Question 1a
The economic characteristics of the production of x units of a certain commodity can be represented
(in dollars) as follows:

Cost function:
C(x) = 100 sec (x) − 5 cot (x2 + 3x)

Price function:
p(x) = 500x + 20 Log6 ( 3x − 5 )

Determine the marginal profit function Do not simplify your answer

Profit (P(x)) = revenue − cost

revenue = price x quantity

P(x) = xp(x) − C(x)

P(x) = 500x2 + 20x Log6 ( 3x − 5 ) − 100 sec (x) + 5 cot (x2 + 3x)

!(#$%)
P'(x) = 500(2x) + 20 Log6 ( 3x − 5 ) + − 100 tan (x) sec (x) − 5 (2x) csc2 (x2 + 3x)

Question 1b
The position (in metres) of an object can be represented as a function of time (in seconds) as
follows, for t > 0.

Position function:
d(t) = 5 sin ( 2x − 3 ) + cos ( 2x − 3 )

Determine the first time at which the object comes to a stop.

Object comes to a stop at velocity, v(t), = 0

v(t) = d'(t) = 10 cos ( 2x − 3 ) − 2 sin ( 2x − 3 )

10 cos ( 2x − 3 ) − 2 sin ( 2x − 3 ) = 0

10 cos ( 2x − 3 ) = 2 sin ( 2x − 3 )

10 / 2 = sin ( 2x − 3 ) / cos ( 2x − 3 )

5 = tan ( 2x − 3 )

1.37 = 2x − 3

x = 2.2 s
Question 2
Find an equation of the line tangent at the point (2, 1) to the curve defined by:

x3 + 3xy + y3 = 15

Implicit derivative: 3x2 + 3y + 3xy' + 3y2y' = 0

!"#! !"$
y' =

sub ( 2 , 1 ) => y' = -15/9 (slope)

use slope (-15/9) and point (2, 1) to find the rule of the tangent line

y = -(15/9)x + 24/9 y = -1.7x + 2.7

Question 3
Use logarithmic differentiation to find the derivative of the following function:

y = (9x + 1)sin x (x4 − 2)cos 2x

ln y = ln ( (9x + 1)sin x (x4 − 2)cos 2x )

ln y = (sin x) ln (9x + 1) + (cos 2x) ln (x4 − 2)

Question 4a
At time t = 0, a car is travelling
southwards from point P at a speed
of 60 km/h. a second car, initially at
point Q, situated 200 km towards
the west of point P, begins to travel
eastwards at a speed of 80 km/h.

After 15 minutes, what is the rate of change of the distance, d(t), between the two cars?

Let x(t) be the distance between eastbound car and point P

Let y(t) be the distance between southbound car and point P
Let d(t) be the distance between the cars

relation between variables (all functions of t): x2 + y2 = d2

implicit derivative with respect to time: 2xx' + 2yy' = 2dd'

isolate d'(t): d' = ( 2xx' + 2yy' ) / 2d

y' = 60 km/h x' = -80 km/h (note the decreasing distance towards P)

after 15 minutes = 0.25 h y = 15 km x = 180 km d = 180.6 km

d' = (2(180)(-80) + 2(15)(60) ) / (2x180.6)

d' = -74.7 km/h

Question 4b
A man launches his boat from point A on a bank of a straight
river (parallel sides). Point C is located directly across from A at
a distance of 3 km. He wants to reach point B, which is 8 km
from point C along the bank of the river, as quickly as possible.
He could row his boat directly across the river to point C and
then run to B, or he could row directly to B, or he could row to
some point D between C and B and then run to B
He can row at a speed of 6 km/h and run at a speed of 8 km/h. The speed of the river's flow is negligible.
Where should he land his boat - measured from point C - to reach B as quickly as possible?

Let x be the distance between points C and D, therefore the distance that must be run is 8 − x

The expression for the distance that must be rowed is √3! + x !

Assuming uniform motion, time = distance /speed

√./%! 0+%
Therefore the total time is: t(x) = +
* 0

% +1
t'(x) = !
+
*√./% 0

% 1
Setting t'(x) = 0 to obtain the critical values: = => 8x = 6√9 + x #
*√./%! 0

64x2 = 324 + 36x2 yields x = 3.4 m

The boat should be landed at point D, 3.4 m from point C towards point B

Note: for completeness, one should also check the total times using the endpoints of the domain
i) x = 0 (row 3 km directly across the river to point C , then run 8 km to point B)
ii) x = 8 (row directly across the river from A to B)
