The volatile memory database in the RAM of the controller card is maintained by the NE.
It reflects the current NE configuration, the NE alarm states and conditions, and the
control plane-related information. The active database resides on the active controller
card of the master shelf. A synchronized copy of the database exists on the non-volatile
storage device on the standby controller card of the master shelf.
A temporary database on the active controller card of the master shelf is used during
backup and restore operations. The temporary database is neither visible to the operator
nor accessible by the operator. A remote file server (RFS) can be used as the repository
for all database backup operations. The temporary database can be copied to/from the
RFS.

How to manage database backup
Main steps to perform a database backup

1. Preparation and starting of a database backup

 Administration > Database > Backup and Restore

©
6 Nokia 2018 Nokia Confidential

Note that database backup and restore operations are typically performed via NMS.

Database Backup and Restore settings:

User ID/Password to get access to FTP/SFTP server.
Server IP: IP address of FTP/SFTP server.
Directory: file directory used on the FTP/SFTP server.
Filename: file name of the database

How to manage database restore
Main steps to perform a database restore

1. Preparation and starting of a database restore

• Administration > Database > Backup and Restore

Note: A database restore will not change the

address of the OAMP port. Other LAN ports
(E1, CIT), however, will change to the value of
the database restored.

Database Backup and Restore settings:

User ID/Password to get access to FTP/SFTP server.
Server IP: IP address of FTP/SFTP server.
Directory: file directory used on the FTP/SFTP server.
Filename: file name of the database

Note: The “Forced Restore” command will run a system restore despite the existence of
failure conditions.

Exercise: manage backup

1. Perform a backup of your database.

2. Delete one of the existing connections of your PSS-8/24x.
3. Restore your previously saved configuration database and check it for the existence of the
previously deleted connection.

This exercise can only be performed for each available

NE by one operator/group at the same time.

Time allowed:
30 minutes

Software download principles

• In-service upgrade: software download feature provides a mechanism to load the software
from a remote file server or from an USB flash drive onto a network element without
impact on service
• Downloaded software is identified by a release identifier.

Software download includes the following functionalities:

• Containing firmware for all cards
• XCEC8/CCC supports ability to receive a set of files containing software for all cards of the
PSS-8/24x and of other shelf types of the 1830 PSS SWDM application
• XCEC8/CCC supports download function through CLI, TL1, and WebUI request
• XCEC8/CCC supports download function from a remote file server.
• Commands are provided to retrieve the firmware version and software version (release ID)
of software that runs on the NE.

The detailed procedures are documented in the 1830 PSS-8x/24x Installation and
System Turn-Up Guide.

In general, the following types of loopbacks are possible:

• Facility loopback
• Terminal loopback
In a facility loopback, the received incoming signal is connected to the associated
transmitter in the return direction. These loopbacks can be used to test the correct
cabling between two network elements including the involved interface ports. Depending
upon card, facility loopbacks are supported for OTH, SDH/SONET, and Ethernet signals.
The incoming signal in the upstream direction that is replaced by the looped signal is
disconnected.
Facility loopbacks provides the following functions:
• Force AIS insertion (for OTH/SDH/SONET)
• CSF insertion (for Ethernet)
In a terminal loopback, the signal that is about to be transmitted is connected to the
associated incoming receiver. These loopbacks can be used to test signal paths through a
network element. Depending upon card, terminal loopbacks are supported for
SDH/SONET, OTH, and Ethernet signals. Terminal loopbacks are also supported on uplink
cards, but the consequent action to insert AIS is not supported for uplink cards.
Terminal loopbacks can be set up as follows:
• Transparent (signal transmitted in the downstream direction is not changed).
Unused signals in the incoming direction of transmission are automatically terminated.
Depending on the configuration of consequent actions, an appropriate consequent
action signal is inserted into unused signals in the outgoing direction of transmission, or
the looped signal is continued in the outgoing direction of transmission.
Precondition: Port needs to be set in “Maintenance” mode.
If a device has a loopback enabled, the "Active Loopback" condition type (“ACTLPBK”) is
assigned to it.

How to do a loopback

Set port into “Maintenance” state

©
11Nokia 2018 Nokia Confidential

Important: Primary state of the port has to be set in “Maintenance” state. Thus leading
to secondary state to “Maintenance”.
Note: Primary state indication is “Out of Service, Auto and Mgmt” (not “Maintenance”!).

How to do a loopback [cont.]

Enable loopback

©
12Nokia 2018 Nokia Confidential

To get a list of current loopbacks open the main menu of the WebUI. Go to Report ->
Condition List -> search for condition “LPBKLINE” to get list of current loopbacks.

Exercise: facility loopback

Use an existing error free connection.

Perform a terminal loopback:
• Create a terminal loopback on an existing connection.
• Check the system response
• Remove the loopback.

Note: All ports of the interface card must

be set in Out of Service state before.

The interface card must be set in Out of Service – Auto and Mgmt state before deletion.
Note that all ports of the interface card must be set in OoS – Auto and Mgmt state
before card deletion.

For the detailed description about replacing a card pls refer to the 1830 PSS
Maintenance and Trouble-Clearing Guide.

Card reboot

©
15Nokia 2018 Nokia Confidential

The user can request a manual reboot of the entire NE which reboots all applicable circuit
packs. Both warm and cold restarts are supported. For a cold restart, WebUI displays a
warning indicating that service may be affected. The user is allowed to continue with the
request or cancel. (USRPNL, FAN, PF, SFC, SFD, ITLB, ITLU, and DCM have no processors
and cannot be restarted.)

A warm reboot re-initializes the NE software only, and is not service affecting. Whereas a
cold reboot re-initializes the NE hardware and software. This is service affecting.

“Force Cold Reboot” provides a powerful command which will simplify the reboot process
by executing all the following configuration steps within ONE command:
• Saving ALL port states of the card
• Set ALL port states to down status
• Perform cold reboot of the complete card
• After card reboot is finished all port states will be restored again.

Note: Cold restart of a transmission-carrying pack kills traffic, and thus cold restart is not
allowed on an in-service pack.
When a pack warm reboots or is cold rebooted the PM data is not available. Similarly, pack
related alarms cannot be retrieved.

Per-card power measurement

• Allows retrieval of power consumption per-card

• Supported for all cards of the PSS-8x/24x
• Provides power consumption based on current draw measurement based
on interactive retrieval initiated via UI command
• Realtime on-demand measurement
• Enabled by default

This feature is also available via CLI and via TL1.

The TL1 command for per-card power measurement is RTRV-EQPT.
