e)For the roof floor column, the section is controlled by bending instead of

compression and the column will fail by yielding of tension steel before crushing of
concrete.
For the column at 4 floors below the roof, the axial load increased by 5 time while
there is no change the design moment and as a result the section is controlled by
compression instead of bending and the column will fail by concrete crushing before
yielding of tension steel.
For the braced short column in multi-story reinforced concrete building,
Formula 6.56 of HKCP-2004 can be used to estimate the column size and
reinforcement with fair accuracy when the axial compression becomes controlling at
the lower floors.
As the design axial compression increases with the increase in number of
floors to be supported, the effect of the bending moment from a single floor
decreases and the effect of minor axis moment diminishes more significantly.
