Determination Of The"
Solubility Product

"Soluble Salt

:Aim
To become familiar with equilibria involving sparingly soluble substances by
determining the value of the solubility product constant for a sparingly soluble
.salt

:Ksp for Ca(OH)2

=Moles of OH- = moles H+= M x V

mol/L x 11.2 x 10-3 L= 1.12 x10-3 = 1 x 10-3 mole 0.1

-moles OH-/ Volume OH =]-OH[

x 10-3 mole/ 25 x10-3 L 0.04 M 1 =

1/2 [OH-] = 1/2 (0.04)M = 0.02 M = ]Ca+2[

Solubility of Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] = 1/2 [OH-] = 0.02 M

Ksp for Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] . [OH-]2= 0.02 (0.04)2 = 4.5 x 10 -5 = 4 x 10 -5

.At 24 C

:Points to discuss
.All salts are strong electrolyets with few exceptions -

Salts can be devided into three types: slightly (springly) soluble, soluble, and -
.very soluble in water

: The solubility Product constant for Ca(OH)2 -

Ca(OH)2 (s) ⇌ Ca+2 (aq) + OH‾ (aq)

Ksp for Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] . [OH-]2

- Solubility of Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] = 1/2 [OH-]

In saturated solution the product concentration of [Ca+2] and [OH-] cannot -

exceed the Ksp value. If it exceeds the Ksp value precipitation of Ca(OH)2
.would occur until this product is reduced to the value of Ksp

:Errors and sources of errors

Though errors are not clear in my data and my calculations, but errors in this
experiment can may refer to shaking the bottle that contains calcium
hydroxide in distilled water, so we should careful with adding the solution.
Also we should be careful during the titration, make sure to add a good
.amount of Phenolphthalein so that we stop titration at the end point

:Conclusion
At this experiment we could see the behavior of sparingly salts ( Ca(OH) 2 ) in
water and during titration, we also could determine the value of the solubility
. product constant "Ksp" and it was equal to 4 x 10 -5

Ca(OH)2 (s) ⇌ Ca+2 (aq) + OH‾ (aq)

Solubility of Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] = 1/2 [OH-]

Ksp for Ca(OH)2= [Ca+2] . .
