INSTRUCTION: Solve the following problems, correctly and systematically, and show all the necessary figures.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prob. # 1] The air conditions at the intake of an air compressor are 28 oC, 50 % RH, and 101 kPaa. The
air is compressed to 400 kPaa, and sent to an intercooler. If condensation of water vapor from the
compressed air is to be prevented, what is the minimum temperature to which the air can be cooled in the
intercooler? (15 points)

Prob. # 2] An assembly hall was to have an air conditioning unit installed which would be maintained at
26 C DB and 50 % RH. The unit delivers air at 15 C DB and the calculated sensible heat load is 150 kW
and latent heat load is 51.3 kW. Twenty percent by weight of extracted air is made up is made up of
outside air at 34 C DB and 60 % RH while eighty percent is extracted by the air conditioner from the
assembly hall. Determine the refrigeration load in TR and the ventilation load. (20 points)

Prob. # 3] An air conditioning system consists of a heating section followed by a humidifying section that
supplies saturated steam at 100 oC. One m3/s of air enters the heating section at 10 oC and 70 % Rh. It
leaves the humidifying section at 22 oC and 50 % RH. Determine the temperature of the air when it leaves
the heating section. (15 points)

Prob. # 4] Atmospheric air at 34 oC DB and 60 % RH is to be conditioned to 21 oC DB and 50 % RH.

This is to be done by first cooling the incoming free air in a spray of chilled water to the dew point of the
desired state and then heating the resulting mixture. The temperature of the spray water increases from 3
o
C to 9 oC. For 6.0 m3/s of incoming free air, determine a) the temperature of the air leaving the spray; b)
the amount of vapor removed from the free air; c) the amount of spray water required; and d) the tons of
refrigeration required to chill the spray water back to 3 oC. (20 points)
Prob. # 5] The known data for building to be air conditioned are as follows:
Room latent heat 23.44 kW
Room total heat 58.61 kW
Room design conditions 26 C DB and 50 % RH
Outside design conditions 35 C DB and 24 C WB
Minimum outside air 0.24 m3/s
a. The volume flow rate of air entering the CDA;
b. The temperature of air entering cooling coil, DB and WB.
c. Plot the complete psychrometric processes on the psychrometric chart, labeling each point of the
processes.
d. Find the refrigeration capacity and the reheater capacity.
(30 points)
