regarding the operation of the swing motor and swing parking brake.

3. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will explain the
operation of the 336E swing hydraulic system during a swing command.

4. Given all reference materials and class notes, the student will answer questions
regarding the operation of and the hydraulic strategies used for the 336E swing
system.

336E Hydraulic Excavator : Swing Hydraulic System Posttest
Given all reference material and class notes, the student will explain the operation of
the 336E Hydraulic Excavator swing hydraulic system during a swing command.
Test Directions: N
umber each statement below to reflect the correct order of
operations for a SWING RIGHT command at START OF SWING.
Swing motor begins to rotate in the SWING RIGHT direction
Return oil flows from swing control valve to tank passages in main valve
Machine ECM ENERGIZES swing brake solenoid to release swing brake
ECM ENERGIZES the NFC flow limit PRV - pilot oil DESTROKES pump
Swing relief valve may open momentarily at start of swing movement
Swing control valve spool moves right from pilot oil at left end
Swing motor return oil flows back to swing control valve
Swing control pressure sensor sends signal to Machine ECM
Idler pump high pressure supply oil flows to the swing motor
NFC signal to idler pump is reduced, causing idler pump to UPSTROKE
When relief valve CLOSES, ECM DE-ENERGIZES the NFC flow limit PRV
Right anti-reaction valve shifts at the start of swing
Swing joystick moved to send pilot oil to left end of the swing control valve

336E Hydraulic Excavator: Swing Hydraulic System Posttest

Given all reference material and class notes, the student will answer questions regarding
the operation of the swing motor, the swing parking brake, and the swing hydraulic
system strategies.
Test Directions: Place an “X” beside the one response that best answers each multiple
choice question OR fill in the blanks with the correct responses.
1. The swing motor is:
a fixed displacement, bidirectional gear type hydraulic motor
a variable displacement, bidirectional piston type hydraulic motor
a fixed displacement, bidirectional piston type hydraulic motor
a variable displacement, unidirectional piston type hydraulic motor

2. The swing parking brake is RELEASED when:

a signal is sent to the ECM by the swing control pressure sensor
a signal is sent to the ECM by the boom down control pressure sensor
a signal is sent to the ECM by the implement pressure switch
all of the above

3. The swing system is normally supplied with high pressure oil from:
the drive pump
the idler pump
the drive pump and the idler pump
the pilot pump

4. The swing priority valve is DE-ENERGIZED by the Machine ECM to:

restrict idler pump oil flow to the Stick 1 valve during swing movement
restrict idler pump oil flow to the Stick 2 valve during swing movement
restrict idler pump oil flow to the Boom 1 valve during swing movement
allow full idler pump oil flow to the Stick 1 valve during swing movement

5. The swing relief loss strategy is used to:

DESTROKE the idler pump at the start of swing
UPSTROKE the idler pump at the start of swing
DESTROKE the drive pump at the start of swing
DESTROKE both the idler pump and the drive pump at the start of swing

6. The anti-reaction valves in the swing motor inlet manifold are used to:
reduce shock from swing start and counter rotation of the swing motor
reduce shock from swing stop and counter rotation of the swing motor
INCREASE fuel efficiency by reducing load on the pump at swing start
DECREASE swing system pressure and the initial shock at swing start
