Page Description
ALL Revised in New Format.
ALL C15 and C18 information is new.
Introduction
This guideline enables dealers and their customers to benefit from cost reductions made possible
through an established parts reusability and salvage program. Every effort has been made to provide the
most current and relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc. Since the Company makes ongoing
changes and improvements to its products, this guideline must be used with the latest technical
information available from Caterpillar to ensure such changes and improvements are incorporated where
applicable.

For questions or additional information concerning this guideline, contact Caterpillar Service Support
Division, Dealer Support (309) 675-5434.
Summary
The information in this Guideline can be used to inspect and measure a used or reconditioned cylinder
head assembly to determine if it can be used again. If a cylinder head assembly meets the specifications
in this Guideline and other applicable Guidelines, it can be expected to give normal performance until
the next overhaul when used in the same application.
A used and/or reconditioned cylinder head assembly must be checked for leaks, cracks, and flatness.
Refer to SEBF8162 for procedures and methods used to rework cylinder heads.

General Procedures
Use the following guidelines when inspecting and reconditioning a cylinder head.
• Remove the camshaft and disassemble the springs, keepers, retainers, etc., from the valves.
• Check for cracks on the combustion surface and other areas of the head. Refer to SEBF8162.
• Check the combustion surface for damage and/or erosion. Refer to SEBF8162.
• Check the cylinder head thickness. Inspect the valves, valve seats, valve springs, valve guides, and
valve rotators for damage. Refer to SEBF8162.
• Recondition the components requiring salvage, and replace the parts not meeting reuse guidelines.
• After assembly, vacuum test the valves for correct sealing. Refer to SEBF8162.

Torque Specifications
Illustration 1
The head is installed with two different length bolts. Use the longer bolts at the locations marked “X”
and the shorter bolts at the locations marked “Y”. The torque for all bolts is the same, 450 ± 15 N·m
(330 ± 11 lb ft).
1. Put 6V-4876 Anti-Seize Compound on both sides of the washer and on the bolt threads.
2. Tighten all bolts in numerical sequence to a torque of 270 ± 15 N·m (200 ± 11 lb ft).
3. Tighten all bolts in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 ± 15 N·m (330 ± 11 lb ft).
4. Retighten all bolts in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 ± 15 N·m (330 ± 11 lb ft).
5. Install all cup plugs to a depth of 1.25 ± 0.25 mm (.049 ± .010 in). The depth is measured from the
head face to the top edge of the plug.
6. Install all straight-threaded plugs using an O-ring seal. Install all taper-threaded plugs using 5P-3413

Measuring Procedure
1. Put the head, combustion surface down, on a flat surface of a table or bench.
2. Use a 6V-2012 Micrometer Depth Gauge Group (1) and measure the head thickness through the
injector hole. Refer to Chart A for specifications.

Maintain the original specification for cylinder head flatness during reconditioning. Refer to Chart A for
the recommended flatness.

Stainless steel injector sleeves (1) with O-rings (2) are used between each unit injector and the cylinder
head casting. The injector sleeves seal coolant within the head. The injector sleeves normally will not
need to be replaced. The three O-rings, however, should be replaced every time the head is removed for
valve rework, or the head is hot-tanked for cleaning.
When the injector sleeves are re-installed, apply 4C-9507 retaining compound to location (3), and clean
engine oil to location (4). Use 9U-6891 Sleeve Tool Group and a hammer to seat the sleeves in the head.
Valve Guide
Valve guides must be measured for installed height and inside bore diameter.
Refer to SEBF8162 for methods and procedures to measure the valve guide.
If using the 5P-3536 Dial Bore Gauge Group to measure the inside diameter of the valve guide, the
correct probe is [9.525 mm (0.3750 in)] and has a usable range of 0.38 mm (0.015 in). Special
Instruction GMG02562, “Using the
5P-3536 Dial Bore Gauge Group to Check Valve Guides”, gives complete instructions on the use of the
dial bore gauge.
A 6V-7068 Valve Guide Gauge is also available for a quick, “Go/No-Go” evaluation. If the
“No-Go” end fits in farther than 19.0 mm (0.75 in), the guide is over the “Use Again Maximum”
diameter and must be replaced.

Chart B.
Note: Do not reuse a valve guide if the measurement of the bore is greater than 9.538 mm (0.3755 in).
Do not use a valve and guide combination that has a difference of 0.13 mm (0.005 in) or larger.
Valve Seat
The valve seat inserts should be replaced when the valve seat width or valve head-to-cylinder head face
cannot be machined to the correct specification. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for your engine
application for removal and installation instructions of valve seat inserts.
After the inserts are installed, grind the seat face of the insert to be sure it is flat, has the correct angle,
and is in alignment with the bore in the valve guide. For specifications, refer to Chart C, Valve Seat
Insert Dimensions.

Valve seat insert dimensions. Refer to Chart C for specifications. When regrinding a valve seat, the
minimum finished seat width (E) is listed in Chart C and the maximum seat width is the intersection of
the ground face with the insert bore in the head.
The valve seat insert should be replaced when the valve seat width or valve head-to-cylinder head face
cannot be machined to the correct specification. Refer to the appropriate Service manual for your engine
application for removal and installation instructions of valve seats.
After the insert is installed, machine the sealing surface of the insert to be certain it is flat, has the
correct angle, and is in alignment with the bore in the valve guide.

Valves
There are several areas of the valve that should be checked to determine if the valve can be used again.
These areas include the valve tip, valve stem, valve head, and valve lip. If any of the four areas do not
meet the “Use again” specifications, the valve must be replaced. The valve locks or keepers should be
replaced during each rebuild.
To measure valve lip thickness, valve stem diameter, or valve projection, refer to the methods and
procedures in SEBF8162.
Refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts SEBF8002, “Valves, Valve Springs, Valve Rotators, and Locks”,
to determine if these
components are reusable after a visual inspection. Refer to Chart E for reuse specifications.
Note: Intake and exhaust valve stems are to be coated with 8T-2998 Break-in Lubricant prior to
installation in the cylinder head.

When regrinding a valve tip, a maximum limit of 0.20 mm (0.008 in) of stock removal is allowed. The
overall length of the valve must also be within the limits specified.
