of all nationalities born after April


2nd 1971.

The competition is devoted to chamber music compositions lasting about


15 minutes. The required nomenclature is a formation from three to six
instruments in any combination. Admitted instruments: violin, viola, cello
(mandatory), flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn, piano. Only cello
is mandatory.

The works admitted by the organisers will be performed in Prades as a


World Premiere, on Saturday April 2nd 2011 in presence of the jury. No
work can have been performed before that date. Every work that was
performed in public before April 2nd 2011, will be automatically eliminated.

B- Registration Rules

The request of admission to the competition must be done by entry form


(or photocopy of the entry form) before November 2nd 2010 by e-mail or
the post (date proved by postmark).
The entry form has to be duly and entirely filled out in legible block letters
and signed by the candidate.

The entry form and all the enclosures have to be sent, at the latest by
November 2nd 2010 (postmark) to the following address:

To allow the registration to be taken into consideration, the following


documents must be attached:
- Curriculum vitae, indicating institutions where musical studies were
undertaken, possible diplomas, most important public performances
(venue, date), previously won international competitions prizes.
- Photocopy of a document of identification or of a passport.
- Two references from well-known persons who are in the field of
music (music teachers, composers, journalist-music critical, director
of an University or Conservatoire). These letters are requested for
beginning composers only.
- eight copies of the work (the individual parts will be to provide by
the finalists only).

The attachments to the entry form as well as the scores will not be
returned.

C- Admission

After due consideration of the competitors’ applications, the organisers


shall be the sole judges of their admission to compete. The selected
competitors will receive personal notification from the jury. The number of
the applicants is not limited. The organisers’ decisions to validate or not
the applications will be based on the provided documents and clear and
legible scores.

The jury will nominate the finalists before the 31 st January 2011 and will
immediately inform them. The individual scores must then be sent by the
8th of February at the latest to the performers, and a complete set of the
individual scores to the Direction of the Competition.

Each finalist will have one rehearsal with the performers in the days
preceding the prize awarding. During this rehearsal the competitor will be
allowed to slightly modify the score.

D- The programme of awarding the prize

The finalists’ concert: Saturday, April 2nd, at 4 p.m. in the Chapter Hall of
the Abbey Saint-Michel de Cuxa. Before the concert a drawing will be
done by one of the finalists to determine the order of play.

The composers are required to be present. Professional soloists and


groups will perform the pieces.

On the competition day, the rehearsals will take place at the Abbey Saint-
Michel de Cuxa according to the schedule established by the nominated
composers and the performers.

At the end of the round the jury will deliberate in camera for 20-30
minutes. The jury will announce the winner in public and give him/her the
prize of 15 000 euros.
The awarded work will then again be performed.

E- The Jury

The official jury is composed of 7 important personalities from the classical


music world:

Michel Lethiec Clarinettist
Vladimir Mendelssohn Violist
Arto Noras Cellist
Barry Douglas Pianist

At the end of the programme, the deliberation will be held according to


the principles and the procedure of judgement determined by the Jury and
agreed upon by the organisers of the competition.

The Jury’s decision is final.

F- Prize and commitments

The prize is 15000 Euros.


The prizewinner will be invited to the 59th Pablo Casals Festival in 2011.
The awarded work will be presented to the festival listeners as well as be
performed in occasion of the 19th edition, in 2012, of “Prades aux Champs-
Elysées” in Paris.

G- Utilization of the competing works

The organisers of the competition will enjoy the unlimited exclusive rights
to broadcast on radio and television, record, film and photograph all the
events connected to the competition, including the performances of the
concert (production of CDs and recording on sound tracks or video),
without any obligation to compensate the candidates.

The final round of the competition is public. The public will comply with the
instructions given at the beginning of the event.

The eliminated candidates will be given the opportunity to discuss the


result with the jury members.

H- Actual expenses: journey and accommodation

The finalists have to arrive to Prades not later than two days before the
concert. The organisers of the International Composition Competition of
the Pablo Casals Festival will be financially responsible for the journey to
Prades and back as well as the accommodation at the hotel. The
accommodation includes breakfast.

The candidates will make the reservation and pay for the voyage, which
will be refunded after the competition. Only flights in economy class and
train tickets for 2nd class will be refunded. In order to enable the organisers
of the competition to refund the travel expenses, the candidates are
requested to furnish the original flight or train tickets on their return.
