Week #5

This week at my internship was rather uneventful. The week was what has become

routine for me this semester (so far). However, I think that this will soon change as the teams I’m

working with are finally delving into our projects more and more.

At the beginning of the week, I focused primarily on the assigned readings. This week the

readings we were given were centered around intersectionality and especially intersectional

feminism. There were also videos that we were assigned to watch, one of which was a discussion

between feminist author bell hooks (Gloria Jean Watkins) and transgender actress Laverne Cox.

This talk was a very deep conversation about feminism and the need for feminism in our society.

Both of these individuals are black females that are very involved in activism, for women, for the

LGBTQ+ community, and for the black community. They also provide insight about what it is

like to live as a black woman in today’s society, which I really enjoy learning more about

because I am white and I can never understand truly what it is like to experience the world as a

person of color, so I think it helps me make sure to keep in mind that everyone has different

experiences and things that influence their lives. This helps me attempt to be mindful of the role

demographics play in daily life but also how they can be important to be mindful of in the field

of public health.

Later on in the week, I had the bulk of my weekly meetings with my sexual assault

awareness month team and my inclusive sex education team. I honestly felt a bit overwhelmed

by my sexual assault awareness meeting because I didn’t realize we were going to be planning

quite so many events. We will have to plan at least five events for April, and I truly feel out of

my element because I don’t even plan or go to parties. This is definitely a challenge for me, not

only because of my inexperience but because of my anxiety. I am hopeful that I can get my best
work done for our team, but I am still quite apprehensive. My inclusive sex education team

meeting went well this week, but again, I have zero experience with the type of thing we will be

doing for our video library project and that does give me a feeling of being overwhelmed and

worried about it, but I feel like I am trying my best and hopefully our videos will come together

well.
