Study Background

Poetry is one kind of literature form that put emphasis on the utilization of rhythmic

language for instance Phonaesthetics, sound symbols to encapsulate meanings. Poetry is a form of

literature that elicits a distilled creative knowledge of reality or a particular emotional response

through the use of language that has been selected and designed for its context, tone, and rhythm.

Poetry is one of the kinds of literature that reflects intrinsic elements of meaning, such as

figures of speech, linguistic instruments, and vast vocabulary, as part of the aesthetic of the

literature art form, which is needed to express interpretative meanings with richer tones and

distinguished mood. In this regard, the paper includes an examination of the poem "The Anger in

Me," which is one of the poems presented in the case.

This poem reflects primarily on the depiction and representation of indignation, circling

around the writer, as conveyed by tones and moods of anger, agitation, and self-contemplation

expressed in the poem's passages. In this regard, the poem provides a distinguished theme that

processed the general tone and mood of the poem, as well as figures of speech that allow for a wide

range of meanings in conveying the underlying meaning to the audience. The reason I choose this

poem for review is to decode the author's understanding of the poem in terms of the usage of

linguistic instruments, which overall poses feasible characteristics of a fundamental poem,

according to the meaning of poem.

“The Anger in me “ by Jonathan Pendley
This ill temper I have is making me mad
I blow up and I don’t know why
I wish for just a moment I could handle my anger right
I wish for just a moment I could love you right
I wish my attitude would just go away
I wish my anger would stay at bay
This outlook I have on life needs to change
This outlook I have you needs to say the same
I love you deep down inside
I wish you would see
That you’re the only princess for me

The anger I have deep in side

Comes out when I least expect it
This anger I have in me should just go away
This anger I have is an annoyance
This anger I have has messed my life up
This anger I have is stupid
Anger you have messed up my marriage
Anger you have messed up my life
Anger you have destroyed who I am inside and out
Anger you are the devil
Anger you are all that is bad
This anger I have in me has made me fight
A fight that was not worth it

Anger you made me hit the wrong person

Anger you made me do the wrong things
Anger you are the feeling that I would never miss
Anger you have caused me so much sorrow
Anger you have caused nothing but grief.
Anger just go away

Definition of Poetry

The poem is distinguishable in terms of its delivery, in terms of the intended audience, since

the speaker portrayed in the poem seems to try to convey the feelings of internal tension and

indignation to the listeners, who could be the persons or people who have been emotionally hurt by

the speaker's angry attitude. The poem's main purpose is to express the speaker's dissatisfaction with

its inability or refusal to manage its indignation and apparently in continual conflict of self-

contemplation amidst the loss of desire to extinguish and/or remove its feelings of constant anger

and resentment.

Poetry is the other means of expressing oneself by language. Perhaps it was the only way to

use language at the beginning, whether it was clearly language tout court, with prose being the

derivative and younger competitor. Both poetry and language are believed to have originated in

ritual in early agricultural cultures, with poetry in particular originating as magical spells recited to

guarantee a successful harvest.

Poetry is identifiable formally because its dependent nature is more than exists in prose

composition by at least one more parameter, the thread.

The Speaker

The poem is written in first person POV, which is reflected by the use of the word "I" as the

primary subject, describing the passage of the poem in first person POV. The speaker is depicted as

the character in which is concerned and portrayed in the tone of the poem itself, which in this regard

is depicted as a furious, distressed, and devastated person, as expressed by the passages of the

poem. The poem's passages present the character's line of thought and perception of his or her own

agitation and reflection.

3
The Audience

The audience in the poem is basically a non-existent entity, the most plausible thing that can

be called “audience” is himself, why?, we can absolutely be sure that he is talking with himself in

the purpose of self lamentation. The audience referred is the “Anger” that was keep being

mentioned over and over by the speaker.

This audience, the “Anger” is a part of himself (will be represented with “he/his/him” for the

rest of the paper) that the speaker, mentioned repeatedly throughout the whole passages of the

poem. The audience is a part of himself that he despises, for the reason that the audience has played

a big role that has a immense negative impact in his life.

The Occasion

Although it was not mentioned anywhere within the lines of the poems. We can probably

infer that the occasion in this poem is most likely a moment of self-contemplation.

