Rain in summer

First stanza: In the first stanza the poet is describing the area when it’s not raining
and He talks about how it the drizzle and shower relieves him from the heat and
dust of the summer. It’s so hot and when it rains it all cools down and it looks so
beautiful and he is just over joyed by this feeling.
Second stanza: In the second stanza the poet is describing the sound of the rain
about how the drops of rain falling on the roofs are having a rhythmic appeal to it.
He compares it with the hoofs of the horses, to give us an image of the rhythm
and sound of the raindrops on the roof and how the spouts and pipes are filled
with over flowing water and the poet is also describing when the water runs
down the window and how it all gathers in the windows pane and filled with mud
it looks like a river roaring down. He feels overjoyed about the rain, and welcomes
it with open arms.
Poetic devices:
Simile:
 Like the tramps of hoofs
In this line the poet the comparing the sound of the droplets on the roofs
with the with the hoofs of the horse to give us an image of the rhythm.
 Like a river down the gutter roars the rain
It means that the water in the river is flowing down and it is creating the
voice of roar.
Imagery:
 From the throat of the overflowing spout
Alliteration:
 It pours and pours
 Like a river down the gutter roars the rain

Third stanza: in this stanza the poet is talking about how the heat of summer has
dried all of the fields where there is vegetation. He says that the entire field
resembles like a suitable place for the hideout of the leopard, as it’s yellow and
spotted like its fur, and stretches all over the plains. And that bit of land is
overjoyed too on the arrival of rain.
Difficult words:
 Tawny: an orange-brown or yellowish-brown color.
Simile:
 Like a leopards tawny and spotted hide
In this line the poet is comparing the leopard’s tawny to the dry grass fiedls
because of the rain it has turned yellow and he is comparing that how the
leopards are there to find their prey and that’s their hiding spot.
Alliteration:
 To the dry grass and the drier grain

Fourth stanza: the poet is now talking about the smell or the fragrance of the rain
and how the earth smells as the drops of rain falls on it, and cools down the hot
soil. It cools and calms the entire environment around which makes everyone
happy. The poet says that once it had started pouring, everyone seems to look
towards the sky, and silently thank God for showering his blessings on them on a
summer day.
Difficult words:
 Toilsome: involving hard or tedious work.
 Oxen: a castrated bull used as a draught animal.
 Yoke: a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals
and attached to the plough or cart that they are to pull.
 Encumbered: restrict or impede (someone or something) in such a way that
free action or movement is difficult.
 Lustrous: having lustre; shining.
Alliteration:
 From the well water and smoking soil.
 Their large and lustrous eyes
 More than man’s spoken word

Fifth stanza: the poet describes the joy of the peasants as they see the rain falling
from the sky and cleaning their crops and fields. They are satisfied to smell the
aroma of rain, as the pours from the sky and they are really thankful for seeing
this wonderful view. The poet says that the peasant doesn’t see any kind of harm
or sin in being satisfied that the rain has come only for his benefit ad for his own
help.
Difficult words
 Pastures: land covered with grass and other low plants suitable for grazing
animals, especially cattle or sheep.
 Incessant: (of something regarded as unpleasant) continuing without pause
or interruption.
Alliteration:
 As they bend their tops
 That he sees therein

Main idea: the main idea of this poem is that the poet wants to show his
excitement and the happiness when the rain comes after a long Summer time.
Here we can say through the poet's happiness, the happiness of nature and all the
human beings and animals are expressed and how he is really thankful of god for
this this blessing.
