What is It

The Contemporary Art Forms in Theater, Architecture, and Allied Arts

There are various contemporary arts and the practices of its artists in the country which started from
the 1970’s up to the present. This module discusses three of the many contemporary art forms such
as theater, Architecture and Allied Arts. The others will be discussed in the next modules.
Various influences led to further development of performing arts and literature. In fact, most art works,
are heavily influenced by the Americans and there are also art works that are influenced by the
Europeans. Filipinos who create and interpreted these art forms especially performing arts, become
well-known and even won trophies from international film festivals and award-giving bodies.

THEATER

valued and taken seriously. Plays can be performed in private buildings, and school
auditoriums.

Spanish influence: sarswela, drama), Theater with Anglo-American Influence

ARCHITECTURE
One of the effects of World War II in the country is the destruction of architectural sites especially in
the capital city of Manila. A time of rebuilding ensued. Philippine architecture uses the simple straight
lines of the International Modern Styles such as a chief mode of expression. In 1970, Philippine
architecture’s new form emerged which shows the artistic skills of Filipinos. The Filipino style found its
way in the re-emergence of traditional motifs. In fact, Bahay Kubo and the Bahay na bato became
popular forms to be copied and modernized as well as Batasang Pambansa and the National
Theater. By the 1980’s the country’s architectural design was swept by Post Modernism, a comeback
of some sort to classical architecture.

STRUCTURAL DEVICES OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Post and Lintel- a building system with horizontal elements are held up by strong vertical
elements with large spaces between them.
• Cantilever- a rigid structural element such as a beam, or a plate anchored at only one end to a
support from which it is protruding.
• Truss System- a structural component where force is applied to only two points.
• Arch- is a curved structure that spans a space and may or may not support weight above it.
• Dome- an architectural element that resembles the hollow upper part of a sphere.
• Shell structures- are lightweight constructions using shell elements
• Solar Panels- a photovoltaic module is a packaged, connect assembly of typically 6x10
photovoltaic solar panels.

FILM
Typically, a sequence of moving pictures or videos that is shown on television or cinema. Film making
industry in the Philippines started in the 1950’s but 1970’s was considered the remarkable era. During
this time, the academe started to produce a new set of film makers. Foreign audiences in
international film festival also started to show in terest in Filipino films.

ELEMENTS OF FILM
• Time- the most significant element of cinema. Three aspects of time are physical time,
psychological time and dramatic time.
• Space- this has three aspects namely scale, shooting angle, lighting
• Sound- refers to dialogue, background music, theme melodies and silence
• Techniques- such as cutting or editing, camera movement, framing

What is It

Contemporary Visual Arts in the Philippines

VISUAL ARTS in the Philippines

▪ A vast range of forms made by Filipinos. It started from visual art forms influenced by the
Western to works created by folk and indigenous people.
▪ Includes traditional art forms like painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as
advertising art, basketry, metal craft, mat weaving, pottery and textile weaving, which
need to be appreciated too.

SCULPTURE

▪ This has three dimensions- height, width, and depth.

▪ Created by either carving, modeling, or assembling parts together.

GENERAL KINDS OF SCULPTURE

Free-standing

▪ A type of sculpture that can independently stand in space

▪ has a flat horizontal base and all its sides completes the form of the
sculpture
Example: Guillermo Tolentino’s “Oblation”

Relief
▪ A type of sculpture that does not have a flat horizontal base
▪ The form is projected from a flat surface
Example: Martyrdom Tableau at Luneta Park in Manila

Traditionally, general kinds of sculpture are created by removing some parts of the material. Changes
during 60’s and 70’s happened. Artists explored different materials and methods which form new
types of sculpture in the contemporary setting. Some of these are the following:

Assemblage

▪ A type of sculpture which is formed by putting together materials like

found objects, pieces of paper, sponges, wood scraps, etc.
Example: “Man and Woman” by Lamberto Hechanova

Kinetic Sculpture

▪ Also known as a sculpture in motion because the whole or some parts of

the sculpture are moving with the wind or are vibrating with the surrounding
air.
▪ A mobile is said to be the simplest form of a kinetic sculpture
Example: Chandeliers made from kiping in Lucban, Quezon

Welded Sculptures
▪ Involves the process of putting together sheets of metal by using an
acetylene or electric torch.
Example: Sculptures of Eduardo Castrillo

Use of Glass
Example: Ramon Orlina and Imelda Pilapil –started the use of glass in
sculpture. Orlina made table pieces, murals and sculptures unified in a
framework while Pilapil used irregular and linear glass planes patterns.

Symbolic Sculpture
▪ Okir design by Abdulmari Imao, which is a Maranao
design tradition that is used in woodcarving.
