MODULE OBJECTIVES
• Visual Presentation 1. Given the presentation of the 336E Hydraulic Excavator Travel Hydraulic
System, the student will take notes in the classroom on the identification,
location, and basic functionality of the major components, service points, and
adjustment points of the travel hydraulic system.
• Lab 1 1. Given a 336E Hydraulic Excavator and the Lab 1 Worksheet, the student will
identify the location and explain the basic functionality of the major components,
service points, and adjustment points of the travel hydraulic system.
• Lab 2 1. Given a 336E Hydraulic Excavator, the student will use the tools listed in the
Preparation Checklist and follow the procedure to test the efficiency of the travel
motors by performing the case drain oil flow test.
• Lab 3 1. Given a 336E Hydraulic Excavator, the student will use the tools listed in the
Preparation Checklist and follow the Testing and Adjusting procedure to test and
properly adjust the travel motors’ crossover relief valves.
• Posttest 1. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will explain the
operation of the 336E travel system during high speed forward travel.
2. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will answer questions
regarding the operation of the travel motor and travel parking brake.
3. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will answer questions
regarding the basic operation of the 336E travel hydraulic system during a
forward “travel only” operation and during forward travel when the straight travel
valve is active.
4. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will answer questions
regarding the operation of the counterbalance valves and the crossover relief
valves in the 336E travel motors.

336E Hydraulic Excavator: Travel System Posttest
Given all reference material and class notes, the student will explain the basic operation of the travel hydraulic system in high
speed forward mode.
Test Directions: Number each statement below to reflect the proper order of events.
Travel pilot valves send pilot oil to right ends of left and right travel control valves
High pressure idler pump and drive pump oil flows to the travel motors
Crossover relief valves may open momentarily at start of travel
Return oil from travel motors flows across counterbalance valves to control valves
Left and right travel control valves shift to the LEFT (FORWARD TRAVEL) position
Operator selects the TWO-SPEED travel mode with the soft switch
High pressure pump supply oil shifts counterbalance valves LEFT and brake pilot valves INWARD, allowing oil to flow to travel
motors and release parking brakes
Machine ECM ENERGIZES the two-speed travel solenoid when appropriate
Travel motors begin to rotate in the FORWARD direction at LOW speed
Two-speed travel solenoid valve sends pilot oil to shift displacement change valves
Return oil flows from control valves to hydraulic oil tank
Motor swashplates move to minimum angle causing motors to rotate at high speed
Travel controls moved to FWD position, actuating the travel pilot valves
