Education History Timeline

Listed below are the 10 education related events I picked for my timeline.

1. Brown vs. Board of Education

2. National Defense Education Act
3. Elementary & Secondary Education Act
4. Title VII
5. Title IX
6. Public Law 94-142
7. A Nation at Risk
8. Goals 2000: Educate America Act
9. No Child Left Behind Act
10. Common Core Standards

Brown vs. Board of Education was based around the rejected "separate but equal"
doctrine that had been in place since 1850. The main goal was to begin desegregating schools.
This obviously was to help students of color to not feel inferior to others. National Defense
Education Act of 1958 made provisions with sponsored research to subjects such as science,
math, modern foreign languages, and guidance. Elementary & Secondary Education Act and
Title VII are similar were they are working with low-income students and creating equal
opportunities for them. The main difference is Title VII is focused on limited English speaking
students. Title IX was created to eliminate discrimination on the basis of sex in an educational
setting. Public Law 94-142 focuses on children with disabilities and setting up procedures in
place to give them the education they deserve and need. Parents are also able to get involved
in their children's school planning due to whatever their needs maybe. The next three on the
list all seem to be very similar in what they are trying to achieve for the education system. A
Nation at Risk, Goals 2000, and NCLB all involved some type of reforming education to improve
school quality and students scores. Common Core Standards was created to get all states
together under State Standards, but has been very difficult on teachers to adjust to.

When looking back at all of the events that have happened, the first 6 mainly focus on
helping others achieve equal rights and opportunities for those who didn't have any before.
They all have the best interest in the students and trying to create the most opportunities for
them to thrive as other students receive. When you look at later events, the focus is more on
how we can improve the system as a whole, how can we get students test scores up, etc. They
are wanting the US to be the very best in education.
