Improving water planning

AJWR Special Issue


Guest Editors: Joanne Tingey-Holyoak, Andrew Fenemor
and Geoff Syme

Improved water resources planning is being called for around the globe, especially in times of
increasing drought, pressurised agricultural supply chains, climate change and population growth.
This Special Issue will address a range of issues pertaining to the economic, environmental and
socio-cultural barriers and opportunities for more sustainable water management. It will address
the practicalities of implementation of water governance in a complex world. The collection of
manuscripts will highlight the history of water resources planning and management, and the
current context including politics and decision making, and the role of economics, property rights,
markets and justice in water management, including issues related to IWRM. In addition,
innovations and ways forward will be considered. Specifically, the special issue will focus on three
main areas:

1) Barriers and opportunities for water resources planning: past, present and future
a. History of water decision-making
b. The current context
i. Politics and decision-making
ii. The role of economics, property rights, markets and justice in water
management
iii. Issues of IWRM
c. Future challenges
i. Water futures
2) Implementation: scales, irrigation and water augmentation, costing models, decision-
making cultures, institutional factors and more
a. Irrigation, urban demand and/or interactions between them
b. Costing models
c. Decision-making cultures
3) Case studies and lessons from Australia and New Zealand that can inform each other’s
water planning and management

Special issue timeline

• Submission portal opens: 1st December 2020


• Abstract submission deadline: 31st January 2021
• Abstract acceptance: 10th February 2021
• Full manuscripts due: 1st June 2021
• Final acceptance: approximately 1st September 2021
