Relief Valve (Load Sensing Signal) - Test and Adjust

SMCS - 5117-025-X8 ; 5117-081-X8

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the
engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is
not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and
the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil
filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool
enough to touch with your bare hand.

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause

personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Load Sensing Relief Valve Pressure for 950GC Wheel Loaders

Pressure setting for load sensing signal relief valve

25800 ± 500 kPa (3742 ± 73 psi)

Introduction
Note: A hydraulic test bench is the most accurate method for testing relief valves. If use of a test bench is not practical, then use the
following procedure on the machine.

Required Tools

Required Tools

Part Number Description Qty

1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group (1) 1

1U-5482 Pressure Adapter Group 1

4C-6486 (2) Stand 2

(1) The 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator is also available.
(2) Optional tooling

Test Preparation
1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel. Lower the work tool to the
ground.

2. Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of the operator.

3. Engage the parking brake.

4. Place the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

ReferenceFor more information about preparing the machine for troubleshooting, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and
Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

Test Procedure
1. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Operate the control levers and move all the cylinders in order to increase the
temperature of the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature of approximately 54 to 70°C (129 to 158°F).

2. Lower the lift arms to the ground.

3. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

4. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release".

5. Connect 1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group or 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator on the pressure tap. The pressure tap is located on
the right side of the machine on the non-engine end frame near the articulated hitch.

6. Start the engine. Raise the work tool to the maximum height. Hold the lift control lever in the full RAISE position.

Note: Do not keep the lever in the RAISE position more than 5 seconds while the pressure is at the load sensing signal relief
setting.

7. Increase the engine speed to high idle. Observe the pressure gauge with the lift control lever in the RAISE position. The pressure
setting for the relief valve should be 25800 ± 500 kPa (3742 ± 73 psi)

Note: If the pressure setting is correct, proceed to Step 8. If the pressure setting of the relief valve is not correct, proceed with the
following steps.

8. Position the work tool on the ground.

9. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

10. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release". /
11. Remove the test equipment.

12. Place the steering frame lock in the STORE position.

Adjustment Procedure

(1) Adjustment screw

(2) Locknut

Note: Always turn adjustment screw (1) clockwise in order to adjust the pressure. Clockwise rotation will compensate for any
internal friction inside the valve that would oppose the setting of the bias spring. For example, if the adjustment screw needs to be
turned counterclockwise by 1/2 turn, turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise by one full turn. Then, turn the adjustment screw
clockwise by 1/2 turn.

3. Loosen locknut (2). Turn adjustment screw (1) clockwise in order to increase the pressure setting. Turn adjustment screw (1)
counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure setting of the relief valve.

4. After adjustment screw (1) is turned for an adjustment, hold adjustment screw in place and tighten locknut (2) to a torque of 12 ±
1.4 N·m (9 ± 1 lb ft).

5. Repeat "Test the Load Sensing Signal Relief Valve".

6. If the pressure setting is not correct, repeat Steps 3 and 4.

/
7. When the pressure setting is correct, install the front guard group on the machine.

8. Start the engine and remove the lift arms from the stands. Position the work tool on the ground. Turn the key start switch to the
OFF position.

9. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release".

10. Remove the test equipment.

11. Place the steering frame lock in the STORE position.
