SUBJECT: DISCIPLENES AND IDEAS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES Grading

Period: 1st
Duration: SY 2020-2021/ 1st Semester
Lesson 1: Definition of Social Sciences
Lesson 2: The Elements of Society and Interaction
Time allotted: 1 Week

OVERVIEW

This module will help you go through the definition of Social Sciences and the Elements
of Society that are involved in the day-to-day activities of the people which make up the whole
social system.

Please bear in mind that we are all global citizens. This means that we transcend
boundaries and are no longer restricted to only one place where we stay with regards social
interaction.

Our own food - pinikpikan that used to be served only to the people in the Cordilleras ,
for example, has become known and appreciated in other places like the lowlands or even in
other countries. In like manner, we learned how to eat samgyeupsal and kimchi from Korea;
shawarma from the Arabs; and Phad Thai from Thailand, and several others from around the
world.

Currency exchange and international trade and economic policies are always reflected in
our daily lives.

The effects of pandemic brought about by COVID-19 cover a wide area of concerns
among all people in the world. From education to economy; to politics and health care; and
relationships and behavior, among many others.

These are just some examples of globalization, acculturation, adaption, and trends as
parts of society and social interaction.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of this module, you will be able to:

a) Define Social Sciences as the study of Society.

b) Discuss your current roles as a member of your community.
c) Predict events that can happen in the near future using your knowledge of social
interaction

LEARNING DISCUSSION:

Lesson 1. Definition of Social Sciences

There are variations in the definition of Social Science presented here but they
all come to the common ground that Social Science is concerned with the relationship
of people to each other and the community where they belong.

1. According to Seligman-“Social Sciences are those mental or cultural

sciences which deal with the activities of the individual as member of the group. The
term social sciences thus embrace all those subjects which deal with the relationship of
man to the society.

2. Mitchell maintains that “Social Science is loosely applied to any kind of

study concerning man and society. In the strict sense it should refer to
the application of scientific method to the study of the intricate and
complex network of human relationship and the form of organization
designed to enable people to live together in societies.

3. To Fairchild,” Social Science is a general term for all the

sciences which are concerned with the human affairs.”
