Law of Sines & Law of Cosines Date: ___________________ Period: ________

Learning Target – To apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to solve triangles.

________________________ & ________________________

The Law of Sines

• The Law of Sines allows some triangles to be solved by setting up proportional ratios
between the sine of vertex angles and their opposite sides.
• Triangles can be solved using the Law of Sines when two angles and a side length are
known (AAS & ASA) or when two side lengths and an opposite angle are known (SSA).

Example 1: Solve triangle ∆ABC using the Law of Sines.

m∠B = ____ ˚, m∠C = ____ ˚, c = ____.

Example 2 – Find the length of a bridge from A to B.

Bridge Length = _______ meters

The Law of Cosines

Example 3 – Solve triangle ∆ABC using the Law of Cosines.

m∠A = ____ ˚, m∠B = ____ ˚, m∠C = ____ ˚.

Example 4 – Find the step angle (∠B) from a dinosaur's fossilized prints.
→ The closer the step angle of a dinosaur was to 180˚, the more efficient the animal was.
Determine the step angle of angle B.

m∠B = ____ ˚
