Chapter 2 External Analysis
Political
Political risks and geopolitics between key feeder markets or countries, on the other
hand, are causing major concerns about the Philippine gaming market's growth and stability.
We believe that the political risks mean political viability in passing casino gaming legislation,
and political instability, in which the political winds can shift drastically, affecting the IR's ability
to conduct business.
Another aspect that has become increasingly relevant when assessing a prospective
jurisdiction for today's large-scale international IRs is the main feeder markets and related
geopolitics. Global business will be impacted by geopolitical volatility, which will have a negative
impact on results. They believe that the competitive advantages of the Philippine gaming market
will continue to have a significant effect on its long-term outcome, allowing the industry to
continue to expand in a sustainable manner, capitalizing on the region's booming and
increasingly wealthy middle class and better stimulating tourism and related economic impacts
that benefit the nation.
Economic
The Innovation Group has been closely monitoring market conditions and trends, and it
has been involved in a variety of IR-related projects throughout the world. A study of the
inherent competitive advantages of the Philippine industry shows the following:
Gaming Tax Regulations
The gaming tax regime in the Philippines remains economically competitive in the Asia
Pacific region, as operators can devote more financial resources to customer acquisition and/or
capital upgrades, resulting in higher prospective revenues.
Labor and Workforce Costs
The country's local population is eager to work in most entertainment and hospitality
environments. Furthermore, since English is one of the official languages and the primary
medium of instruction in the country's education system, training and development sessions are
more successful. Meanwhile, the Philippines' labor costs remain among the most competitive in
ASEAN. Even for professionals and middle management, average base salaries in the
Philippines are among the lowest in the ASEAN region, resulting in favorable operating margins
and investment returns.
Infrastructure Improvement
With improved infrastructure, the country has the potential to be even more prosperous,
given its vast domestic market, appealing investment factors, and the tourism-driving beauty of
its natural environment. With the help of Official Development Assistance (ODA) from countries
such as Japan, Korea, and China, the Philippines is now ushering in the “Golden Age of
Infrastructure” by preparing 75 flagship projects worth US$160 billion. It intends to complete 32
of them by 2022, thereby enabling more development in a variety of industries, including
gaming. For example, the 106-kilometer Manila-Clark Railway Project, which aims to reduce
travel time between the two cities from more than two hours to just 50 minutes, is expected to
be a powerful catalyst in boosting tourism growth in the Clark Zone and benefiting Clark-based
casino properties. The project is scheduled to be finished in 2021.
Socio-cultural
Japanese hospitality and Filipino warmth are unquestionably in a league of their own in
the Foreign Service industry. Okada Manila is an exceptional oasis with a top-tier casino, luxury
hotel, world-class restaurants helmed by markedly renowned chefs, retail outlets, and premier
entertainment amenities, fusing the two cultures into an iconic integrated resort that overlooks
Manila Bay. Since its inception in 2017, Okada Manila has gone above and beyond in terms of
offering high-quality service, leisure, and entertainment by adhering to the forward-thinking
Japanese concept of omotenashi, which entails anticipating guests' current and future needs.
Okada Manila provides its guests with quick, smooth, and efficient transactions, assisted by a
highly trained staff, while mixing seamless comfort and lush functionality with its modern
facilities.
The resort's prime location in Entertainment City within the Manila Bay Freeport Zone
gives guests easy access to the country's beautiful islands, making it a popular destination for
tourists from Hong Kong, mainland China, South Korea, and Japan. Given the Philippines'
strong economy, Okada Manila is poised to extend its vision of being an iconic landmark in the
local integrated resort industry. The organization remains dedicated to its mission of providing
visitors with nothing less than an exceptional experience.
In addition, Gaming is just a subset of the larger hospitality and entertainment industry.
Looking at wider populations, even in historically risk-averse societies, there has been a natural
evolution away from gambling and casinos and toward a greater appreciation for travel and non-
gaming facilities. As a result, Gaming will continue to be an integral part of the entertainment
and hospitality industries in Asia; but, as consumer preferences shift, non-gaming offerings will
become more important in the long-term business model of integrated resorts. As a result,
operators will become increasingly critical in attracting families and leisure travelers, the majority
of whom will not choose a destination based on gaming choices. This pattern would be
bolstered further by the need for resorts to be socially and morally responsible in their
operations.
Technological
Scott has seen technology becoming an increasingly valuable tool as he has worked to
oversee Okada's rise from the ground up. “With the guest in mind, our implemented systems
begin the moment a guest drives into the property. The first thing they will notice is the car park
management system and parking guidance system, which will direct them where to park their
vehicle,” he explains. “As a guest moves through an interconnected resort, they are introduced
to a plethora of user interfaces and various systems that can be dealt with. Our portfolio is very
huge — a large integrated resort usually has more than 100 different systems.”
The resort, located near the stunning, recently renovated Manila Bay in the Philippines,
provides guests with an escape through its iconic gaming facilities, which include 500 table
games and 3,000 electronic gaming machines. Okada considers technology implementation to
be a top priority, and Scott emphasizes the importance of staying up to date with the latest
technologies. “We are very much based on today's technology – not yesterday's.” “As we move
toward virtualization, 90 percent of our business is currently virtualized, not only from a data
center standpoint, but also from a personal computer standpoint,” he says. “A company named
Paragon Digital Lifestyle created one of the most innovative user interfaces that we've
introduced. They have enabled us to introduce a user interface in the space, which has seen a
tablet in every hotel room. The tablet serves as the user's command center for controlling all
aspects of the environment, such as running the TV, browsing the internet, and opening and
closing the curtains. The tablet truly serves as a gateway for the guest to communicate with the
rest of the room.”
Scott recognizes the value of placing guests at the center of any decision Okada makes,
as he operates with a strong customer-centric approach. “We are really concentrated on how to
communicate with visitors in a better way than ever before. “We've expanded our language
capabilities so that our technology can be customized to each individual guest, regardless of the
language they speak,” he says. “It enables us to direct guests with clear language requirements
to the staff member who best meets their needs. For example, if we find a guest in a room that
speaks Mandarin, we will know that they speak Mandarin based on the preference selection
when they check into the room, which means that if a call comes in from the guest's room, it will
be immediately routed to the most suitable staff member to assist in the language that fits the
guest.”
Environmental
As part of its comprehensive effort to become a zero-waste business, Okada Manila, a
world-class luxury integrated resort in Entertainment City in Paranaque City, recently turned
over nearly half a ton of used plastic to recycling plants. On Monday, June 3, approximately 100
kilos of balloons and 100 kilos of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles were delivered to
warehouses in Bulacan and Malabon. These plastic wastes can be recycled and upcycled into
products like wall panels, compost, and even high-end armchairs. The armchairs will then be
given to a local public school for use by its students. Okada Manila has agreed to monthly
deliveries of at least 40 kilos of PET bottles for recycling. Apart from plastic waste, the
integrated resort will concentrate on more environmentally friendly food waste management,
which can be turned into biofuel. Employees at Okada Manila will attend a series of workshops
on the value of plastic waste reduction and marine protection in order to help the company
achieve zero waste status. A two-tower hotel, the world's largest multicolor dancing fountain,
and an iconic nightclub and indoor beach club which are all located at Okada Manila.
