THE HENLEY COLLEGE / 62441

LEILA GYNGELL-TOWNSEND / 983070
PROPOSAL/ 1ST
FEBRUARY 2021

Rationale
Looking at the progress I have made over the 12 previous units, I am excited to begin my Final
Major Project with the knowledge and skills behind me that I have developed over my
qualification. I am happy with how certain abilities like scriptwriting and analysing have
improved though practise and patience; a skill that has helped to finalise my productions to a
high standard. Also, having been given more creative license this time round, my aim is to use
those skills to the best of my ability in this Unit. Areas in which I struggled, such as using
effective lighting and creative camera angles have been improved upon, especially over the past
few units. This has all been in preparation for my Final Major Project. I think creating a short
film will showcase my storytelling and camera skills best, as it’s what I’ve been working the
hardest on throughout my course. A psychological thriller short film will allow me to use much
more imaginative camerawork and building tensions with music and editing will be a vital
part of the storytelling process which I am confident in doing. It’s important to use my best and
most developed skills to ensure that I produce a high quality Final Major Project. My interests in
media began in my youth, so being able to build upon this activity has allowed me to have a
positive attitude towards learning and an eagerness to Improve and produce work to standards
that I am proud of. This includes all aspects of the creative process like, research, data collection
and Foley and audio skills. Doing well and securing a high grade is important to me as I am
passionate about this course and its challenges in both my personal and academic parameters.
Therefore, creating a successful and tangible product is essential to my progress in the media
sector, as I wish to continue my studies at university level and beyond.

Project Concept
The aims of my production are a combination of both academic and personal
goals. Academically, I will strvie for a Merit grade or higher in hopes to meet the required level
for Universities that I have applied to. I want to be able to prove to both my teachers and I, that I
am capable of commitment, improvement, and success. I work to create something that I am
proud of and can call my own. To achieve this, I plan to use a variety of equipment. This includes
items such as cameras, microphones, camera mounts and ‘dollies’. Resources I can also take
advantage of, include the College’s storage equipment, and features such as the recording booth
and green screen studio- which open ups up many more opportunities and a variety of
filming locations. Another method I will use to improve my standards will be to regularly ask
and receive feedback from peers and teachers to support my progressive creative methods. I
want my production to have moral value to its audience by having a strong message and give
the audience something to take away and think about. Such as a lesson or a twist ending to
shock the viewer. One possibility is a short film- as a continuing story line, as it suits this kind of
plot well. In acknowledgement of time restrictions, I will complete my primary research in
depth before fine tuning my production. Worries and concerns would be relying on actors and
finding appropriate locations. In preparation I have warned the actors of their roles in my
production well ahead of time to ensure availability and reliability. I will also make sure to build
my idea around the locations made accessible to me like college, homes and public spaces like
the woods. Making sure I am able to travel and that I can get actors and equipment
there successfully. The kind of film that I am looking to produce is a well-made short
film with strong aspects of psychological thriller within the storyline, editing and
camerawork. I want high quality footage with high resolution and no shaky shots and I
want good and effective lighting. I will manage all this by utilising equipment made
available o me and reviewing footage often, scheduling reshoots or practising the
shoots beforehand to ensure everything works properly.

Evaluation
Evaluating and reflecting upon my work on a weekly basis will allow me to assess the work I
have completed in smaller chunks as I go along to ensure quality control. I can check to see that
I am on top of all my work before continuing with my project. These regular intervals also
allow me to receive feedback from teachers and peers, to allow me in developing my work
further. It is the perfect way to record my creative process and decision making. Making sure I
keep constant themes and aims throughout the Unit,
I will often reference the initial brief, in particular detail in the final evaluation and be both
reflective and analytical in doing so. I have fallen short in this area by not sticking to the original
disciplines and criteria. I will continually note any changes so that my entire process is
documented in full. This will make my final works clear, when they might differ from the initial
plan. I want to make my entire process from start to finish be as clear as possible, as I feel I have
lacked in detail with weekly blogs and evaluating before. These are the steps I will take towards
improving this area of work. With researching my topic, I will look into real behaviours of a
child/teen psychopath and include those within my short
film to make it as realistic and believable as possible. I can look at real life stories and how
psychopaths are portrayed in other movies.
