equally small and quiet steps forward.” (5)
“Maybe all the strings inside of him broke” (8)
Meaning
This quote foreshadows the two divergent planes
on which Q’s and MRS lives will go. Q will
become the shy one, who when confronted with
conflict will back down (take two steps back) and
MRS will become an in your face person (take
two steps forward). It is a great way to develop
the two characters through action, the simple
‘fight or flight’ response. With one simple passage
we know so much about Q and MRS.
Although the symbolism of strings will be
developed further, the phrase is about the fragility
of our existence. We are delicate creatures and
the strings breaking means that everything that
connected him, his live, his love, his sanity, his
physical being, etc. broke as well. The only thing
left would be darkness.

that maybe she loved mysteries so much that she
became one.” (8)
