types of adverbs and prepositions that are used
in the English language.

ADVERB
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an
adjective and an adverb. It adds more
information about the place, time, manner etc
to a verb.

e.g. slowly, beautifully, here, always, often,


tomorrow, yesterday etc

Adverb of Manner
 This type of adverb tells how something is
done. It answers the question "how'.
Examples:
 fast, quickly, slowly, quietly, softly, silently,

happily, beautifully, kindly, etc.

 Ama walks slowly.


 She sang the National Anthem beautifully.
 Owusu entered the room quietly.
 He did the work nicely.

Adverb of Time
 This type of adverb tells when something is
done. It answers the question "when?"
 
 Examples: now, tomorrow, yesterday, soon,

last week, this morning, next month.

 My father came to our school yesterday.


 We will write the examination next week.
 Will she come to school tomorrow?
 Come here now!

 These adverbs tell where something
happens. They answer the question
"where?"
 Examples: here, there, downstairs,

backwards, outside, inside, above, below.

 My friends are outside.


 They are playing the ball there.
 Come here!
 He has gone upstairs.

 Examples: always , often, regularly, rarely,

seldom.

 Always go to school early.

 This type of adverb tells to what extent
something is done. Examples: very,
extremely, rather, too, quite, considerably,
totally, fairly.

 She walks very slowly.


 Ama is extremely beautiful.
 I am totally exhausted.
 He is quite handsome.
 She is fairly good at English.

superlatives just like adjectives.

 A preposition is a word or group of words
used especially before a noun or a pronoun to
show place, direction, time, etc.

Examples:
 In, from, to, at, on, by, across

 These kinds of preposition indicate

movement to and from one place to another.


 e.g. from, into, onto, off, out of, towards,

Prepositions of Position
 These prepositions indicate the position of

something. Some of these prepositions are:


above, behind, at, below, in, inside, under,
over.
 He played the ball over the goal post.

 Araba sits behind me in class.

 The teacher is in his office.

 These prepositions answer the question of

"when". Some of them are: at, between, during,


throughout, from.

 The competition will take place between June


and July.

 During Christmas, a lot of accidents occur.

 Kojo will sit for his examination in October.

Complex Prepositions

 Complex prepositions are prepositions made


up of a simple preposition followed by a noun
and then followed by another simple
preposition.

 Examples: In addition to, in charge of, in spite


of, in front of, with regard to, by dint of, as a
result of, in accordance with.

and an adverb. It adds more information about the
place, time, manner etc to a verb.

 There are types of adverb such as adverbs of manner,


time, place, degree, frequency, etc.

 A preposition is a word or group of words used


especially before a noun or a pronoun to show
place, direction, time, etc.

 There two types: simple preposition and complex


preposition
