Lesson Plan - October 21st

Focus Question or Topic for this Workshop:

Finishing up book review.

WARM-UP:
10 minutes

Silent reading or free write.

ACTIVITY 1:
5-10 minutes

Students will go over the rubric for the book review, which will be due next monday.

ACTIVITY 2:
40 minutes

Students will get started on their book review and can use this time to finish reading if
they have not already.

CLOSING/REFLECTION:
What final question or final activity will tell you something about the participants’
experiences or understandings?
Checking in on the progress of the students and their book reviews will allow me to see
their understanding of the assignment.

What question or activity might help them reflect upon their own learning?
An evaluation with me or Ms. Keach will help them reflect on their own understanding of
the assignment.
Lesson Plan- October 3rd

Focus Question or Topic for this Workshop:

Watching a poetry performance and analyzing the poem, recitation, and the overall
theme.

WARM-UP:
Free Write. 10/15 minutes

ACTIVITY 1:

Questions that might be used: How can the performance of a poem help portray the
message of the poem?

Students will watch a video of 2019 Poetry Out Loud champion and look for different
approaches to performing a poem. 10/15 minutes.

ACTIVITY 2:
Students will go to website https://www.poetryoutloud.org/search/?type=poem and pick
out their own poem to start trying to memorize it. 10/15 minutes.

experiences or understandings?
Analyzing the poem recitation in Activity 1 will help the students better understand the
qualities of a good poem recitation and how to portray their specific poem throughout
their recitation.

What question or activity might help them reflect upon their own learning?
Analyzing the new poem they picked out from the Poetry Out Loud website will better
their understanding of their poem and will help them reflect on their learning from
Activity 1.

Writing poems using poetic devices.

WARM-UP:
10 minutes

ACTIVITY 1:
20 minutes

Questions that might be used: How can using poetic devices increase the quality of a
poem?

Students will write their own poem using different poetic devices. Students can choose
any type of poem to write.

ACTIVITY 2:
15 minutes

Students will have a partner revise their poems and give constructive feedback.

ACTIVITY 3:
20 minutes
Students will write a reflection about the poetic devices they chose and why they chose
to add them. Students will also reflect on how the poetic devices affected the
style/mood/feeling of the poem

CLOSING/REFLECTION:
What final question or final activity will tell you something about the participants’
experiences or understandings?
Activity 1 will show the student’s understanding on how using poetic devices affects
their poem.

Final question: How did using poetic devices throughout your poem change the style,
mood, or feeling your poem?

What question or activity might help them reflect upon their own learning?
Activity 3, a reflection activity, will help students reflect on their own understanding and
learning of poetic devices.

Focus Question or Topic for this Workshop:

Memorization exercises and working on memorizing chosen poem

WARM-UP:
10-15 minutes

Silent reading or free write.

ACTIVITY 1:
10 minutes
Memorization exercise.

Questions that might be used:What can we do to improve our memorization skills?

Students will be taught some different approaches to memorizing a poem.

ACTIVITY 2:
25 minutes

Students will put these approaches to work and will start trying to memorize their poem.

CLOSING/REFLECTION:
What final question or final activity will tell you something about the participants’
experiences or understandings?
Students will be able to check in with either me or Ms. Keach towards the end of class
where we will be able to see the progress students made and feedback towards the
memorization approaches they learned beforehand.

What question or activity might help them reflect upon their own learning?
An evaluation done by Ms Keach and I will reflect on how the memorization approaches
created an advantage or even a disadvantage to memorizing their poem.

Focus Question or Topic for this Workshop:

Finishing up book review.

WARM-UP:
10 minutes
Writing Prompt

Choose between:

The mixture of pastels that lit up the sky was a beautiful sight. However, this was a sight
to bring much danger to our ocean adventure.

Imagine you are trapped in a room with no doors, no windows, nothing. Except for a
letter, which is placed neatly in the center of the room. What does the letter say?

ACTIVITY 1:
40 minutes

Students will use this time to work on finishing up their book review. If students are done
with their book review, they can start working on more memorization for their poem.

CLOSING/REFLECTION:
What final question or final activity will tell you something about the participants’
experiences or understandings?
A final evaluation done by Ms. Keach and I for the book reviews will allow me to see
their understanding of the assignment.

The final evaluation will also help them reflect on their own understanding of their

Lesson Plan - October 28th

Focus Question or Topic for this Workshop:

Review each type of poetry that we have previously covered in class.

WARM-UP:
10-15 minutes

Silent reading or free write.

ACTIVITY 1:
15-20 minutes

Students will review the types of poetry that have been taught in class, as well as
different poetic devices they have learned to use. Students should be prepared to take a
quiz on monday.

ACTIVITY 2:
20-25 minutes

When the class review is done, students can either continue to study for the quiz on
their own, finish up their book review, or finish memorizing their poems.

CLOSING/REFLECTION:
What final question or final activity will tell you something about the participants’
experiences or understandings?
The quiz on Monday will help determine the students understanding or grasp of poetic
devices and types of poetry.

What question or activity might help them reflect upon their own learning?
The results of their quiz will also help the students reflect on their own learning and how
well they understand the poetic devices and types of poetry.
