Personal statement 3

As a newly qualified physiotherapist I would be privileged and excited to join George Eliot
Hospital NHS Trust. The overall vision of the Trust to take pride in providing the best
possible is innately important to me and current practice. I also I identify with the Trust’s
EXCEL Values such as Effective Open Communication and Excellence and Safety. These
are qualities and skills I possess, and why I would be an ideal candidate for such a stimulating
role in a welcoming teaching Trust of which I have had both placement and personal
experience within. I am a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and expected
to graduate with a 2.1 degree in November 2017. I am currently awaiting Health and Care
Professions registration.

I am a hardworking, confident and thoughtful individual and pride myself on being cheerful,
trustworthy and punctual in both my professional and personal life- skills in which I have
demonstrated whilst undertaking my placements at University. I have had varied placement
experience within: the community and intermediate care, virtual wards, intensive care units,
surgical wards, acute stroke rehabilitation, orthopaedics inpatients as well as neurological and
musculoskeletal outpatients. Across several placements I have effectively led and delivered a
variety of group activities, which have further sparked my passion, and which resulted in
extremely positive feedback from patients and staff. Experience working with young adults
who have life-limiting conditions through volunteering with a Warwickshire based scheme
called 'Sailability’ which required resilience, compassion and a great deal of enthusiasm has
been uniquely rewarding. I feel this range of experiences will prepare me well for this
rotational role.

Safe and effective clinical reasoning is something I believe to be imperative in the provision
of well managed high quality patient care. I have been able to effectively manage an
increasingly large caseload independently, during placements, utilising effective time
management and prioritisation of care needs. I have received successful feedback regarding
my management of complex and challenging clinical and non-clinical situations. I believe my
clinical reasoning abilities and patient centred approach to be excellent, and is reflected in
obtaining first class marks in my recent musculoskeletal outpatient exam and high
achievements throughout my academic life.

I am active in group tasks and have been nominated group representative; a position I have
maintained throughout my three years at Coventry University. The experience illustrated my
excellent communication and organisational skills, as I was able to reliably relay information
and proactively organise my peers. These particular desirable skills were again demonstrated
when I confidently and independently lead the organisation of the ‘Coventry University
Physiotherapy Ball 2016’. Taking on varied and extra responsibility is something I am
accustomed to and would be more than willing to work as part of the ‘on-call’ team and work
weekend rotas in concordance with the Agenda for change.

I was able to exhibit proficient computer skills whilst developing a clinical service
improvement at university. I suggested a creative idea based on improving the physical
activity levels of patients in an acute mental health ward, and delivered the idea in an
innovative and highly technical presentation which was praised from both staff and peers.
During this project, I worked autonomously in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team.
This reflects my ability to self govern my practice whilst leading and working effectively
alongside a team to achieve a shared outcome.
I am confident in my skills to evaluate and synthesise best quality evidence, and implement
findings to provide successful evidence based practice. This was also applied to a neurology
outpatient placement in which I independently improved practicalities and standardisation of
several outcome measures which increased uptake and reliability. My desirable analytical
skills are also supported by the completion of my dissertation, which discussed the practice of
‘Brief Physical Activity Advice’ amongst students in which I achieved a high 2.1 grade. I
competently use an ePortfolio to keep an electronic record of continuous professional
development, demonstrating my ability to reflect and apply my clinical knowledge. I would
also be interested in developing a journal club and other activities to improve professional
development and teamworking amongst peers, which I have previously been successful in
organising.

Physical activity advice and health promotion is an area in which I am particularly invested in
and regularly advocate the Department of Health’s ‘Making Every Contact Count’ initiative
to provide holistic and evidenced based care. I support a family company called ‘Exercise
Works!’ and have been lucky to travel to Israel assisting with organisation, communication
and delivery of a business plan to provide training on the delivery of physical activity
promotion to clinicians. I am always seeking opportunities to further my learning and develop
personally and professionally.

I lead a very active lifestyle which includes: weight training, running and cycling all of which
provide me with personal fulfilment and reiterates my innate passion for physical activity and
promoting a healthy lifestyle. Throughout my university life I have been involved in sports
groups. I am a member of Coventry University Athletic Club and recently competed in
Varsity 2016. I relish opportunities for interdepartmental and team building activities, and I
have participated in ‘Medics vs. Physiotherapists football’ whilst on placement-despite my
inability to play football! I believe it is important to maintain the equilibrium of work-life
balance, as it maximises a positive attitude towards practice.

I am extremely interested in the varied opportunities offered at your Trust, as I believe it will
enhance and fulfil my learning needs. My clinical placements have been highly varied,
maximising my potential to adapt to specialities across medical, respiratory, musculoskeletal
or neurological settings. Throughout placements, I have been involved in clinical audits, risk
assessments and I understand the importance of confidentiality and clinical governance as
shown by application of departmental policies and national guidelines. I have particular
interests in working in such areas as Paediatrics and Intensive Care, as I feel I would excel in
these areas which require tactful and varied communication, creative treatment plans, and a
highly motivational delivery of care in a diverse environment. I am also a flexible worker and
can work as and when required and can drive.

The perfect locality, shared Trust values, and rotational prospects across modern facilities
make your therapy team one I would be delighted to work for, and one I would quickly
integrate into, given the opportunity. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
