TODDLER/TWO-YEAR-OLD EXPERIENCES

1. Sensory 2. Motor 3. Language 4. Health/nutrition 5. Social/Emotional

Age group:    1 year old              2-year-old
Objective: Have children work on and perfect their fine motor skills involved with blowing and catching
bubbles.
Materials: Large bubble wands, soapy water, food coloring
(The food coloring helps the children see their bubbles easier)

Scaffolding: Child can blow on hot food to cool it down. They blow out their birthday candles. Now we model
how blowing and controlling how hard they blow can create bubbles. They will use their hands and work on
their movements to dip the wand and hold up to their face to blow. They will also try to catch and pop the
bubbles they blow.

Facilitation: In a large bucket the caregiver will make the colored soapy water and place the wands inside. The
caregiver will demonstrate how to blow bubbles and allow the toddlers to try to pop as many as they can. Next
the caregiver will allow the toddlers to blow their bubbles. The caregiver will be giving toddlers advice on how
to perfect their technique (blow softer, harder, pull the wand closer to your face…). Play with toddlers to help
keep them entertained with the bubbles.

DAP support: Page-98 Play Development. Caregivers play with toddlers, especially when they can help
children to see expanded play possibilities. For example some children may need adult to help to play
imaginatively, and caregivers can model for them.

1. Sensory 2. Motor 3. Language 4. Health/nutrition 5. Social/emotional

Age group:    1-year-old              2-year-old
Objective: To engage children with different textures to increase sensory development.

Materials: Plastic tablecloth, plastic trays, shaving cream, paint brush, food coloring, towels.

Scaffolding: Builds on children’s sensory development by encouraging children to feel and play with the
shaving cream. Very unstructured and based on their desire to play as they like.

Facilitation: Caregiver will set up stations of shaving cream on plastic trays, different colors for each child to
start. Caregiver will encourage children to mix and smoosh the food coloring together. Allow the children to be
messy and mix colors. Allow them to see their work change. The caregiver will also talk with the children and
describe the colors and feeling of the shaving cream as they play.

DAP support: Page-99 Objects to manipulate and explore. Caregivers allow toddlers to explore and manipulate
art materials and do not expect them to produce a finished art project.

Age group:    1 year old              2-year-old
Objective: Engage toddlers to get to a finish line by using vocabulary and listening skills.

Materials: NONE

Scaffolding: Build on children’s basic knowledge of directions and use that knowledge to get them to a
designated location.

Facilitation: Caregiver will do activity with children to familiarize children with words to be used in activity.
Caregiver will ask children to point to the left, right, forward, back. Then caregiver will go over running,
walking, stopping. Caregiver will then pick location outside and use words to direct children to the desired
location. Children will be told to walk, run, stop, left, right, forward, back… to get to the location.

DAP support: page-94 Communication. An adult initiating a conversation with a toddler gives the child ample
time to respond. Caregivers also listen attentively for the children’s verbal initiations and respond to these.

1. Sensory 2. Motor 3. Language 4. Health/nutrition 5. Social/emotional

Age group:    1 year old              2-year-old
Objective: Children will be able to demonstrate the ability to wash hands thoroughly.

Materials: Washable paint, paint brush, sink, soap

Scaffolding: Encourage children to have better hand washing skills. Children will do this by trying to get the
paint off their hands.

Facilitation: Caregiver will model and demonstrate to the toddler how to wash hands. Then the caregiver will
use paint brush to paint a mark on the child’s hand. The caregiver will have the child wash hands in sink and try
to get them to remove the paint from hand. Caregiver will stay with the child to encourage and give verbal
guidance if needed. If the child begins to get frustrated or loses interest the caregiver will help the child with the
paint.

DAP support: Page 99- Objects to manipulate and explore. Child-size sink with a good supply of paper towels
is located near areas designated for messy activities so toddlers learn that cleaning up and washing their hands
follow any messy activity.
