Introduction (5 minutes)

Raise a discussion on the different seasons. Potential questions include: "What are the four seasons?
What activities do we do in each season? What holidays are there? What experience do you have during a
particular season?"
Explain that the seasons are a reflection of how solar energy is distributed to the Earth based on its axis
of rotation as well as its shape.
Tell your students that it is important to have seasons as a way of letting life be possible on Earth.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (5 minutes)

Ask your students to identify the four seasons again.

Explain that in different parts of the world, people experience different weather in the same season.
Ask your students if they like warm, cool, or rainy weather.
Ask your students to describe the weather for each season in your area.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

On the board, write the different types of weather that your students experience in each season.
Pair your students up.
On paper, have your students draw pictures of the seasons and make a small collage showing each of the
four different seasons. If the seasons are very similar in your area, distinguish the seasons by discussing
holidays and celebrations in each season.

Independent working time (20 minutes)

Tell your students to think about events that happen during certain seasons. For example, in the summer
is they have summer break, and the winter they have winter break.
Ask students to recount aloud some of their experiences during certain seasons. Ask them to share which
experience was effected by the season. For examples, students would not swimming at the beach with
their family in the winter.
Direct your students to create individual posters of a special event or experience that happens during
their favorite seasons. For example, if a student really enjoys celebrating Thanksgiving, instruct her to
draw a picture representing Thanksgiving and the weather during Fall.

Differentiation

Enrichment: Have your students look up the scientific basis of seasons. Give your students the Seasons
Tree Change worksheet to complete.
Support: If your students have trouble identifying the seasons, ask them to describe the different
seasons based on the clothing they wear. Give your students the Seasons and Weather worksheet to
complete.

Assessment (15 minutes)

Go around the classroom, and have students discuss the celebration/event and season they drew. Ask
students to discuss how the drawings clarify their ideas, thoughts, or feelings about their experience.
As the students present, discuss the importance of seasons and how each one has different events to
celebrate.

Review and closing (5 minutes)

Ask your students to identify the four seasons again.

Ask for volunteers to explain why seasons change and how they affect people's moods, attitudes, or
experiences.
