M3 Introduction - The Print & Broadcast Media

Most subjects in the introductory courses in Communication & Media arrange and present their
lessons from print to digital media, to show the evolutionary development of our field. We did not
follow it, and instead, in module 2, you were immediately introduced to the power of new media in
creating the so-called digital culture.

As digital natives, you are assumed to have been exposed early in your lives to digital media . The
use of new platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others, is already a given in your
generation.

In this module, we will focus on print and broadcast media as two of the earliest mass media in the
beginning of the 20th century. I expect that you will exert a little effort on this part because although
they are still around, most of you are not familiar with how they work internally.

In module 1, we explored the beginnings of these two mediums in their specific social contexts.
Here, you will learn how they specifically function as media of communication. However, because we
cannot cover all media genre in one module, we will only focus on news. The reason is two-fold. One,
because news is the most common to all mass media platforms. Second, it is one of the most pervasive
media contents in our lives.
