STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I. Describe the Class

The class will be 16 2nd graders. There will be one second language learner, four
disabled children, and two gifted students.

II. Subject/Skill:

Vocabulary and writing skills

III. Objective(s)

After discussing character attributes, students will create acrostic poems with
their names without using the same words.

IV. Procedures: For a Direct Instruction Lesson

1. After discussing character attributes, students will create acrostic poems

with their names without using the same words.

2. Students will already know how to spell their names. They will also
understand and know a lot of character attributes (like loyal, shy, silly,
energetic, happy, helpful, etc.).

3. I will show the children how to create the layout of the poem. They will
see my name with what words I believe describe me.

(A- Awesome S- Smart H- Honest L- Loving E- Easy-Going Y- Youthful)

4. The children may openly discuss which words they are using and get help
from other students if they are stuck on a letter. Some letters will be more
challenging than others, so they are free to ask questions.

5. The students can work independently on the words they are using in their
poems. I will be going around the room to help the children. We will make
sure they are thinking of who they are and what kind of person they are.

V. Materials

We will need a PowerPoint presentation that tells us about character attributes,

we will also each need a piece of paper, and a pencil.
VI. Grouping Structures

The children will mostly work independently but they are free to discuss with
the class, or students nearby. This will be in our classroom.

VII. Modifications

For the gifted learners I will encourage them to think outside of the box and
come up with some complex descriptive words. They can also do their last
names if they want to! For the ELL students, I will help them translate their
language to English. They can tell me how they say the adjectives they like in
their language and we will include them on our poem. For children that need
help with writing, and reading, I will provide one on one help with spelling
and also encourage them to get help from their classmates.

VIII. Assessment

6. In this lesson the students learn new vocabulary, including the word
adjective. We will talk about the homework assignment they will get
(make an acrostic poem at home), and then I will ask the students if they
have any questions. I will know that the students have met the objectives
by looking at their poems to make sure they were creative and didn’t reuse
any words.
7. The students will go home and create an acrostic poem about one of their
family members. I will show them the poem I created for my dog, Nugget.
(N- Nosey U- Unique G- Goofy G- Good E- Empathetic T- Tiny).
