Instructions & How to Use a Clinometer

1. Choose which teammate will operate the clinometer & Right Triangle Trigonometry Toolbox
which will take the angle measurement.
The three basic trigonometric ratios.

2. Have the person with the clinometer aim it at the object

by sighting it in straw-viewer. The other person takes and
records the measurement by reading the angle dial.

3. Do STEP-2 three times at each station (except for the boat

example). Choose three different spots for each station.

4. Solve the trigonometry equations once you get back to SOH - CAH - TOA
Sine = Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse Cosine = Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse
our classroom. Tangent = Opposite ÷ Adjacent
Getting Ready . . . Practice Makes Perfect! Example 2

Example 1 Your BMFF (Best Math Friend

Forever!), who is standing 30
meters away from the base of
a tree, points the clinometer
at the tip-top of the treetop.
You find that the angle of
elevation is 28˚. If your BMFF’s
eye-height is 2m, then how
tall is the tree?
Answer: 212 ft
Answer: 17.95 m
