Angles, Parallel Lines and Transversals

Vocabulary:
parallel: Two lines that stay equal distance apart and stretch to infinity are parallel lines.
The symbol for parallel lines is || or also shown as //.
transversal: A line that crosses, or cuts through, two or more lines is known as a transversal.
When two parallel lines (they do not have to be parallel) are crossed through by a third line, the
third line is known as a transversal.

The transversal we generally work with looks like the one below.

However, transversals can cross or cut through more than two lines and those lines do not have
to be parallel.

Also, remember, two angles whose sum equals 180o are supplementary (the two angles
supplement each other) and two angles whose sum equals 90 o are complementary (the two
angles complement each other).

Let’s look at all the pairs of angles created by a transversal, their names and attributes.

Vertical Angles
(pairs of opposite, congruent angles made by two intersecting lines)

Let’s look more closely at those corresponding and alternate angles.

Corresponding Angles
(congruent to its correspond angle)

Consecutive Interior Angles and Exterior Angles

(consecutive in transversals means same side)

Interior and Exterior Angles
(obtuse and an acute angles whose sum = 180o )
vertical to its Alternate Interior or Exterior angle.

Interior sit within the parallel lines. Exterior sit below and above (outside)
the parallel lines.
