1- Mention the global issue you will be discussing.

 This is the individual oral for English language and literature, the global issue I will be
tackling is unchecked ambition in the means of power. My 2 excerpts are lines 10/15 till
43 from the tragedy of Macbeth page 93 (50 on pdf) and a scene from the show naruto.
Firstly in naruto we can see sasuke’s unchecked ambition within his journey to get
revenge on his Brother, similarly unchecked ambition is displayed in Macbeth through
the need to kill banqou and his son after he became king to insure that banqou doesn’t
become a father of kings.

2- Introduce the literary work, the author, the body of work of

the author.
Macbeth a play by William Shakespeare shows a man that was fed ambition in
order to become king and this leads him down a dark path. William Shakespeare very
famous play writer and one of the most influential towards literature. He wrote Macbeth
emphasizing on the ambition that one gets due to greed towards power. Macbeth and
his wife both grew their ambition and greed however they ended up both dead.
Shakespeare wanted to tell people to avoid such path in order not to end up like
Macbeth.
3- narrow down to the literary excerpt and analyze the
literary excerpt: major claim(s) about the global issue,
linguistic /visual features used to prove these claims,
counterclaims.
Through the Macbeth excerpt we can see:
 Linguistic features
o Word choice: “unsafe” – “scorpions is my mind” – “terrible dreams” – “gain peace”
these show that Macbeth feels haunted by his actions, and knowing that baqou and his
sun are still alive they risk him not being king anymore, and he sees no other way than
committing more murder in order to stay in power his ambition to stay king increase
even more.
o Tone: due to the word choice Macbeth’s tone seems worried while Lady Macbeth’s tone
was reassuring to Macbeth while she tried to comfort him.
o Words/ phrases that fit time and space
 Claim: William Shakespeare is trying to show that one evil deed can lead to another and it is not
as Macbeth and lady Macbeth thought that simple deed of killing Duncan will grant all their
wishes. In other words having great ambitions is good however one should make sure to keep
away from evil, or have moral constraints.
 Counter claim: it is human nature to strive for a greater life, having the opportunity to do so
anyone would take it no matter how big ones ambition is. However due to Macbeth true
evil/darker nature he went on the wrong path. Banquo given similar opportunity did not follow
in macbeth’s path as his intentions were good.

4- Link to the non-literary work, the author, the body of work

of the author.
Unchecked ambition can also be evident in the naruto character by masashi kishimoto
“sasuke” specifically in ep 136 when he finally became ready to kill his brother. The author
wrote one of the three biggest manga in history, then it was transformed onto a show, he
wanted through his writings to deliver multiple life lessons one of which is conveyed through
sasuke. Throughout the show we can see sauske go down a dark path and in order to get
revenge on his brother who killed his whole clan, we can also see the main character try to save
him from this path but fail over and over again. Masashi kishimoto wanted to warn people from
such path and tell them no one can help you once you’ve crossed the line.
5- narrow down to the non-literary excerpt and analyze the
non-literary excerpt: major claim(s) about the global issue,
linguistic /visual features used to prove these claims,
counterclaims.
Analysis of scene: flashback:

o Shows sasuke hatred throughout the whole show, the hatred that has been built up
over the years.
o We can see how he full filled his ambition and worked hard in order to fight his brother.
o Even when he tells him he is not strong enough he answers that his hatred is enough
and then shows how powerful he has become.

Linguistic features:

 Inner monologues
 Word choice: (mere fantasy – vanish like a dream upon waking – how much you use
those eyes.

Visual features

o One of the main reasons people don’t understand anime are the scenes where
characters are standing still for a long period of time.
o Suspense of a long awaited fight and to see the result of a journey of becoming more
powerful

Message behind sasuke in naruto (a lot of messages in naruto but focusing on the one from
sasuke):
Claim: gaining power and to fulfill ambition (sasuke case is revenge) is not worth loosing friends
and people that care about you and you care about.

Counter claim: sasuke did lose his whole family/clan which lead him down a dark path where he
did not see any other way (tunnel visioned)

Evaluation:

The message is evident through the body of work however from the excerpt it only
shows the global issue.

6- Mention similarities and differences between both works.

 Both have a character that had their ambition lead a dark path
 Eerie mood
 Time and space is different hence the word choice and the way of delivery of the
message
 Kakashi is sauske’s banqou

7- Wrap up with an interesting thought.
