t a DESCRIPTION

r ie
op
The Type CM53 contactor (Fig. 1) is a magnetically operated device used for opening and closing electrical power

r
circuits. The contactor is equipped with a movable and a stationary contact tip. The movable tip is mounted on an

P
armature which closes when the operating coil is energized. Removing power from the operating coil permits the

GEalso actuate control circuits thru auxiliary contacts, called interlocks. These operate in con-
spring-loaded armature to open and to break the electrical circuit made by the contact tips.

The contactor may

junction with the armature of the main contactor. Refer to the specific interlock publication for interlock maintenance,
adjustment and repair.

An arc chute and a blowout coil are used on this contactor for arc suppression.

These instructions do not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment nor to provide for every possible contingency to be met in connection with installation, operation, or mainte-
nance. Should further information be desired or should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for the user’s purposes, the matter should be referred to the General
Electric Company. Any applicable Federal, State or local regulations or company safety or operating rules must take precedence over any instructions given in this material. GE has no

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

CLEANING
1. Clean the contactor with a suitable cleaner or,

2. Remove the dirt and clean with dry, compressed air.

3. Wipe away residue with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

MAIN CONTACT TIP OVERTRAVEL

Overtravel is defined as the distance a movable tip would travel after touching a stationary tip if the stationary tip
were removed.

WARNING: Cleaning solvents may be toxic and/or inflammable. They can cause serious or fatal injury if
used without proper precautions. For safety:
1. Do not inhale solvent fumes.
2. Use solvents only in adequately ventilated areas.
3. Avoid contact of solvent with the skin.
4. Do not expose solvent to flame or sparks.
5. Observe caution statements issued by the manufacturer of the solvent.

FIG. 2. MEASURING CONTACT TIP OVERTRAVEL. E-32385A.

Overtravel may be measured by either Method 1, using Gage A, or Method 2, using Gage B as shown in Table 1
and Fig. 2. Table 1 shows the correct amount of overtravel and the size of the gages required to measure that over-
travel. The overtravel values are for a new (as shipped) contactor and for an old or worn contactor. In either case,
always check overtravel with new tips installed.

Also in Table 1, an operating limit is shown for an old contactor with worn contact tips.

Insufficient Overtravel

Insufficient overtravel may be caused by, or is an indication of the following conditions:

ARMATURE

Inspect the armature for a rounded bearing edge or uneven wear (Fig. 6) as indicated by the misalignment of
contact tips. If the armature bearing edge is worn beyond 1/32 in., replace the armature.

Inspect the armature bracket (extension on the end of the armature to which the calibrating spring is attached).
Replace if worn half-way through.

Inspect the pin over which the contact pressure spring fits. Replace the pin if less than 1/64 in. remains between
the hole and the end of the pin.

Inspect the armature shim. Replace the shim if the portion between the armature and the magnet frame is
pounded more than half-way through or if the short bent-up portion is worn more than 2/3 through.

1. Install the interlock assembly onto the contactor if not already assemblied.

2. Install the arc chute.

3. Mount the contactor in its normal operating (vertical) position.

4. Connect a power supply to the coil. Energize the power supply and slowly increase the current until the con-
tactor picks up. The contactor should pick up, including contact wipe, without hesitation; that is, in one quick
motion. Note that the current reading will momentarily drop and then return to a steady state. Record the
steady state current reading.

5. Compare the reading in Step 4 with the correct value of pick-up current (Amps to Operate) in Table 3. If the
pick-up current is incorrect, adjustment is necessary. Proceed to Step 6.

c. If the pick-up current is too high, reduce the power supply to zero and loosen the spring tension a little.
Increase the power supply and check the pick-up point again. Repeat this procedure until the pick-up
point is correct. See Note.

d. If the pick-up current is too low, reduce the power supply to zero and tighten the spring tension a little.
Increase the power supply and check the pick-up point again. Repeat this procedure until the pick-up
point is correct. See Note.

NOTE: Turn the calibrating screw in 1/2 turn increments; not continuously.

7. Adjust the power supply up and down several times to pick up and drop out the contactor, making sure that
the pick-up point is still correct. If necessary, repeat Step 6. After all adjustments have been completed, tight-
en the adjusting screw locknut.

8. Remove the power supply.

CONTACTORS WITH POSITION SENSORS

Certain contactor models are equipped with 17AF45B Position Sensors instead of interlocks.

The Position Sensor is used to provide the propulsion control system with a status" signal which indicates wheth-
er the contactor is opened or closed. This information is then used to determine vehicle status during normal opera-

it on
tion, in Self-Test and in the diagnosis of FAULT indications.

To adjust the 17AF45B2 Position Sensors:

1. Connect a test light to the Common (Com) and Normally Open (N.O.) terminals (Fig. 8).

2. Insert a 0.061 in. spacer between the main contact tips. Close the main contacts manually on the spacer. Do
not energize the contactor.

3. Loosen the adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 7). Turn the adjusting screw inward until the test light just lights.
Then continue to turn the adjusting screw an additional 1-2/3 turns and lock the locknut. This adjustment
provides a 0.037 in. overtravel.

4. Release the contactor. Move the test light lead from the N.O. contact to the Normally Closed (N.C.) contact.
The light should come on.

5. Insert a 0.045 in. gage between the adjusting screw and the actuating arm. The test light should stay on. If the
test light goes out, the Position Sensor is defective and must be replaced and readjusted.

6. Seal the adjusting screw and locknut with torque seal.

NOTE: The adjustment screw must clear with the contactor dropped out.
