Unit 1O2: strategies for planning safe and sustainable interactions with outdoor environments

 
The task
You will be planning all of the details of an outdoor education camp. The trip must include an overnight
journey based hiking component but may include other activities such as: rock climbing, Mountain biking,
surfing, etc. no staying in plush accommodation. All accommodation will be OES style; in tents, tarps or
under the stars. The trip must have an educational focus from a part of the OES course.

1. Trip Proposal: You will need to have your trip approved before you begin. This is a brief summary of
what you plan to do:

- Trip dates
- Location
- Activities
- Transportation

You will need to choose your location and activity. You will be choosing a location within Victoria.
There are many awesome locations in Victoria!
Use the parks Victoria website for more information on locations to choose
- Grampians National Park
- Great Otway National Park
- Lake Tali Karng
- Alpine National Park
- Baw Baw National Park
- Bunyip state park
- Mitchell river
- Cathedral Ranges

This will need to be approved before moving onto step 2.

2. Include photographs of the location and activity along with a full description of what you plan to do
there and a map detailing the route or areas you plan to visit.

3. A detailed budget of all of your expenses, this will include daily food, equipment purchase or rental,
transportation and any other costs incurred. You will need to provide evidence of your costings.
Assume that any gear the school owns can be used for free this includes: tents, trangias, sleeping
mats, hiking packs, MTBs even the bus!
4. An equipment list including all of the equipment your group will need to bring as well as the
equipment that you will need to purchase/ hire. Equipment and clothing lists – detailed list specifying
quantities and types of clothing. The equipment list The equipment list should have two columns;
personal equipment to be brought and equipment supplied.

5. A ‘risk analysis’ of at least 5 risks including hazards, outcomes, likelihood, and management
strategies presented in table form
6. Emergency services contact information and nearest hospitals, police station and fire station and
towns
7. A menu plan for a group of 3
8. An overview or ‘itinerary’ of each day of the trip include calculations of walking time and
descriptions of the terrain that might be encountered and any activities planned.
9. Detail the educational outcomes of the trip and how they will be addressed.
10. A 5 point code of conduct for each activity you will be undertaking
11. The specific Minimal impact strategies you will use with regard to camping, walking, toileting and
transportation
All of the information detailed above will be presented as a ‘trip brief’. Use any trip briefs that you have been
given throughout the year as a template for how the information should be set out.

It will be important that you complete the sections in order as we will cover topics in class
relating to each item.
