sun care and make-up remover.

Price competition plays a key role for major players


Major players within beauty and personal care, especially multinationals such as Procter &
Gamble Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Unilever Pakistan Ltd and Colgate-Palmolive Ltd focused their
efforts on price competition in order to retain consumers. In a beleaguered economic situation,
consumer preferences were shaped by the value-for- money received on their purchases, a factor
which came into focus in all competitive strategies between leaders and the smaller players.
There was also a preference for economy brands and brands which aligned themselves with the
philosophy of delivering value and effectiveness. The grey market (cheap imported products)
grew in 2009 for the same reasons, as some consumers changed their preferences due to the price
advantage.

International brands receive greater visibility in new channels


The development of new channels in the form of supermarkets/hypermarkets and department
stores in major cities across Pakistan (Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad,
Peshawar and Hyderabad) provided international brands (such as Johnson & Johnson, Dove,
Axe, Head & Shoulders, Gillette, Lux, Colgate) greater visibility through stronger below-the-line
promotion at point-of-sale displays, availability of increased shelf- space and the option to
display greater variety at the same distribution outlet.