The Setting (Place & Time)

Same as the occasion, the poems mentioned nothing regarding The setting of the poem. But,

if we follow the train of logic, there should only be a fraction of possibilites that the speaker go into

self-contemplation in a public places so we can assume that it is a private place at a time when

people won’t disturb him, from that, we can deduce that it can be his sleeping chamber at nights

time.

Central purpose of the poem

From the author’s profile in poemhunter.com, he says that he wrote most of his poem after

his divorce with his ex-wife. And after reading the poem, we can be absolutely be sure that he

writes the story with the purpose for self-reflection. The emotion heavily represented and depicted

4
in the course of the poem is anger, self-loathe, and regret. Probably when writing the poem, the

Author is drowned by the combination of the emotions.

Main idea of the poem

The main idea of the poem is the result of the emotions the poet’s got drowned in, the mix of

all the negative feelings that bursts out in the moment of writing the poem.

Summary of the poem

The whole poem is about the poet’s pouring out all his sadness, anger, regret, and frustration

of why he repeatedly lose control of his anger and let it take control of his actions. His anger

clouded his judgement and made him do a severe mistake which resulted in a huge mistake that he

regrets deeply.

Imagery
Ii honestly didn’t find any other imagery in this poem other than :

a. Organic imagery : representation of an internal sensations, such as hunger, thirst, fatigue, or

nausea

in this particular poem, there are 3 imagery that i found, those two are the sense of anger,

sadness, and frustration.

Example of anger : “Anger you are the devil” this points out that he deeply hate his own

anger to the point that he feels that his anger is his inner devil or heart demon.

Example of sadness : “Anger you have caused nothing but grief” and “Anger just go away”

this points out that he’s already sad with himself and that he wants to throw away one of

human’s emotion that is anger

Example of frustration : “Anger you made me hit the wrong person” this points out that he is

frustrated that at one point, he got swallowed up by his anger and then he hits somebody

5
Figurative Languages

Figures of speech included in this poem, include but not limited to:

a. Metaphor: the use of comparative meanings to convey a particular meaning/definition.

Example given: “anger you are the devil”

b. Hyperbole: the over exaggeration on a particular meaning to convey emphasis on the term

Example given: Anger you have destroyed who I am inside and out

c. Irony : a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning

is different from the actual meaning of the words.

Example given : actually i think the whole poem itself is an irony, why do i think so?,

because when i think about it, “Anger” is a human’s trait, it is part of us, it can also be

thought as a fraction of who we are, in the poem, the speaker keeps blaming “Anger” which

means that he is blaming himself. He denies the reality that his “Anger” is himself and the

mistakes he made is his mistake not his “Anger”

Poem Paraphrase
I am getting angry about this bad temper
I don't know why I blow up
I wish I could control my anger for just a second.
I want to love you right for just a moment
I just wanted my mood to be gone
I wish I could keep my anger under control.
I need to improve this perspective about life
This point of view I have requires you to say the same.
Deep inside I love you
I wish you'd see you're my only princess

The wrath i have in my heart.

When i am least expecting it, it bursts out
This wrath i hold should just dissapear
This rage i have is a disturbance
My rage has caused havoc in my life.
This Anger I'm feeling is ridiculous.
This Anger has drestroyed my marriage
This Anger has wreccked my life
Anger, you have killed who I am on the inside and out.
This anger is my inner demon
This Anger is everything that is bad about me
This anger is my reason to fight
An unworthy fight

Anger made me blinded and caused me to hit the wrong person

Anger made me do mistakes
Anger you are the feeling that I would never miss
Anger you gave me so much grief.
Anger causes nothing but misery.
Anger just dissipate into thin air.

7
Conclusion
The poem “ The anger in me “ is one example of a poem that is written with fluctuation of

emotions as the fuel and motivation, and for that reason i regard this kind of poem as the purest

kind of poem.

My take on this poem is that it is a very powerful poem and will definitely and i am

absolutely confident this poem will relate to tons of people and this regretting their mistakes caused

by their anger. It’s a poem that can remind us that if we can’t control our emotions especially anger,

it will lead us to make a huge mistake that we will regret for a long time, maybe for a lifetime.

When i was surfing the internet to find the name of the author, i found in poemhunter.com

that he wrote this poem to let out his deep regret and frustration because he got divorced with his

wife for the reason that was mentioned repeatedly in the poem, his anger.

In addition to that, i got some news that his relationship with his ex-wife got better and

things have tone down, so i hope that they can re-marry and live a happy marriage live to

compensate their lost time together.
