The play Wait Until Dark, written by Frederick Knott takes place in a basement
apartment in Greenwich Village, New York in 1966. This apartment is inhabited by Susy and
Sam Hendrix, though they are not the first people we meet inside. This thriller opened in
February of 1966 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. It was directed by Arthur Penn. It was made
bohemians, which makes it the perfect location for our couple, Sam and Susy Hendrix. Sam is a
photographer and ex-navy, while Susy is more of a homebody, due to the fact that she is blind.
Two ex-convicts, Mike and Carlino are called to the house of Sam and Susy by con-man Roat to
find a doll that has been lost. Unknown to the Hendrixes, this doll contains thousands of dollars
worth of heroin. The three con-men trick Susy into helping them look for the doll, convincing
her that it is an incriminating piece of evidence against her husband for murder.
