Personal INCA Survey Reflection for Intercultural Communication

Part 1

The Intercultural Competency Assessment (INCA) survey is utilized to evaluate an individual’s

cultural sensitivity and enable one to become aware of what their attitude is like in regards to cultural

diversity. There are six dimensions of cultural competence in which the INCA survey measures: Empathy,

Communicative awareness, Knowledge discovery, tolerance of ambiguity, respect for otherness and

behavioral flexibility. Each of these six dimensions encompass an individual’s behavior, motivation and

skills in each aspect and how they are applied. In example: Knowledge discovery indicates one has a

curiosity of other cultures and therefore tend to interact better having an open mind. They as well

exhibit behaviors in which they tend to pursue information about the cultures to learn more. These two

aspects help the individual to obtain the skill of ethnographic discovery that enables them to react to

intercultural situations better. I had taken the survey myself and one completed using the INCA survey

key, I have found that I have intercultural competencies in: communicative awareness, knowledge

discovery, respect for otherness and tolerance of ambiguity. I scored intermediate on behavioral

flexibility and empathy. I feel that in my past experiences as well as interest in other cultures helps to

play a role in scoring as I have and being strong in a number of the intercultural competencies.

In the past, I have worked in South Korea as an American, these two cultures are vastly different

in the workplace as well as culturally and social structures. Therefore, I had to experience a number of

intercultural communication scenarios. The aspects in which I often had to work on was: communicative

awareness, tolerance of ambiguity and respect for otherness. Before I left for South Korea, I had already

had a high interest in cultural anthropology and learning about other cultures and traditions. This had

already helped my knowledge discovery competency. I feel that once someone is put into the situation

themselves, it really tests their intercultural competencies. I thought I would score higher on empathy.
